Is it true that to actually enjoy the Super Mario 64 controls, you NEED to use the original Nintendo 64 gamepad?

Or can you have the same level of precision with third-party controllers?
>>
I don't recall the game even having a d-pad option

i have hundreds of hours in this and various romhacks using a playstation 4 controller. you can use anything. just need to find comfortable bindings for it.
the real barrier to enjoying the controls is the learning curve. when to neutral or hold back on the stick, timing rollouts/wallkicks, and all the things you can do with kicks

Some people say that the notches are really important, specialy for diagonal running and jumping and what not

i find the gated sticks on the n64 and gamecube controllers to be really helpful.
i played the mario 64 PC port with a 360 controller and it was a lot tougher to play

>you NEED to use the original Nintendo 64 gamepad?
unless the game requires a special controller (guitar hero, lightguns, steel battalion, etc) anyone telling you this is a faggot.

use the most comfortable controller for your hands that contains all the inputs you need to match the game's requirements. if it can be played on n64, you need
>a stick
>7 face buttons, start, A, B, C-direction buttons
>3 "triggers" (L, R, and Z)
>a d-pad
at minimum, and comfortably

Funny thing you can play GH 1, 2, and rock the 80's with a ps2 controller natively, no rebinding required! Kinda plays like shit though....

If you've never played on real hardware, then the only thing you may have trouble understanding is how the deadzone settings should feel. Otherwise, it all comes down to practice.
>>
No, I finished it on my keyboard.

It's more a matter of how the analogue controls were calibrated.
The N64 control stick has a huge pivot, one of the largest for any stick operated using just your thumb (as compared to joysticks or arcade sticks).
As a result, your thumb needs to travel farther to affect more influence, compared to modern control sticks where it can be difficult to try and make the smallest movements.

SM64 has a lot of moments where the player is expected to move carefully and slowly, particularly on the tiny side of Tiny-Huge Island. These are much harder on modern controllers.

Bro, people have been emulating this game for decades with whatever bumfuck controller they like and still enjoy the game.
>>
>>12252610
No. I enjoyed it as a kid with a Wii Classic Controler Pro just fine.

>>12252610
nah, i played it on a ps3 controller once and i had fun

Anon, those are just resellers gaslighting you into buying their used slop on Ebay.

Plays perfectly fine on PS2.

Have you ever tried it with an arcade stick? I could see it almost feeling like IIDX minus the scratch, now I kinda want to try it out. Could be kinda neat on something like a hitbox if it works well.

if you want octagonal gated sticks wii nunchuk or classic controller would be another option. I never really had issues playing 64 with an xbox controller but I really felt the difference in sunshine

its cope from tendies trying to force the Nintendo Magic meme. any controller with a stick you like for other games will work. that being said the original controller does feel great for this game despite it being kinda retarded for general gaming use. honestly it felt like the n64 as a whole was designed around this game alone
