I really like how in the pre-internet world they used to make video game adaptations out of anything, since nobody really knew where the medium was headed, and since video games were really the only kind of digital diversion that existed accessibly they'd actually sell.

ITT post games that wouldn't get made today.
>>
Not quite the same thing but I think it kind of falls under this category.
Imagine if they made a Breaking Bad PS2 game or something.

Gilligan's Island on the NES always seemed like an extremely bizarre choice of something to make a game out of. It was already an irrelevant boomer show in the 80's so who exactly was the audience for this game?
>>
>>12250776
I didn't know this game existed, huh.
Same deal with Little Nemo the Dream Master, it was based on a property that was like 80 years old at the time. There was a movie adaptation that was made at the same time but as far as I know they don't have much connection.

It wasn't irrelevant; it was all over daytime TV.

The game was supposed to be released at about the same time as the anime movie in Japan. idk if it was

Yeah, the Little Nemo game was based on the movie, not the comic strip. The American marketing just got messed up because the movie didn't get released in burgerland until 1992.

>The game was supposed to be released at about the same time as the anime movie in Japan. idk if it was
It was released in Japan a year and a half after the movie came out, but that wasn't super rare at the time, when movies would stay relevant for years after their release.
>>
>>12250780
the movie bombed. there was also a nemo arcade machine that i believe was only released in japan and some spots in europe. you can play it on MAME and ive seen some flyers/marquee art however ive never been able to find even a picture of an actual cabinet.

I liked the Nemo arcade game. There's also an Willow Capcom game

T&C Wood & Water Rage isn't that odd. Surfing and Skateboarding were the current popular and hip things in culture in the mid 80's, it's what all the cool kids were doing. It's why Bart Simpson was given a skateboard in the early seasons. Riding on that popularity at the time was Town & Country Surf Designs, who were cashing in on the surfing and skateboarding trend. So for a videogame company to get the T&C license and make a videogame about skateboarding and surfing, that's pretty logical. Doubly so for being released in the late 80's.
Fester's Quest is much stranger, since it only exists because the lead dev wanted to make an Addams Family videogame and begged the creator's widow for the license. It wasn't hip, it wasn't popular at the time, it wasn't even getting played regularly on Nick at Night, it was just a result of one guy's obsession.
>>
>>12250745
I'm not sure how it actually worked. Like I know they made these games cheaply and parents would buy them for their kids who liked the movies. But with games being so much more expensive then, why?

Gilligan's Island was used as a daytime kid's show. I can see how someone would think it might make a profit. But these things were often just the idea of some old man with the license that he pushed to make. I've heard old developers tell exasperated stories about how some old bat wife of some guy got them to buy the rights to something because it made for example her brother some pissant money, like the Buck Rogers Gold Box CRPGs.

I have that on the Genesis. It was the only Gold Box game besides Pool of Radiance I think to ever get a console port. It was a nice game for the Sega which was kinda lacking in good rpgs

They made a game based on that shitty movie with Bob Hoskins but it was actually pretty fun

Jingle Cats is a series of novelty Christmas cover albums where the instruments and vocals of various popular songs are replaced by pitch bent cat noises. Sony turned it into a video game.
After every level you get a cutscene with a Jingle Cats cover. I really like their version of Billy Joel's "The Stranger:" https://youtu.be/VTcZciwLfeM?t=75

That's how it works on the PS2. The PS1 has a dedicated mouse peripheral that uses the normal controller port. I have a Tokimeki Memorial branded one with Shiori Fujisaki on it. (Picrel is not mine. Its an image I grabbed off Google.) They have normal, boring ones, too, obviously. A surprisingly large number of games support it. Wikipedia has a list, but there's probably even more than that.

Pretty much every console from the PC Engine to the start of consoles having USB ports (so the PS2) has some form of mouse peripheral. The most famous is the SNES mouse, but there's a PC Engine mouse, a Mega Drive mouse, a Saturn mouse, an N64 mouse (though its only supported by N64DD software), and a Dreamcast mouse. Collect them all, I guess.

