Who killed the Sega Saturn and why?
Being called Sega Saturn, or SS for short, customers often confused it with the Sega System, likewise SS. This hindered sales in the US of A.
Sega Lord X did. He tried to save it though.
I find it very unlikely that someone making a Saturn thread on /vr/ doesn't already know the history of its fall.

Despite the fact it was Sega of America that really made the Genesis so successful in the US, they declined any input from SOA and made a console that was reasonably successful in Japan then failed everywhere else. To their defense and not-defense, the Saturn was unsalvageable from the beginning from a sales perspective, but that was due to a chain of subsequent failures by SOJ many emanating from the fact they didn't understand the console market and relied too heavily on the arcade division.

In 1996, on leave from my deployment in Okinawa, I walked into SoJ HQ in Shinagawa and naively asked to speak to Mr Sega. I was soon corrected on my misapprehension, but after waiting for a while I was ushered into the office of a senior exec who I later knew on our drinking binges as "Naka-kun". Not sure of his actual name or position. He seemed to take my opinions and advice seriously, particularly when I assured him that Nights was a kick-ass mascot and Sonic was no longer cool in the good ol' US of A and didn't need his own games anymore. I also advised that I wanted more lightgun games. Anyway, I doubt I had much of an impact but that was my sincere attempt to save the Saturn.
Sega killed the Saturn to make way for the Dreamcast.This is what people fail to comprehend these days with their generation number nonsense look at video games. People pit the Saturn against the PSX and the Dreamcast against 6th consoles. This is not what happened. The DC was already dead by the time the NGC and Xbox came out and it was only alive for a couple months afer the PS2 came out. Both the Saturn and Dreamcast main competition was the PSX, there is a reason why Sony went absolutely mad at BleemCast, because it was the direct competition, to compare it to something zoomers understand it was like being able to play Halo on PS2. Should've shot down the Saturn idea entirely and put Dreamcast on hold. Put all their arcade games on Sony effectively killing off Nintendo while pushing back against Namco's cheap copies like Tekken with Virtua Fighter and then stab Sony in the back with the new and improved Dreamcast in this alt timeline.

The PS2 came out in March 2000 and it wasn't until January 2001 Sega announced Dreamcast production would end in March that year. But the Dreamcast didn't just immediately vanish from the market after that. They had a ton of stock to sell through and it was still in stores well into 2002 (which is when I bought the one I still own at Electronics Boutique). Game releases continued on for a while too. The final American release was NHL 2K2 in February 2002, but in Japan it had pretty much a full release schedule that year. Ikaruga came out in September 2002, and it really wasn't until the end of 2004 that software really dried up. Though the last official release was in 2007, meaning the Dreamcast actually lingered on into the PS3's lifecycle.
The answer is simplePS1 is cheaper,more powerfull and has an infinitely better library
