Currently trying to get into JRPGs, but I'm not sure what to play and what not to play, what's good and what's not. Recommend me some shit or bitch about my choices or just say whatever's on your mind, the thread is about JRPGs and not just about meOnes I'm currently playing:>Etrian Odyssey HDAutistic as hell, grindy as fuck in the early game, playing it on "Expert" (original DS difficulty) because I'm not a pussy, but it gets better once you've gotten a few floors in.>Xenosaga Episode IThis is exactly the game I want to play. Story-heavy, not garbage, interesting-but-not-too-autistic mechanics, everything looks and feels pretty cool. Anything else like this, especially but not necessarily cyberpunk/mecha/sci-fi?>Dark Sun: Shattered LandsNot a JRPG, but I'm pretty blown away by how good it is, and I'm not making an entire thread just to say that so mentioning it here.Ones I've actually finished:>FF1Played it high on crystal meth when I was homeless a few years back and fought every single random encounter in the entire game. 4/10 by modern standards.>Pokemon (all of them)I'm a fan.Ones I've played part of:>Unlimited SagaMy first non-Pokemon JRPG as a kid. Loved the design and really wanted to enjoy it, but couldn't figure it out for the life of me. Apparently nobody else could, either. Will have another go at it for sure.>Megami Tensei (SNES english patch)I loved every part of this, but only got slightly past the first boss before losing my save and never picking it back up. Will finish eventually at some point.>FFVIIThis game was dumb. I don't know if I'm going to pick it back up.>FFXThis game was cool. Probably pick it back up at some point.>SMT Devil SummonerI liked this. Grindy and autistic, but I'll probably go back to it.>Mother 1Got through maybe 2/3 of it and then lost my save. Pretty good.>Mother 2/EarthboundDidn't play nearly as much of this as Mother 1, but liked it better. Got to the third town or something. I'll play these.
>>12251883Xenosaga has a lot of "secret sequels" in the form of Namco X Capcom and the many other RPGs interconnected with it.I'm playing through one of them (Endless Frontier) right now and I'm absolutely loving it. The gameplay is great and challenging and the characters are so fucking fun and cool and awesome. So if you end up liking Xenosaga you should definitely consider trying those after.
>>12251883>Story-heavy, not garbage, interesting-but-not-too-autistic mechanics, everything looks and feels pretty cool. Anything else like this, especially but not necessarily cyberpunk/mecha/sci-fi?FF7>FFVII>This game was dumb.Offering recommendations to the completely nonsensical whims of the posters on this board is impossible. I hope scientists will one day study the brains of the "good game bad" humans and see where the cancer cells metastasized.
>>12251883bro, you have shit taste. therein lies the problem.
>>12251904I'll look into it when I finish the OG trilogy.>>12251945I didn't get that far into it, and I probably will finish it just because it's one of those games you're expected to have played whether or not it's good, but my problems after getting like 1-2 hours in were:>low-res RE backgrounds look like garbage on modern displays, and filters don't help much>characters are stereotypical Knuckles/Vegeta "nothign personnel kid" edgelord who apparently undergoes character development, token cute girl with no personality, literally Mr. T, various background characters so boring they might as well have "BACKGROUND CHARACTER" nailed to their head on a neon sign>dialogue is $&#@*%& retarded>they literally just shamelessly made a 3D model of SSJ1 Gohan from the Cell Saga and stuck him in as the main character without even bothering to change the shape/color of his hair or gi>let's protest against an environmentally unfriendly megacorporation in a generic fantasy dystopia, how originalMy guess is that ultimately I'm going to finish it decide that game was a 5/10 or a 6/10 at best. I can't imagine getting through it and finding out it was indeed the best game of the entire 90s and worthy of all the praise hipsters and /vr/ put upon it. It's less about it being the worst game I've ever played and more about how it's not the best thing I've ever played in my life and faggots on the internet think it's way better than it probably is.But I probably will finish it, yeah.If there's anything other than FF7 that description makes you want to recommend, please do; I just think FF7 fans>>12251962What, you thought FF1 deserves an 8/10 and FF7 is the best game in the history of the world like half of the /r/hipsters on this board? And you wanna be contrarian and tell me that FFX wasn't at least a little bit cool and that Earthbound is "for Radditors" even though it's actually a pretty neat game? Final Fantasy simps are the ones with no taste desu.
>>12251980>ran out of spaceI just think FF7 fans are either trend-hopping zoomers who wouldn't know a good game if it raped them in the face or else millenials who grew up with it and look at it through rose-colored glasses.I'm sure FF1 was pretty revolutionary in its time, too, but I thought it was mediocre at best playing it around 2016-2017 (still played it).
>>12251883Ok here's what I'll recommend>Chrono TriggerVery short game, simple gameplay but a great story>Shin Megami Tensei 4Longer and tougher than Chrono Trigger but not as long as other RPGs. Has multiple endings so it's very repayable and the fusion system is addictive once you learn how it works. >XenogearsExtremely long (70/80 hours) and honestly more of a sci-fi novel or mecha anime in JRPG form but it is a great experience. Recommend playing with the 2.0 patch that fixes the text speed but I played it without.
>Played it high on crystal meth when I was homeless a few years backwtf
>>12251980 >>12251983 character limit opinion on a game you played 2% of. You made your decision on the quality and the fans of the game before playing it. Its a game you should like but unfortunately your internet history turned you off it. If you want a recommendation I would suggest just looking up a top 100 jrpg list and just blindly trying the first game you never heard of as to not taint your experience.
I think you should try more SMT. Especially Nocturne, Strange Journey, and Digital Devil Saga.
>>12251883Bro just casually admits to being a homeless meth addict while talking about old RPGs. How'd you dig yourself outta that shit?
>>12251883What games do you recommend to play while high on meth?
>>12252039I did play like 15 minutes of Chrono Trigger one time. I'll finish that. I'm going to play the other SMT games first.>>12252053I went in expecting the god-tier masterpiece everyone primed me for, the holy grail of RPGs, the epitome of all games, and I got the game I would've written when I was 12.>just looking up a top 100 jrpg list and just blindly trying the first game you never heard ofGood idea. I'll probably try this.>>12252101I stopped buying it? It wasn't that hard or anything. You don't really get withdrawals from meth; I was sleepy for a week and felt like shit for lack of dopamine for a couple of months while my receptors upregulated. I'm not recommending it or anything, but I don't necessarily regret it; meth is fun. It was just causing more problems than it was solving. But it's not "hard to dig yourself out of"; you're thinking of heroin. Some people can use meth responsibly. I didn't, so I stopped. Simple as that. But I had fun.>>12252320Porn games. I mean, anything will do, but porn games will rock your world.>>12252062Yes. I did also play like half of Persona 1, and I have all of the Persona games in some form or another. They look cool.
