If you wanted someone to fall in love with JRPGs, what games would you make them play? I somehow avoided every JRPG growing up, aside from Pokemon and Chrono Trigger, and I'm looking to discover what makes JRPGs special.
Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG will either make you love JRPGs or hold them up to their standardEarthbound requires more of a keen eye but the American setting really sells it for me and most people compared to swords and sorcery nonsense.
FF7
>>122570171. Looks horrible even for PS1 standards2. Terrible translation 3. Bad load times compared to anything on the SNES
>>12257025why are you playing FF7 on the SNES?
>>12257046because my NES is getting repaired
>>12257025>1. Looks horrible even for PS1 standardsYeah how about no
Dragon Quest 2, NES version. It's literally the game that broke Japan and made everyone "fall in love" with and kick started JRPGs.
>>12257046snes had rpgs with no loadtimes
>>12257060should I skip 1?
>>12257063No DQ2 is the direct sequel to 1
>>12257013The original Phantasy Star is right up there with Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest in terms of quality. The sequels are more divisive though most people really like 4
>>122570631 is good but is a lot more simple and a lot more grindy, grind is basically the point of the game and 80% of the gameplay
>>122570821 is only 10 hours it's not that big of a commitment
Chrono Trigger was what got me into JRPGs. In middle school I had a friend sleeping over and he brought it with him and my brother and I were beyond wowed (it helped that my buddy happened to be playing the Magus castle part, probably intentional on his part haha). Our only experience with JRPGs before that was renting Super Mario RPG and not knowing what the fuck was going on. We didn't know what RPG meant and I guess were expecting a more standard Mario game so it didn't really click at the time. Ended up loving SMRPG later after Chrono Trigger had helped us "get" the genre. So imo if Chrono Trigger didn't make you fall in love with the JRPGs, maybe they aren't for you. Maybe still give Earthbound a shot as it's another all time great but for VERY different reasons.
>>12257013Mystic Quest, although I still hate round based combat.
>>12257013Final Fantasy 9. Great story, memorable characters, pre rendered backgrounds, full of charm, system that isn't too convoluted.
>>12257013Any of the most popular ones, after I'd used magic to de-age the person down to like 14. If such magic were not available then I would not make the attempt at all
>>12257113Is this the take of someone who doesn't like JRPGs, or of someone who does but is insecure about it?
>>12257121No.
>>12257013Grandia
>>12257013Chrono Trigger and Terranigma.
FF7 unironicallyI remember when it came out and even back then it turned a bunch of neurotypicals around me into JRPG fans.
>>12257013Which console?
>>12257175any console is fine
>>12257013
Dragon Quest V is good one. Really epic story that spans decades. Also was the first game that did the "monster taming" thing(it was the biggest influence on pokemon) but it has real human party members as well + you get to pick a wife to marry in the game. Don't wanna spoil too much about it, but it's very grandiose and ambitious and cool.
>>12257060The first 3 Dragon Quest games (NES version) qualify for OP's question, and they're different enough that liking or disliking one isn't necessarily an indication you're gonna like or dislike the others. It's also important to note that it's a series where the English version (Dragon Warrior) is just better overall since they added battery saving instead of passwords.
why is no one mentioning FFVI? for the OP on the SNES it was originally released as Final Fantasy III. But now on the 6 game pixel remaster set you can get all of those. Get that for switch or whatever console and start with either FF3 or FF6. The one that really got me was FF7 coming across it around 99 I believe. My younger brother who's right on the line of zoomer/millennial I think Chrono trigger is what did it for him, the shitty ps1 version he didn't even mind the load times at that age I told him he has to try it on SNES, ask mom to order it online or play it on the computer but he wanted to do it that way.also for real for most american 90s and early 00's kids, POKEMON is the main "J" RPG that made everyone love the leveling up- EXP - battle system, types (magic) matchups, QUESTING/STORY, collecting Mon's....Play Pokemon Leaf Green if you didn't play it as a kid.
>>12257224>was the first game that did the "monster taming" thingWasn't that Megami Tensei (1987)? Or maybe Hack (1984)?
>>12257413Yes, that anon is mistaken. Other games had monster taming before. That said, the way it works in DQ5 where you have to beat a monster to have them join, and then it can disobey you if its wisdom isn't high enough (like gym badges), and the way you swap them into battle from the wagon does remind me of Pokemon more than other games.
