I've been replaying the Steam version of the 1999 Aliens vs. Predator game lately, which today is commonly referred to as Classic 2000. Is anyone still playing the online in some capacity?
>>12250635I remembered having a lot of fun with this and I also remember the campaigns being longer than they are. The Alien was my favorite to play and today I realize there's only 5 missions including 5 (in some cases ugly and unfinished) bonus missions, I should start looking for fanmade stuff.
There should have been a fifth-gen, Aliens survival horror game in the Resident Evil style, with prerendered backgrounds, cinematic camera angles, and bad voice acting. It's shocking that this game was not made. We'll never get it now.
I remember owning the Gold Edition of this for the PC back in 2001 or so. The one thing that is really noticeable about the Gold Edition is that Fox remade all of the live action cutscenes with different American actors, and replaced all of the original British cut-scenes. https://youtu.be/hfOi8airQFA?t=50
AVP1 is so superior to AVP2 that it's not even funny. I think the only reason plebs hype AVP2 is because of the cool box art and the fact that Monolith made it.
>>12250652I agree. I disliked the level design in AvP2 because it was of that type that gets the player lost, stuck, and worst of all, not fighting anything for long periods of time. That was probably to hide the small amount of single-player content. I think the AvP2 fanbase are mostly people who look back fondly on its multiplayer modes.
>>12250652Also it was their first one. I like both equally since AVP1 has so little going for it in terms of singleplayer gaming experiences.
>>12250659What instantly put me off on AVP2 is how slow the Alien is. I mean, it doesn't even make all that much sense for it to be so fast in AVP1, it's not like they're all that quick in the movies. But I just love the freedom of motion and the speed that the Alien gameplay has in AVP1, there's almost nothing like it. You move at mach speed and one-tap most enemies, and in return some enemies can one-tap you, so you have to exercise caution and actually play it as a stealth game. I can't really think of any other games that combined insane movement speed with stealth, but it works amazingly well.
>>12250635>Is anyone still playingyes>onlineew, no
>>12250686They that was awesome. Every other stealth game I can think of rewards slowness and punishes speed.
>>12250652The singleplayer campaigns totally blew AvP1 out of the water, don't be silly.
>>12251130This.The overall story is pretty good throughout the three species' campaigns.AVP2 has more atmosphere.
>>12250652>I think the only reason plebs hype AVP2 is because of the cool box art and the fact that Monolith made it.Nobody cared about monolith making it back when it released. We liked it because it had a great story that was faithful to the source material, was fairly well-designed and immersive, and at the time was a big graphical upgrade. Not saying it doesn’t have bugs and flaws, but it’s hardly a pleb game of 2001.>>12250659>I got lostSeriously? I remember some dead ends, but usually those contributed to the atmosphere or had some pda lore you could pick up. I don’t remember getting lost/confused except for one of the pod level zones.>>12251130>>12251135This.
>>12251130Nah. You felt a lot weaker in AVP2 and the movement was way clunkier than AVP1.
The real question is why is the AVP2 expansion so fucking shit
>>12250652AvP2 campaign and mod scene is so fucking much better than AvP1, delusional
>>12251391Movement feels like ass in AVP2. It's so much smoother and more fluid in AVP1.
>play AvP 1 as a kid when it came out>somehow get used to the gotta go fast alien, never really play it again until AvP Classic 2000>years later play Natural Selection>Skulk is the basic bitch alien, low damage but small and fast, usually players just kamikaze then pick other lifeforms once available>but it can also climb on walls>all my Alien experience kicks in, I go sanic fast, hide in vents, wait for marines to pass in their attack on our hive, then hit and run tactics, crawl on the floor, bite their ankles, circle around the room vertically, bite ankles again>marines just panic, disorganise in confusion as I hide back in vents to lick wounds>they rally and press on>then I attack again>bite and hide>confusion and panic reigns>do it again and again until they get wiped or I just bite everyone to death>mfw I absolutely dominate the server using basic Alien tactics from AvP>>12250652Apples and Oranges. Both games are good in their own way.
>>12251363>The real question is why is the AVP2 expansion so fucking shitI’ve always wondered this. AVP2 base game is pretty great and primal hunt totally fumbles all the goodwill. The story is kind of blah, and I think predaliens as a concept has never been as popular as whoever runs the franchise thinks it is. A better story would’ve been to play out the disastrous, failed first expedition to the planet that the base game story references—could’ve easily made three interlocking stories about that rather than some goofy artifact.
>>12251130The Marine campaign is the only good one. The Alien campaign is fun for the first 30 minutes where you play as a facehugger and then a chestburster, but it's a landslide downhill after that. The Predator campaign sucks fucking ass.
>>12251363>>12251369Is there a program you use to make these?
>>12251483>Natural SelectionYou just made me sad that Natural Selection 2 is dead now, officially.
>>12250652I have been playing both for decades and both have strengths and weaknesses.the lack of dedicated server and map rotation makes AvP1 significantly worse however.
>>12253991>marineNo question, it’s the best. Nails the atmosphere of Aliens perfectly.>alienI think it suffers from very wonky controls, and the story kind of fizzles out for me.>predator>sucks fucking assWhat? Explain. I always enjoyed the Predator campaign. It has flaws, but I always enjoyed feeling totally op with the cloak and plasma caster. Biggest gripe I can see with it is the first few levels where hunting humans from treetops would’ve been such an easy layup to hook people into the gameplay, but somehow they made it awkward. Idk if that’s a controls thing or has to do with the shitty trees and jumping mechanics.
