I think it's similar in some ways to board games. The average person will often have a funny story of them playing Monopoly with friends and then conflate it with Monopoly being a good board game. It's the same thing with modern video games. People will enjoy the story, environments, and characters of a video game without actually thinking about whether the minute-to-minute gameplay was even enjoyable. Oftentimes people will only enjoy a game as a result of huge marketing pushes for said games or a perceived sense of "community" when they feel that thousands of others are playing the same game.