At that time, video games were still viewed as toys, and toy companies were more involved.
Milton Bradley for example, published 4 NES games including Marble Madness, all of which were Rare developed.
>>
>>12250807
A lot of ancient TV shows were shown randomly in various daytime or weekend slots on independent TV channels. At the time, in most markets there were more TV stations than networks, in the 80s there were 3 national broadcast TV networks + PBS. Also there were some times when there wasn't any national network content (weekend afternoons when no major sports were going on for example) so the local affiliates also had time slots to fill.

Not to mention, cable was in its infancy, and a lot of basic cable channels also didn't have a full lineup of original programming. Networks like USA used to get the bulk of their programming from reruns.

So kids in the 80s would have been seeing a variety of programming from older generations mixed in with the typical syndication first cartoon series and the like.

I always thought fester's quest was an already designed game that had a license shoehorned onto it at the last minute, given that the gameplay is just Blaster Master without the vehicle levels.
>>
>>12251476
What is this game? Ghost Trick with cats?
>>
>>12252941
Nope, they just copy+pasted a lot of the engine code for Fester's Quest to lower development costs. It was always designed to be an Addam's Family game from day 1. Full story of it's development in an interview with the lead dev here:

It's a licensed game based on Jingle Cats, Christmas novelty albums where cat sounds are used to recreate popular songs.

The PS1 game itself tasks you with caretaking cats in a home, and building their relationships up so they like each other enough to perform one of those songs for you, with ten songs featured.

The game just recently had an English fan translation completed.

Its full title is Ai to Yuujou no Neko Monogatari - Jingle Cats - Love Para Daisakusen no Maki, or, as the fan translation calls it, A Cat's Tale of Love & Friendship - Jingle Cats - On a Mission of Love.

The best way I'd describe it is as a arcadey virtual pet game. Unlike most virtual pet games where you manage your pet(s) over a long span of time, Jingle Cats is broken into brief discrete levels between which the game state is reset. In every level, you pick two cats: a lead cat and a partner cat. Your goal is to raise the two cat's affection for each other (indicated by the bar at the top of the screen). You raise the cats' affection levels by getting them to play with each other. Once its maxed out, you can issue a "love attack," prompting the cats to confess their love for each other (or if they're the same gender, do a brotherly dance?), ending the level.

The cats have various stats which are affected by the tools in the hot bar. You have to keep them fed, clean, and happy. At the beginning of the game, you only have to manage the lead and partner cats. As you progress through the levels, the game gets more difficult by giving you anywhere from one to three additional cats to manage. These additional cats do not have an affection bar to raise, but they do have the other stats and can interact with the game world. The love attack will fail if any stat on any cat it too low, so you have to divide your attention across all of them.

Unfortunately, the levels don't have much variety other than the number of cats you must manage. The game gets repetitive quickly, though its only two-ish hours long so I don't find this to be a huge deal breaker. The game's biggest strength is its charming visual aesthetic. Every element has tons of animation. Its crayon and line boil style feels anachronistic on the Play Station library. Much like the albums its based on, the game is more of a novelty than a work with significant substance, but I enjoy it nonetheless.

thinking back to childhood,

there was a "Frankie Goes to Hollywood" game on 8bit home computers like the C64.

yes... a computer game for kids based on the 'relax don't do it when you wanna CUM' one hit wonders.

and there was a licensed "Platoon" run & gun on Spectrum. fucking PLATOON... an anti war war movie about stoned draftees accidentally murdering VCs and fragging their lieut.

thinking about it, it was OCEAN that came up with all these bizarre licensed titles

James Clavell's Shogun getting not one, but two games was pretty weird. One of them was a text adventure (sort of makes sense), the other a strange side-scrolling platformer (this is just fever dream shit).
