Turns out, ten years after the Retrobright fad from a decade ago, has only accelerated the yellowing of plastics and made them even more brittle than just leaving them alone. What more is there to really add?

I treated one Famicom many years ago and it has long since re-yellowed. I have another untreated Fami which is still rather white. It's really luck of the draw. With a lot of this stuff I don't see the problem in giving it the sun and/or peroxide treatment, but it's probably a crapshoot as to if/when it will get yellow again.
If you are really bothered by yellowing, you're better off seeking out consoles which are still their original color and therefore don't have a propensity to yellow. My 1-chip Super Famicom hasn't yellowed at all, despite never having treated it or stored it in any special way

I thought it was already well-known that retrobrite made plastic more brittle over time. I remember the 8-bit guy or somebody saying something about it years ago.
Regardless, the only really yellowed thing I have is the network adapter on my Dreamcast. For some reason, the rest of the system is perfect, but the adapter is yellow as fuck.
>>
Never seen the point of using it.
The yellowing is perfectly normal and no one cares.

It's just a guy who had a thing in a closet, it's not science despite the sensational reporting recently

Anyone who didn't sleep through chemistry in elementary would have told you that it's pants on head retarded. Furthermore, it goes entirely against the whole idea of keeping old stuff. Imagine if someone went and polished the patina off ancient metal vases because UHHH IT MUST LOOK NEW AND SHINY

Why don't you just paint it?
>>
>>12252710
Now to be fair and autistic they kinda got the greys wrong it's got too much of a bluish hue and glossy. But not that bad of an example.
>>
>>12252710
Don't encourage it. 99.9% of painted consoles would end up as fodder for gore threads.
>>
>>12252719
Yeah but yellow and chipped is better right?

I left my PS2 and XBOXs in a drawer for 10 years and now my PS2 works and my XBOX doesn't!!

>A 10 year study shows that PS2s are more durable than XBOXes!!! CLICK FOR MORE DETAILS WE NEED YOUR COOKIES AND AD REVENUE

There's nothing wrong with that. It's nice to know that old electronics were enjoyed in the past and have a story, rather than just sitting in a box for 40 years waiting for some scalper to flip it on Ebay.

>>12252727
Bad example, given there'd be a 99% chance the Xbox's clock capacitor had leaked and destroyed the motherboard in such a scenario. PS2s don't just destroy themselves sitting unused in a drawer. An unserviced Xbox will.
>>
>>12252710
What paint was used?
>>
>>12252748
My friend gave me his old Xbox ~10 years ago. I never used it because there are no interesting games on that system, but it'd be a shame if the console was to self-destruct.
Can I simply remove it or do I have to replace it?
I didn't know the Xbox had an internal clock. Never understood the point of that stupid feature on the Saturn.

Literally all the clock capacitor does is allow the console to remember the time for ~3 hours after it's turned off at the wall. It serves no other function and the console will work just fine without it, UNLESS you have a really late revision motherboard, where Microsoft made the annoying decision to prevent the console from booting without it. For the vast majority of systems you can simply wiggle it back and forth until the legs snap off and you're done, but for those late production models you'll need to get out the soldering iron and replace it. Though if you're not planning to play the system anyway, opening it up and removing the capacitor will at least prevent it doing any damage. Someone can always do the soldering work later.

Thanks, anon. I'm used to repairing pinball boards so it should be easy enough.
If you're interested, I could post the picture here, but honestly I'm afraid it already leaked.
>>
>>12252834
Do. Even if it has leaked, it may not have eaten away anything important yet and be fine after a clean.

Also check your Xbox's version before you remove it. While all it did was keep track of the time for a few hours when the console was unplugged in most versions, in the 1.6 version of the console it was actually necessary for the console to function and would need to be replaced, not just removed. Though it was also far less prone to leakage in those versions.

why don't you retards have a market for repro shells?

are people only realizing it now? i've been calling it retrobrittle for years

retrobright
more like retroblight
>>
>>12252582
I only use it for things I want to sell to make them look better to potential buyers lol. I just use hair bleach, not the meme brand product.
>>
>>12252582
>turns out ten year old believe everything the youtube tells them
>>
>>12252748
I think your autism is making you miss the point. there was nothing scientific about that re-yellowed dreamcast video, yet every retro content farm called it a "10 year study". that's the point of contention here
yes putting hair salon cream on your plastic collectable when you don't understand basic chemistry is dumb
but one anecdotal and sensationalist story shouldn't be held as scientific consensus.
I just wish people took this stuff more seriously because it would benefit way more than baby game hoarding nerds, everything is plastic yet we don't even know for certain what causes degradation and how. Spoilers it's not fire retardants as most midwits parrot
>>
Anyone who wasted time and energy worrying about their Nintendo turning yellow was already completely lost.
>>
>>12252603
Yep, I remember people talking about how putting plastic in hydrogen peroxide and letting sit in the sun just leeched out part of the plastic and made it brittle and weak. It's just now that people like e-celebs and OP have caught on to what everyone was saying, they weren't paying attention because they were wow'd by the plastic getting lighter.
>>
>>12252582
Who could have predicted that drenching a plastic game console in bleach could possibly damage it?
>>
>>12252582
>abrasive
>wears things down and makes them more brittle
wow
>>
>>12252582
Saw Shelby's video the other day. To be fair, I haven't seen much retrobrighting on the channels I tend to watch in the last few years
>>
how deep does yellowing go into the plastic
>>
>>12252603
8-Bit Guy said that and he changed to another simple product that doesn't fuck with plastic, mainly because old plastic had variable levels of shoddy quality.
>>
>>12253081
far enough in that you aren't going to buff it out
>>
>>12253081
that specific kind of plastic is destined to become yellow. that's just how it is
>>
>>12253081
It doesn't because abs is non porous and air doesn't get into the plastic
>>
I have to admit the arrogant boomer science on this topic does frustrate me even if it's bait. The idea that you can know all about something without doing anything.
>>
>>12252603
I have one yellow DC and one that's remained normal, all the controllers are fine, they've both been stored next to each other in exactly the same conditions for the past couple of decades, it's a mystery.
>>
>>12252582
Use 5% hydrogen peroxide that's 50% hydrogen peroxide/50% water mix. It's more gentle, and doesn't leave the plastic damaged to where it'll quickly re-yellow or become weak and brittle.
>>
>>12253210
>and he changed to another simple product that doesn't fuck with plastic
Why would you use a product on plastic if you know it doesn't fuck with it?
>>
>>12253081
Same as british teeth. Bout 3.50 bongs.
>>
I'll say if you have something truly rare, like higher end dev hardware, limited production systems, or prototype systems or something like that, I think any sort of whitening procedure should be avoided, whether or not it is harmless in the long run
>>
>>12253469
>50% hydrogen peroxide
Sounds like a typo because that's really concentrated, getting close to rocket fuel and could cause a fire easily.

The lesson to learn here is stop trying to preserve electronics, just figure out how to digitize everything and quit wasting your time and energy.
>>
>>12252603
I also remember this. Which means OP is a true blue faggot, not surprising.
>>
>>12252659
Your pic still gets me. The narcissist who thought they had the skill to do this, should be poked with a hot poker repeatedly in the eyes for eternity.
