I think score is all that matters in games. If you don't care about score you're just going from point A to point B and nothing you do in between means anything.

Scoring in games tends to be an afterthought a lot of the time, even by the developers, though.
Example: In mario world you can max out your score easily by just hopping on wigglers a bunch in Forest of Illusion.
Playing the Sonic games to get a high score can be fun though.

I can't imagine playing Pokemon Snap and not caring about score, but I couldn't care less about score in Mega Man.
