Mega Man 2 was huge for guys who grew up with the NES, they say it's the best one. Those who discovered Mega Man through emulators, Anniversary collection or Legacy Collection, what's your opinion on this game? Did it stand out as the best one for you?
>>
I like 1 more, just slightly. I think it's the music.
>>
>>12251823
"Mega Man 2 is the best" is one of those basic bitch gamer opinions that's also absolutely true. I played the shit out of this game as a very young child and it never really gets old for me. I love the levels, the weapons, the bosses and even the 8-bit bullshit. And the soundtrack...there's a reason the music has been referenced and covered a gazillion times.
>>
I like 2
4 is the best NES Mega Man though
>>
>>12251823
I like 1 and 3 more. There's too much requiring specific weapons toward the end of the game. Also, I remember being irritated by the tank boss after the boss rush. Maybe I'd like it more if I replayed it.

>Mega Man 2 was huge for guys who grew up with the NES, they say it's the best one.
I don't know if it's the best, but it's my favorite.
Might be partially because it's the most accessible. Flash Man and Metal Man were both easy stages (the latter even easier if you had the Flash weapon), and the original US version had reduced difficulty that meant the robot bosses died faster to the mega buster (might only apply in "Normal" mode I can't remember). Wood Man also has a fairly easy stage (again Flash can be a big help).
Music is also my favorite but nostalgia very likely plays a factor on that one.
Ultimately loved all the Mega Man games though, have great memories playing 2-5 with friends during snowy days off in the middle of winter.
>>
>>12251823
2/3 for me. The continuity of it, with the dark bosses in 3.
>>
>>12251823
It's way too easy on normal mode, way too hard on hard mode. Basically all it improved from MM1 was cementing the amount of bosses, the presentation, and that's about it. It's definitely one of the better of the original 6, but I don't find it that much better than 1 (which is still my fave).
>>
2 has the best routing of the NES titles, with 3 coming close. The only people who think otherwise are the types of milennials who are having a midlife crisis and picking up a bunch of old games and bulldozing through them in 2 hours or less to "catch up"

It's a mediocre famicom platformer and a piece of shit by rockman standards. The level design is bland, uninteresting and boring. The robot masters are only a slight improvement over the first game and the controls aren't as refined as in 3 onwards. Let's not even talk about the weapon balance. Bubble man's stage background burns my eyes. The game is hard carried by its music, cinematic moments like the dragon one and lives thanks to undeserved popularity among nostalgic old farts. It was the very first MM game I played and it made me shalve the series unit I tried 9(after playing X) like a few months, maybe a year later. I really liked it and thought that it did everything much better. It motivated me to emulate all other games from the main series and pretty much turned me into a die hard which made me even more critical of 2.
>>
I wouldn't call it the best one but it was the first one to be REALLY good
MM3 also kinda sucked which probably helped MM2's rep
Personally I think the best one is 7
>>
>>12251823
Is 5 good?
>>
>>12251823
I did play this game in an emulator and I wish I hadn't because it made me oblivious to the fact that you're supposed to use the time stopper in quickman's stage.
I thought you just had to be really fast so I used emulator savestates and did it that way like a moron
>>
>>12252692
Depends on what you're looking for
I like it, but it's also commonly criticized for having underwhelming boss weapons, especially considering how strong the charge shot is in that game in particular
>>12252693
The thing about Quick Man is he's also weak to the Time Stopper himself, and considering he's the hardest boss in the game you're probably better off saving it for him
>>
>>12252692
It’s better than 4 or 7. Not quite as good as 6. Nor is it as good as 2 or 3. At the end of the day though it’s a mega man game so it’s worth playing.
>>
Something I don't see people talk about much when it comes to why MM2 is usually looked at the most fondly is the absolutely chaotic weapon weakness cycle. MM1's is good because of how basic it is, being the first game and only having six robot masters each with very basic themes, the weapon weaknesses were easy to figure out and made a lot of sense and set the logic for the games. 4-6 are kind of annoying because by then the themes are so out there that a lot of the weaknesses don't make sense so it's just a guessing game and feels arbitrary, and there isn't much wiggle room since every boss just has his one weakness and that's the only unique thing to him. MM3 was ok because it had the two separate cycles and they weren't even both 4 robot masters, so that added a slight curve ball. But man, MM2. All over the place. You had weapons that decimated multiple robot masters, robot masters with multiple weaknesses, all kinds of invulnerabilities, a weapon that actually replenishes a robot master's health, a weapon that doesn't even ever do damage except to the one robot master who is weak to it. There's just so much to experiment with. And on top of all that it being an early game the robot masters still have fairly basic themes so when you guess the right weakness it actually makes sense and is fulfilling.

