I think it's very cheap on Nintendo's part to resort to emulation when they have the source code.

They don't have the source code for any of the games they didn't develop and probably don't have it for a lot of games they did but of course it's cheap, the whole idea is to make as much money as they can while spending as little as possible.

>they have the source code.
Do they? Didn't they hire a studio to port OoT to GC and later another studio to remake it on 3DS

Nintendo could turn its legacy platforms into a “fantasy console” like Pico-8, allowing autistic developers to create content for it. These games could be published on “Nintendo Classic Online” or a similar extra tier for the Switch/2 subscription, with payment in forms appealing to that community like the work of Kaze Manuel with Mario 64, the developer who ported Portal 2 to the N64 (that faggot has a demo with megatextures for N64), and others who romhack SNES, GBA, and more. With this Nintendo can have a "grey" zone sbout "official non-canon" games like that Zelda Rom hack that take place between OoT and MM and make profit of it.
This is a millionaire idea and the one who do this first (Microsoft, Sony or Sega) could milk good shekels out of it.

Nintendo's motto is minimum effort, maximum profit

My /vr/ confession is this service is how I do the majority of my retro gaming nowadays.

50 bucks a year is still better than what Sony charges for their online.

Nintendo has source code for basically everything they've ever done, however nobody at the company would know what to do with any of it. I've exposed this before but Nintendo doesn't program their own games, they never have and never will. A famous example that some people do know is Donkey Kong arcade, the team at Nintendo designed the game on paper and then the design documents just got shipped off to a company called Ikegami Tsushinki who actually made it reality.
Up until recently when they just outright purchased them, Nintendo outsourced all programming work to a company called SRD. SRD in basic terms made the game engines, wrote all the code and then creates what are essentially level editors and other middleware that's easy for the artists and level designers to create everything you actually see in the games. Then they'll usually have a couple basic "programmers" whose job it is to tweak minor shit that SRD already wrote so they can get the game working and feeling exactly how they want. The SRD crew often even goes uncredited in these games, usually either a generic SRD special thanks is given or they'll credit whoever was in charge of whatever given team within SRD programmed said game.

Anyway, regardless of if they have the source code for the games or not they'd have to hand off porting duties to someone else just because they don't have any in house programming talent.

>50 bucks a year for emulation of dripfed titles is a good deal
If retards didn't exist, Nintendo would've bankrupted several times already

They'd rather just have some random team of autistic Europeans work on emulators for their old consoles and throw as many roms as it as they can (even for shit that isn't even theirs), than bother with getting fucking 6502/z80 assembly and old ass C code for multiple games to work on Switch. It's understandable.
Even if they did go through the trouble of porting, you idiots would call it "Sovless" or some bullshit for not being exactly 1:1 the original experience.
