Which classic Pokemon games are worth playing, anons?
I missed out on the games as a kid, despite really liking the show.

RBY, Stadium 1 and 2, and Emerald
>>
Divorced from the original context of the game: the ability to play a relatively complex RPG on a handheld, the games aren't much to write home about. They are designed to be beaten by 5 year olds.
>>
go back to your containment board

The strength of the games is the community aspect they have and how they incentivize you progressing through the games while trading and battling with your friends. You wont get that now but its still worth playing red or blue so you are aware of the cultural significance. gold or silver are also worth playing because they are direct sequels to red and blue. After that the only game that is worth playing at all is Emerald because it has a robust endgame and thats pretty fun. Avoid romhacks you will be recommended a lot of them.

you're bad at this

Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2 (N64)
Pokemon Snap (N64 version)
PokeMMO is cool too if you like the original pokemon gameboy games, it's basically a free online mmo version of those games.
>>

I have fun with the games up through Gen 3. Couldn't get into the later ones, and I tried.
>>

>PokeMMO
I like it a lot too but ehhhhh...
>>
Play Red or Blue first. Or Yellow. Yellow is good, but I feel like not having a selectable starter robs you of the true experience.
>>
>>12254306
It depends
Most of the fun was the fact you had no idea what the fuck you were doing and relied on friends to help.
Most of these games are now 'solved' as in 'pick this pokemon and just beat trhe game'
I never had the consoles for nintendo but for portable I'd honestly just say skip to fire red on GBA then play Heart Gold on NDS and call it a day

Pokemon Green/Red/Blue/Yellow are pretty much utter shit and were even for their time. The big thing was really 'wow I can be just like the anime'. Gold/Silver/Crystal is a lot better but still hits the 'just pick a geodude 20 minutes in and sweep 90% of the battles'
>>
>>12254306
Whatever you do, don't take advice or try to use "meta" mon. Half the fun is using pokemon you enjoy the design of
>>
Pokémon Pinball
Pokémon TCG (GB)
Pokémon Red or Blue
>>

>I missed out on the games as a kid
No you didn't. You have over half a decade before you turn 18. Spend a bit of it playing your grandfathers games.
>>
>>12254306
Unless you're underage, there aren't any.
You won't find any engaging gameplay or interesting writing. You might as well be watching a cartoon, the game almost plays itself.

You'd be far better off playing just about any other RPG. Even if you're into the monster collecting aspect, there's better options like DemiKids or Persona (1 or 2, don't bother with 3 or 4) or even Dragon Quest Monsters.
Unless you're already indoctrinated into the ecosystem, just don't bother, there's nothing for you.

Blue was fun, I was 8. You should play Gen 1 before anything else so you can appreciate the quality of life changes Gen 2 brings (in-battle exp meter needs to be in more games)

Full Pocket Monsters experience: a /vr/ guide
>know absolutely nothing about the franchise and first engage with it through newspapers articles about a cartoon show that caused epileptic attacks on children in Japan
>read video game magazine articles that talk about a social phenomenon in Japan, called "Pocket Monsters", see some small screenshots and design imagen and think it looks weird and foreign but cool
>Call up various local game stores and ask them if they sell this japanese Pocket Monsters Game, only for them to have no idea
>forget about it for a while and one day you casually watch the first episode of "Pokémon" on cable TV and then you keep watching all the first season, meanwhile:
>Get Red or Blue and play on a Game Boy, or a Super Game Boy. Better alternative: GB tower on Pokémon Stadium, and using Oak's Lab for item and pkmn management, much better than the menues on the GB games. But, for a first playthrough it's not mandatory.
>Once you beat the game and catch Mewtwo, watch Mewtwo Strikes Back kino
>Read the "electric tale of Pikachu" manga
>Get a friend or a way to get the Pokémon from the other version that you're missing. Play Stadium's gym leader castle to get starters, fossils, eeveees and hitmons.
>Also try to beat the different cups in the main Stadium game as a post-game challenge. Start training low level Pokémon and buff them/give TMs and customize them.
>Buy at least a pack of the TCG, even if you don't care playing it, it's good art on them.
>play Pokémon Pinball and the Game Boy TCGs if you want somen extra gen 1 experience on GB
>play Snap and Smash 64
>Start reading rumours about pikablu
>Get hype for "Pokémon 2"
>Download a japanese ROM of Pokémon Gold and play a bit of it on a poorly coded emulator
>Play the actual Gold or Silver cart on a GB Color or go full pokemaster and play on Stadium 2 using the GB Tower, then play the Stadium cups.

i feel the games have aged horribly and the franchise has failed to make the jump to 3d and completely stagnated since. the 3ds games were okay but the switch titles are fucking ass and they clearly dont want to do anything better with the franchise

the only interesting thing happening in pokemon anymore is the ROM hack scene.
>>
i think if i was gonna play pokemon now id probably play a crystal rom hack ported to one of the GBA titles
>>
Crystal, Fire Red and Emerald.
>>
Playing JRPGs as an adult is a bit depressing for me but i make an exception for Pokemon im completely obsessed with the series and for those who say the games are easy building the best possible team is what motivates you playing Pokemon games have a lot of replayability and you can even play with others to see if you are truly skilled
>>
>>12254849
>you can even play with others
stop hanging around playgrounds, you're an adult man
>>
>>12254849
Holy shit yes. A lot of the fun is creating new team every time you play
>>
>>12254572
>Get a friend
Where do i buy one of these?
>>
>>12254306
the main games and snap
>>
>>12254306
Honestly they're all worth at least trying up until heart gold. Including spin offs.
>>
>>12254306
All of them, people will performatively hate the ones that came out after they felt they aged out of the series but as someone who got into it as an adult all of them before the Switch are good.
>>
>>12254879
yet you use the same guys every time and refuse to use anything else
>>
>>12255201
>Where do i buy one of these?
Right here.
>Pay 1 (You) to a schizo who blogs here
>Receive a friend
>Receive as many bonus friends as the schizo has voices in its head
