I first beat this game in the ps2 anniversary collection. I had heard the pause trick was fixed, which I don't know if it's true or not but made me not even try it.

I did. It took me a lot of tries, including redoing the stage after getting game overs. I think it took me the most since I beat the game under 3 and a half hours.

It's tough but it's always the same attack pattern so it's extremely doable. Pulling off the jumps to dodge his movements is really satisfying.

I've done it. The fight sucks both cheating and legit, but for different reasons.

I'm not sure if you know, but in the original NES game the Start button brought up the item menu and Select was a simple Pause. Certain weapons like the Cut blade and Elec beam (which can hurt the Yellow Devil) can be paused and unpaused quickly and each frame movement will register as a new hit. It's similar to the cheat in Blaster Master where you could pause a grenade hitting a boss and the boss would still take explosion damage while paused.
