what are the go to retro games for someone who completely missed most of the classics?
I'm not talking about obscure stuff, but like I only played mario on the nes, duck hunt and super mario, sonic 2 on the genesis, mgs1 on the PS1, that's about it.
now that even a phone can emulate almost everything, what are the go to classic games that everyone is expected to have played?

Any retro mainline pokemon (GB to GBA)
>>
I will give you my top NES GO-to games for just having fun.

3D World Runner
Kirby’s Adventure
Dragon Spirit
Tetris
Double Dragon
Ninja Gaiden
Rad Racer
Dr Mario
Star Tropics
Super Mario Bros. 3

Any TMNT game
>>
Download a NES emulator and any "999 in 1" ROM. Those have a lot of hacks and stuff but probably the first 100 or so games are the real deal, you have lots of early and classic Famicom games there that include the Big Three of golden arcade era so you're covered there, and also has seminal retro classics that even many old people in USA for example don't know about, like Battle City or Circus Charlie.
Go nuts
>>
Your request is going to be far too subjective.
Here is my advice to figure out what you want to.
When I want to try something new I find one of those YouTube videos where they show clips of every game released for a console.
If I see something interesting and Jen I write down the name and check it out.
Keep in mind that most of these videos will just be clips of the first 15 minutes of a game. But it still helps me find something interesting.

what a pointless thread
just lurk moar retard. its a board about retro games ffs

There are plenty lists online, but if you ask ME, I think this is the best list that will please everyone:
>Super Mario World
The blueprint of 2D platformers, not much else to add
>GTA Vice City
Great atmosphere and soundtrack, polished/modern feel, definitely good to check before GTA6. Everyone and their mom played it
>Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
There's obviously Symphony of the Night and Super Metroid too, but I think this one is the most accessible out of the bunch. Perfect entry into "Metroidvania" subgenre
>Super Mario 64
A bit dated controls and camera, but basically influenced just about every game after it. The moveset, the hub world, the star system, just about everything about it made videogame history
>Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
About same as Mario 64. Influenced a shitton of games including GTA. I'd just warn you that it starts slow, if it's not your thing then don't force it. Still, this is one game you have to play before you die.
Avoid:
Outdated NES stuff—if you're new, don't force yourself to play it. Half the people burn out on these games, thinking that's all that retro games have to offer. Just because they were popular in 1989 doesn't mean they are easy to get into nowadays.
PS1 classics like Tomb Raider, FF7, Crash—same story. Half of these were good for their time when no one figured out 3D yet. Don't be surprised when you realize they control and play like it's 1997.
JRPGs—either they are for you or not. Don't believe anyone who thinks any of these games are "must play masterpieces", you will quickly find out the gameplay is trash in most of them.
2D fighters—again, either they are your thing or not. Either you get into the genre properly with Street Fighter 2, Marvel vs Capcom 2 and so on, or just don't bother.
3D fighters—frankly, modern Tekken is just more polished, and the only good SoulCalibur games were 1/2.
Arcade genres like shmups, beat em ups and so on—again, either you like them or you don't.

>don't play arcade games
>fighting games are bad
>old games are bad unless ninetendo
>t. (You)
OP this guy is a douchebag and you should ignore what he says.
>>
>>12258950
A little error on my part, I meant more like "be cautious with" instead of full on "avoid". Otherwise, you're implying things I didn't say, not my problem you can't read
>>
>>12258976
You meant what you wrote the first time.
>not my problem you can't read
Okay
maybe just don't say all arcade games and retro fighters and NES games are bad then
>>
>>12258870
Crash is fucking great, zoomie.
>>
>>12259010
>maybe then don't say [things I just made up]
I'm just saying that they aren't good as ENTRY stuff. I'm saying this because I've seen countless people who think
>I MUST play through NES Castlevanias!!
>oh, so FF is a classic series… but I don't like RPGs… No, I MUST play all of it
And then they all burn out quickly, or worse, become those zoomers who think "all retro games are just blind nostalgia".
Just because it's not great as ENTRY stuff doesn't mean it's bad at all. I've played 2D fighters seriously and I love them, I'm just not a retard who will tell people to start retro games from them
>>12259018
Crash is trash, simple as

Quit retarding up the thread for no reason
>>
>>12259018
They're good but nothing espectacular, just like Mario or Sonic
>>
>>12259038
you're pulling fucking Sonic into this. Crash games are way better than Sonic games
>>
>>12259035
All I did was point out how he said arcade games and fighting games and all NES games that aren't Nintendo are bad. Like, come on, at least throw a bone to my boi Raiden II.

Maybe post some games instead of being rude for no reason

most games of 8 bits systems aged terribly. They were notorious at their time but they are not fun to go back to. 16 bits at the very least is where it's at and you can't go wrong from picking any popular game on them.
>>
>>12258803
Here's some NES games to get you started:

Batman
Battletoads
Blaster Master
Castlevania 1 & 3
Contra
Crystalis
Duck Tales
Mega Man series
Metroid
Ninja Gaiden series
Punch Out
SMB 3
TMNT 2 & 3
Zelda 1 & 2

Here's some Sega games. There's a lot more I could recommend but I don't want this to become some autistic list of every game I like. Also, a couple of these are multiplatform but the best version is on Genesis:

Alien Soldier
Beyond Oasis
Castlevania Bloodlines
Comix Zone
Contra Hard Corps
Crusader of Centy
Earthworm Jim (best version is actually on sega cd)
Flashback
Ghouls n Ghosts
Golden Axe 2
Gunstar Heroes
Landstalker
Lost Vikings
Phantasy Star 2 & 4
Shadowrun
Shining Force 2
Shinobi series
Streets of Rage 2
TMNT Hyperstone Heist
X-Men 2
Ys 3

thanks madude

thanks all the dudes for recs
>>
>>12260195
Don't pay 100% of attention to that list
For example, play Shining Force 1 before 2
>>
>>12259667

For Sega, the ones that really made a lasting impression on me were the following…

Sega Genesis:

Castlevania: Bloodlines
Dune: Battle for Arakkis
Panorama Cotton
X-men II
Aladdin

Sega CD:

Dune
Soulstar
Mansion of Hidden Souls
Sonic CD
Snatcher

They really stood out and made the systems worth owning

I think you're underselling the nes a bit. It's true that it can be jank but there's a lot that aged well. Off the top of my head: ice n fire, punch out, kirby's adventure, the mario games, blaster master, journey to silius, battletoads, and u-four-ia all still feel and look good as a modern player going back. Plus games like the original zelda which feel a bit stiff but are still great if you can get into them. Obviously you shouldn't force yourself into things you can't enjoy but it can be a fine starting point and I think the library is worth a look through and try.

>now that even a phone can emulate almost everything, what are the go to classic games that everyone is expected to have played
You have to be organically interested in it for you to enjoy it. Whenever games get brought up look up the ones that seem interesting to you and start with those
