i really want to love Strife, it's definitely an influential and "important" game in the grand scheme of immersive gameplay, however i find the actual levels outside of the hub areas to be lacking.
>>12258184Agreed. I quit during the sewer level, that shit was unbearable.
>>12258184I like Strife, but what games did it influence? The open game design had already been done better by RPGs like TES1 and UU.Full voice acting was already pretty common 2 years before its release.FPSRPG would become a big genre 20 years later, but there's no direct lineage back to Strife, those later non-retro FPSRPGs all take inspiration from mid2000s slop.
>>12258184>Strife>influentialIt's not influential at all.

>>12258184Strife, ShadowCaster, CyberMage, Quarantineall those early attempts to expand FPS into something more fucking suckedlet's be real: the original Half Life suckedRise of the Triad barely not sucked but nobody bought it
>>12258184Mold man covered years ago. Seemed like a better made Doom clone.
>>12258430>let's be real: the original Half Life suckedIt's graphically outdated, but I enjoyed it more than HL2, that's for sure. But now I would play Black Mesa.
>>12258184>it's definitely an influential and "important" game in the grand scheme of immersive gameplayI don't think I have ever encountered a single mention of it by anyone who didn't have a zdoom or doomworld forum account.
>>12258184I enjoyed this game a lot EXCEPT for those little spiders. Hated those fucking things and the noise they make
>>12258184I've spent a total of probably 2 hours over 3 different playthroughs trying and failing to escape the starting hub level and get to the sewer to do whatever the quest was that the dude in the pub asks you to do
>>12258284Civvie11 has entered the chat.
>>12258430wow. genuinely terrible take. can't tell if bait or not.Strife and Cybermage are objectively great games.HL1 mogs HL2.Rise of the Triad sucks, what the actual fuck is wrong with you my plebeian friend?
>>12258727Wow... Erm... What a genuinely terrible take. You must be fun at parties.
>>12258727>HL1 mogs HL2.It really doesn't. While both are great 2 is even better.
>>12258184Rogue was really good at scuttling the fun of their own games with shitty enemies
>>12258184No, it's not an immersive sim
>>12258184The hub areas are essentially the game's identity. The levels outside them are all over the place, but I remember that being the appeal of the game at the time. The gameplay was portrayed as wide-ranging and unpredictable, a main hub area, and multiple paths you can take. I always liked the game and it's a shame we never got a sequel that was true to the original. We never got a sequel at all. I wonder who owns the IP now.
>>12258909Robot/mechanical enemies are almost never fun to fight.
>>12258430You're looking at them with 30-odd years of history between those games and you. A lot of them are experimental, trying out concepts that hadn't been present before. It's unavoidable that their implementation would often leave something to be desired, and the end product might suffer for it.

>>12258739yeah bro i'm a heckin redditor and you don't have the shittest taste in the world. that must be it.>>12258905complete delusion. you have shit taste, it's fine. but don't pretend it's better than 1.
>>12258184I quit pretty early on. It is a fine game but I am not invested especially when you've played some amazing .WADs.Had I played it in the era of dial-up internet it would have been amazing.
>>12258184I watched Civvie's review and it was enough to convince me to never touch that game. It's as if the developers decided to combine all of the unwanted and tedious aspects of FPS games into one.
>>12260825I played it when it came out and I don't need some internet persona's opinion to tell me if it's good or not. It's not perfect, but the idea of multiple choices and multiple endings was very ahead of it's time. I loved the interface, the sprites and player models. But constantly dropping in toxic pollution wasn't that fun.
>>12260825No it isn't. Civvie, whoever that is, sounds kinda stupid, or maybe the review was good and you interpreted it stupidly. Strife isn't the best game in the world but it's worth playing.