the only real choices is between 2 and 3. 1 doesnt count because it only has 6 bosses and has a retarded score counter on the screen that ruins the game. 3 doesnt work, is pure jank, horrifying flashing lights all over the way too busy screens, worse music than 2, overstays its welcome with slop padding. so yes 2 is the best
>>
>>12251823
I played it with rollchan along with 1 and 4. I found it somewhat frictionless compared to the others, was the easiest one for me by far, not necessarily a bad thing, and the final stretch was my favorite of the bunch. Working my way through X now.
>>
>>12251823
It was fine but personally I prefer 3
>>
>>12252693
When you git gud you can do quickman's stage without savestates. It's not actually that hard the is only like one spot that's a little tricky to not fuck up, once you know the way you're supposed to do it.
>>
>>12252747
Good points
>>
I've never played any Megaman games proper and the Legacy Collections are on sale, should I get them? PC or Switch? I'm thinking of getting only part 1 of the normal collection and X Legacy Collection (though part 2 of X has X5 with that one music track I like, you know the one)
>>
>>12252783
Switch for sure if you play it portable. They are fun games to play on the go

Switch and 3DS have unedited art removed in other versions due to Nintendo copright as well as amiibo functionality (if you hate amiibo, use TagMo). Could've sworn the Nintendo system cameos in Mega Man 7 were also unedited but I guess I remembered wrong. At any rate these aren't hardware-intensive games. Switch.
>>
i like 4 and 5 best but 2 is obv a classic i still love
>>
>>12252928
>>12253162
I think I'll only get LC1 on Switch since it's the cheapest, can play portably and won't feel much buyer's remorse in case Rockman isn't for me
>>
>>12253271
>Switch version costs twice as much as Steam version in my region
Fuck, and here I thought I had made up my mind
>>
To this day I still wish someone would mod MM3 to change the Doc Robots to the actual MM2 boss sprites, and throw in another set of revisited stages for the MM1 bosses. Magnet Man and Snake Man had really neat stages, it was a shame they didn't get revisited. Oh, and change the three clone Mega Men so they actually change to the weapon you chose and use it as well instead of just changing color so it's a proper callback to the clone Mega Man in MM1. With the Doc Robot bosses and the upgraded Yellow Devil, it really feels like they were working on making MM3 a conclusion to the trilogy with Dr. Wily throwing everything he's previously made at you, but it got cut off before they could finish it.
>>
I liked the first one more.

Still need to give 3 a proper try.

Freezing time makes it a cakewalk, but doing it legit lets you save ammo for the boss
>>
The music is great, except for Crash Man...which may be the point.
>>
>>12251823
2 was the most well-rounded game in the first Legacy Collection. There were parts I liked in the other games more, but usually there were so much more that just didn't land for me that by the time I do my first/second/third/whatever clear, I walk away thinking 2 was better.
I think every game in Legacy Collection 2 (except for the eighth one) are better than it, but 2 is still very good.
>>
X was the only Megaman game I ever played in the 90s and I didn't "get into" the series until the 2010s at least.
I like 3,4, and 6 better. But 2 is still a good game and is definitely in contention for best music. They really upped the presentation in later titles and 2 isn't exceptionally better in level design or anything to offset that. I also think the Wily stages are really annoying in 2 and is it just me or does it have more momentum than later games (not as much as 1 though)?
>>
>>12251823
As someone who marathoned all the Classic games a few years ago, MM2 is low tier. All it's flaws are self evident, the physics are still a bit off, the weapons are wildly unbalanced, several stages suck, as well as some robot masters, boobeam trap, etc.
>>
>>12252681
MegaMan 1 was a failure and sold like poop that Inafune had to beg Capcom to let them make this sequel.
>>
>>12251823
zoomer here

