what does /vr/ think of GOG and their goal of bringing Good Old Games™ back to the market and making them easily compatible with modern hardware?
>>
>GOG
>old games
You're like 10 years out of date, bro
>>
For the games that get the proper attention, it's great. Their Resident Evil 1-3 releases are easily the definitive versions of those games.
The games that don't are less great. Because they're "good enough", other people feel less inclined to take a crack at reviving them.

Good and bad, same as every other service.

I just wish they put the bare minimum effort into making all the other games not labelled with their "Good Old Games" brand name, actually run well. Feels like a crapshoot every time you boot up a game.
>>
>>12256320
I think repackaging poorly configured DOSBox packages and fan patched games and selling them is an example of how Polish people are creatively bankrupt and heavily interbred with gypsies.
>>
>>12256467
You want them to fix the games they did not work on? Do you also want cookies and milk? And an xbox?
>>
>>12256320
The only time I ever used the site my debit card information got stolen and the bank called me about someone trying to buy shit with it. Looked into it. Its happened to a few people. Downloaded steam and literally never looked back

The truth is that sales on GOG are abysmal. If something is released both on Steam and GOG it's going to be like 5% GOG, 95% Steam, which tells you just how many people buy games there. GOG made more sense back when Steam only released new games, but Steam made sure to rectify that and kill the competition.
GOG is also severely understaffed, when a game releases an update it has to go through them and they can't release it directly like they would on Steam, and there have been stories of devs having trouble getting paid and when they did, GOG making mistakes on the numbers.
At this point I'm sure more people pirate GOG than they do buy it, and I half believe the whole thing was originally devised as a scam to make piracy easier; but at least some devs got thrown a few pennies from games they made 30 years ago that they wouldn't have gotten otherwise which is still based in my book.

I like them and I've bought a lot of stuff from them, currently I'm playing Blade of Darkness.

>Good Old Games™ back to the market and making them easily compatible with modern hardware?

worked fine for WinXP. then they got greedy.... and later Windows versions are ass for retros.
>>
>>12256657
GOG only exists as an excuse to re-release old games without DRM so people can easily pirate them.
>>
>>12256716
>5% GOG, 95% Steam,
most gamers are morons if they love DRM steam and want more of it. those that aren't probably already pirated or actually wrote fanpatches for the games. they're just not rich enough to buy licenses to resell shit.
>>
>>12257005
>re-release old games without DRM so people can easily pirate them.

thats what publishers and steamboys always say.
>>
>>12257008
I'm still getting the games for free, dude.

Cool.
Just bought Clive Barker's Undying and having fun.

Yeah it’s a good model. The games are cheap and easy to run. I don’t have a problem with them. Very normie friendly. My wife plays their version of Roller Coaster Tycoon

I prefer Zoom Platform, they have the only good version of Duke Nukem 3D. GOG cucked out years ago and de-listed it from their store.
>>
>>12256716
there's over 50,000 games available on steam and around 5,000 on gog; of course steam is going to crush them in total sales. with 10x the games and many larger titles only releasing on gog long after they've reached their sales peak, steam sales better reflect it. anyway, they're still doing better than epic.
>>
>>12256320
I like it and its primarily the reason I support their service i just wish theyd release more stuff. They can take my money if theyd release more cool stuff
>>
>>12257380
They keep adding modern slop and doing the opposite of what their customers want. Meanwhile in their dreamlist section, it is clear people want games like: Freelancer, Black & White 1&2, NOLF and other old PC games.
>>
>>12257387
There's nothing they can do if the developers don't want their game in GOG.
>>
>>12257387
I mostly play on consoles now but I love GOG for having all the PC games I used to play back in the late 90's to early 2000's . They should just focus on being the retro PC store and not worry about new games. Trying to get old computer games properly running on new machines is always a hassle and I appreciate having a business that simplifies that process

Take old game.
Slap fan modification without testing anything.
Force pirate sites to remove content you release.
4chan zoomies scream SOUL to defend this garbage.
Gog sucks.
>>
gog galaxy 2.0 is equally as bad as steam
>>

no point in tipping off retards

The bar is very low. You're basically getting baited into supporting them because muh digital ownership, which is literally no different from downloading a ROM and patching it with mods.

Some people can't let go of the concept of physical ownership. Piracy and the digital economy destroyed it. Either accept Steam's "rent" model or just pirate everything and put it on a hard drive. Your discs will rot, your consoles will fall apart, and your "legally purchased" digital file makes no difference to anyone.

Software piracy exposed the fundamentally anti-human myth of IP. IP should not outlast the creator's working life and it should not be transferable.

GOG galaxy sucks and I get annoyed everything time they try to force me to use it.
Expanding into modern games was okay but they do a very bad job at keeping games update if a game gets frequent patches.
There's no way to download older versions of games like you can on Steam which is bad.
Some of their compatibility patches suck and I think they should always offer unmodified versions of games as an alternative.
They kind of poison the well at times in that sometimes a GOG release can make it very difficult to find actual original versions of a game after a while, like it's basically impossible to find a disk copy of Roller Coaster Tycoon online at this point every download is just the GOG version.
>>
>>12257323
GoG didn't have a choice. Zoom Platform is the only one who got them to sign a perpetual license, so they can't make them take it down.
I also like Zoom Platform though. My game is on there :^)
>>
>>12256320
Wish they would stop focusing on their shitty Galaxy client, and actually get publishers to pack in extras like they used to a decade ago. I also think it's hilarious they prioritize "bringing Good Old Games™ back to the market and making them easily compatible with modern hardware" when that was always their original intent.
>>12256645
Shut up nigger, GoG used to prioritize compatibility when they started.
>>
>>12256320
I support anyone that gives DRM free installers you can back up.
>>
>>12257590

archive.org?

Holly Molly this new captcha method is even worse that previous one.
>>
>>12256320
Shitty scam service run by poolacks, there is literally nothing wrong with Steam which is a much better platform, and American-made. Not only that, Valve is actively helping PC gamers by developing Proton, so games can run great on Linux. GoG has done jack shit.
>>
>>12256716
Yeah, but steam is annoying, locked down bullshit, while GoG offers drm free installers. Only issue is you have mods for the game and modders are little bitches and only use steam workshop. Although, there used to be a way to download workshop mods without owning the game on steam, not sure if it works still.