>>12257017This, it's literally the game that made jrps popular in the west
>>12257381I personally think Final Fantasy 4 would be a way better introduction into JRPGs for someone who doesn't play the genre. It's just a nice straightforward game that tells a good story and doesn't complicate things. The party is predesignated and there are no weird mechanics. It's just a nice simple game that moves along quickly and doesn't have any weird quirks
>>12257063>leave castle>grins>activate bridgegrind>fight minibossgrind>fight final boss>return with princessthat about sums up dq1

>>12257106>FF IXSeconding this. It's straightforward and emphasizes the "enjoyment of the adventure" aspect of RPGs more than just clearing the game.If they're too tryhard and "mature" to deal with a mild cartoonish vibe then VII.If they think VII looks like ass and don't want to deal with party management nonstop for some reason then X.Maybe a Persona game if they're a certain type of person.
>>12257013I'd say go ahead and try Bravely Default. It has lots of QoL features, it has a beautiful world, an interesting story. If the voice acting doesn't turn you off then you are equipped to play many games.Moon is good too. Maybe a Tales of game if you don't like turn based.>>12257015Don't listen to this blind nintoddler fanboy. Chrono Trigger is good but Earthbound and SMRPG are garbage
>>12257013Chrono TriggerFinal Fantasy 6Lufia 2Super Mario RPGthank me later.
>>12257025instead of repeating some idiotic contrarian takes, go play the game. you'll find it very enjoyable.
>>12257056>Prerendered static backgrounds represent the range of visual quality in the entire game>>12257013RPGs are a genre that vary wildly in how well they age. A lot of recommendations are going to change depending on how much of a barrier to entry some "conventionally outdated" aspects are. Using FF1 as an example, the pixel remasters add a bunch of QoL and cheat garbage that are intended to force in modern sensibilities, but a lot of the game's identity gets ruined by them if you're actually interested in the original experience. It generally depends on your tolerances and levels of appreciation.
>>12257718>Prerendered static backgrounds represent the range of visual quality in the entire gameyes? that's the entirety of the field screens. that's what the game looks like.
>>12257205he said games that will pull him into the genre, not games that will disgust him. modern persona is for people that can't get enough generic highschool romcom anime.
>>12257765Thats not the same as active elements like character models, effects, or even the UI you insincere douche.
>>12257771FFVII is my favorite game but there's definitely some ugly design in there. Hilariously ugly.
>>12257790Gouraud shading is soulfull af you have a problem
>>12257792>Gouraud shading is soulfull af I totally agree. I was talking about the UI with the fucked up fonts and weird marble tiling.
>>12257797That's nitpicking
>>12257516Seems like it's been a while since you actually played it yourself...
>>12257798I wasn't attacking the game, like I said it's my favorite and I've been playing it since '01. Just pointing out that it does look like shit in many ways. The moments of beauty are stunning, but I see why people say it looks like shit if they never got into it.
>>12257013>PokemonShin Megami Tensei >Chrono TriggerFinal Fantasy, specifically the ones for the SNES
>>12257771you're the one being disingenuous. the field screens look great, the combat models look great, the combat affects looks great. perhaps some of the character models and non-combat element look bad, but that's most definitely not the entire game.
>>12257013For me, it's Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Most of the commonly recommended Final Fantasy games are a good starting point. Pick whichever one is the most alluring to you because there's no need to play them in any order. The settings vary quite a bit between FF games and one might interest you a lot more than the others.
>>12257015Good post. Super Mario RPG is a great gateway drug. So is CT if someone is turned off by Mario shit.My personal introduction to the genre is Final Fantasy IV (aka II).
>>12258008do they have any continuity between them whatsoever?
>>12258094NO. That's like their thing
>>12257610earthbound has shit gameplay but it's short and fun enough story wise that I can see it being good for someone that isn't as into the genre
>>12258094>>12258110They're literally the Call of Duty of their time (and their recent irrelevancy is proof of that)
>>12258369What does this even mean
>>12258369It's actually the opposite, the problem with FF is that it changes too much between games
>>12258094The only continuity that exists is a retcon from X that sets it in the same universe as VII.Said retcon completely ruins the entire fucking point of VII and I'm certain redditors came themselves all over it.
>>12257015Yes. These two games.
>>12257013>to fall in love with jrpgsFinal fantasy 7 and final fantasy tacticsThose were the games that got me into jrpgs
>>12260018>shitIf it was a girl I'd got with final fantasy 3 ds and tactics since the outfit changes would be hooks for most women
>>12257013>If you wanted someone to fall in love with JRPGsThis is an entirely stupid way of thinking and I don't understand why none of the other autists has called you on it.You don't "make" someone fall in love with a game genre. They're either attracted to it or they aren't. And this only applies to underage faggots, because in our day we played literally every single game and genre we could get our hands on and developed are tastes that way. Zoomers will only ever look at something on their phone and avoid it if their eceleb feudal lord doesn't order them to play it. So, I guess that's the answer to your question, if you care about the opinions of fucking broccoli headed retards, make a youtube channel with a clickbait thumbnail and a red arrow pointing to the game you want them to play.