3 and 4 are "better" games but 2 has the best soundtrack and best roster

2 is also the easiest megaman game even on hard mode so its good for casual play
>>
>>12253894
The flaws of 1 are more on the programming side of things, slippery physics, glitches, wonky AI, but the game design itself is more solid than 2. More consistent level design, more balanced weapons.
>>
>>12251823
As someone who owned this game growing up it was indeed one of the games I played.
>>
>>12253939
5 and 8 are way easier than 2
>>
>>12253508
I don't know if this factoid has become "smb2 wasn't originally a mario game" tier in this place but just in case you didn't know, all the Mega Man 2 music was originally made cutesy sounding and they told the composer to redo them to sound cooler, and Crash Man's was the only one that remained unchanged. That's why it sounds so out of place in the soundtrack.
>>
>>12254045
I did not know this. It is very out of place, just assumed he was crashin' the party.
>>
Man I really wonder about /vr/ sometimes. 4 is better than 2? 8? 7??? Lmao

>>12253980
6 is also really easy as the Rush Adapters kinda break the game open and allow you to pick up a bunch of extra lives and E tanks.
>>
>>12253980
Jump Jump Slide Slide is too much for casuals.

4 is the best because it's the perfect middle ground of the series and it's a well rounded game that doesn't any "that part" bullshit. For instance MM2 has boobeam part which is simply not fun even if you know what you're doing, MM3 has the entire Wily Fortress which is a major letdown and some of the DocBots are awful etc

In MM4 the charge shot is perfectly balanced in that it's not overpowered, there are lot's of cases where you're better off using the regular buster over a charge, and it doesn't negate weapons. All the weapons are worth using and enemies aren't full of the "I'm invicible to most weapons except 1 or 2!" bullshit MM2 has.

MM4 is just the most pleasant to go through from start to finish. Admitedly MM3 has the best set of 8 initial robot master stages, but it gets rough after that and some of the weapons are really shitty.

My only issue with MM4 is that there aren't enough bullet based enemies. I was thinking of making a Protoman romhack of 4 but then when I realized just how few bullet based enemies I thought it wouldn't be worth it because the shield reflect ability would barely get any use.
>>
>>12254959
The routing in 4 is the most boring of all the nes games, it's the worst one by a lot lol
>>
>>12254959
>MM3 has the best set of 8 initial robot master stages
Do people actually like Gemini Man? That stage is a fucking slog
>>
>>12251823
it's not the best but it was my first, and it's a great one to play first at least. there's a lot that sticks out aesthetically speaking and unlike in later games there's some parts that are notably intended as harder, which while not exactly good design in a game where you can pick any level, makes for a pretty memorable experience in overcoming or even completely bypassing those challenges.

nowadays objectively i'd rank it on the lower end, but back in the day when most people seemingly only played the first three for whatever reason i can see why people considered it the best. personally though, 9 and 11 are my favorites. or for retro, &bass and 4.
>>
>>12254963
I'll tell you why 4 is bad as soon as this boss health bar finishes filling up
>>
>>12254959
> that doesn't any "that part" bullshit.
For people who actually played these games at the time, this kind of late-game issue had virtually no affect the overall opinion of the game. If you played Mega Man 2 enough to reach boobeam more than once in your life, you probably loved the game already and had played through the robot bosses and earlier wily stages many times. And if you thought boobeam was bullshit, you still just made sure to get there with extra lives and were still able to make it to Wily and beat the game.
>>
>>12255435
>there's some parts that are notably intended as harder, which while not exactly good design in a game where you can pick any level
Application of this kind of logic is how games lost their soul.
>>
>>12254971
I like anytime I can use Rush. MM3 is great, but the weapon select menu really sucks.
