the thinking man's dragon quest.
Red pill me on dq6. I have it on my 3ds right now. I've played 5 and love it.
6 has a really big world to exploreIt's my second favorite after 3
Problably the least memorable dragon quest but i like the underwater exploration, wish more J-RPG have stuff like that (Pokemon 3G for exemple)
By all accounts a good game with an interesting twist on how the world is explored, but something about the Dragon Quest formula was running a little stale by this point. It's why they pushed for bigger and better with DQ7, to a detriment, and then realised something brilliant with DQ8 as the first fully 3D entry.
>>12257235>I have it on my 3ds right now. Then keep those changes in mind:https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/Dragon_Quest_VI:_Realms_of_Revelation#Nintendo_DS_Remake
>>12257292DQ6 was a rush-job, likely due to Chrono Trigger having taken up the Horii/Toriyama/Sugiyama trio's time and energy.
>>12257376Sugiyama wasn't involved as far as I know, only the other two
>>12257235sell your ds copy and download the far superior translated snes rom.
>>12257235First half of DQ6 is very story oriented like DQ5.Second half of DQ6 is an open ended clusterfuck that barely gives you any hints of what to do like DQ2.It has a new class system that's a bit of a chore, don't expect anything clever from it, you just master base classes in order to unlock advanced classes and then end on sage or gladiator. Then grind forevermore if you want the hero class.
>>12257650>that barely gives you any hints of what to do like DQ2.I really wonder how you were supposed to know
>>12257296>removing a lot of mechanics and making it easierSFC it is
>>12257651That's what barely means.
>>12257660>removing a lot of mechanicsTell me if you ever recruit any monster other than a slime for the slime arena.
>>12257698>instead of reworking the mechanic so it's more viable/accessible, just gut it entirelyGame Freak tier move.
I want to fuck Jamiras
DQ7 but it wastes less of your time (note: it still wastes your time)
>>12257782It's conceptually unfixable unless you're willing to reinvent some game mechanism, essentially "gutting" it, so your point is dishonest at best.IMO they could have gone even further and turned the monster recruiting mechanism into something more like what we have in DQ8, where you just call your monster party to fight in your place for a few turns.
>>12257660the snes translation kinda sucks and it's very unstable
>>12257850DQ7 wastes more time than 6First 20 hours of DQ7 are 20 hours of nothing
>>12257698I always recruit monsters. My favorite is the Super Tensk, the most versatile of all monsters (I generally like making him a paladin). Also Lipps is the best magic user in the entire game. By endgame he has more MP than any human but he also gets the heaviest armors and even some really strong swords AND is unrealistically fast. So you have a bulky fast spellcaster with the most MP of anybody in your party. The monsters are all underrated.
>>12258041The monster mechanic is a big downgrade from 5. If I remember, the dragonmaster class can't even recruit dragons
>>12258041Lips level cap is 50, this definitely isn't great for postgame content, especially in a game such as DQ6 where you have to invest hours of class grinding in each monster, so you can't just replace them with a stronger monster like in DQ5.Also Lipps can't equip an echoing hat, so how can it be the best magic user in the game, hmm?
>>12258092In reality you're going to be at the end game around level 36-42, so the cap isn't a problem. Even if you're grinding the postgame stuff, the human spellcasters won't surpass his max stats until like level 65 or even 70 in some cases, and I personally have never needed to go past level 62 in the post-game stuff. Similarly, the walking corpse at level cap (also 50) is stronger than Hassan until he reaches 65. Walking corpse gets a breath skill that you would ordinarily only get in the ranger class, which requires three beginner classes and is one of the worst advanced classes, so that's a pretty good perk. That envenom skill is surprisingly overpowered against bosses in the early part of the mid game, since you normally wouldn't have that skill. But yes, the absolute best spell caster is in fact the lamp demon, since he can not only cast two spells per turn, but with the echoing hat he can cast four spells per turn. But it is so ridiculously difficult to recruit him even with savescumming, I've only ever bothered to use him once.>>12258052It's actually superior because 6 lets you assign classes to monsters. Yeah, you don't have as much variety of monsters, but the ones you do have are way stronger than most people give them credit for. In 5, monster hunting is pretty important to the story, whereas in 6 it's really just a bonus treat to add variety in replays. If you go into with that in mind, you will see it's better.
>>12258092Sorry to double post, but here's something to put into perspective: Lipps at level 50 has 400 base MP. Muriel will not surpass 400 MP until level 71.
>>12257943And it's mind-boggling how nobody's tried to fix it in all the decades it's been available.
>>12258130well somebody is trying to fixing it, but there nothing to show yethttps://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=39605.0
>>12258129>level 71Hum? That's a coincidence.
>>12257968its nowhere near 20 hours to reach the first battle, more like 6 or 7. and its easily the best part of the game where its still interesting and mysterious before becoming the biggest fetch quest of all time.
Why are the gryphons so sexually attractive
>>12258171>its nowhere near 20 hours to reach the first battleBut it's 20 hours to reach the Dharma Temple.
>>12256898I liked how a massive chunk of the game is just you bullshitting around until you wander across the next bit of plot
>>12258158Whoops, pretty bad mistake. I used this table and I obviously must have looked at the wrong row. https://www.woodus.com/den/games/dq6ds/charastats.php?who=millyIf I'm right this time, the +400 threshold for Muriel is 65, Chamoro at 63, and Barbara at 59.
It has the best looking party, and best looking Hero by far
>>12258171How the fuck did it take you 6-7 hours to reach the first battle in DQ7? Do you just suck at simple logic puzzles?
>>12258750Weird because a chunk of designs weren't even by toriyama. They honestly look pretty otherworldly, but I think that's also the point.
DQ6 is the most "nothing" game in the series. Really there is nothing that make it stand out in any way. I think the only thing that's sort of memorable is that if you beat the superboss, he kicks the final boss's ass for you.
>>12259469The aimlessness has a charm to it. The whole game felt like your party is stumbling into the story rather than being some sort of destined world-saving heroes. Falling into an inconspicuous well that sends you into the dream world where you discover a foe more powerful than the final boss was a very memorable sequence for me. The whole Nokturnus & Mortamor interaction is just cool as fuck. It's unapologetic powerlevel wank which I can't help but feel fondness for, especially since the games are already a hair's distance away from dragon ball. The game feels like a giant soup of occasional great moments scattered between many forgettable characters & mini storylines. Probably would've been better received if they narrowed its focus down.
The game is quite literally about finding yourself. That's why it's like that.
is DQ8 retro yet?
