It's crazy underrated and actually has a lot in common with NiGHTS. Both games have action-packed stages with a main objective, but with plenty of variables to optimize for a higher ranking score. And then there are the side quests, NiGHTS has those adorable nightopians to collect, while Burning Rangers has the rescued people's emails to gather. But what really gets me is how experimental both games are. The time limits may not be as punishing as a Time Over, but they still have a way of getting to you (waking up that clock on NiGHTS or running out of Limit Fireblasts on Burning Rangers).
Both Burning Rangers let you choose between a male and and attractive girl characters and NiGHTS let you perform these incredible acrobatic air moves, NiGHTS The Jester in NIGHTS with its flying jester tricks and Burning Rangers with those sleek ranger suits that let you do some wild aerial maneuvers. The boss fights in both games feel similar in structure too, intense, multi-phase battles where you need quick reflexes and pattern recognition to succeed, which keeps you coming back for more.
Replay value is huge because of the different paths, character choices, and difficulty levels. It’s crazy to think how these games are considered classics in an alternate timeline where the Saturn was celebrated and beloved, a true video games paradise. But in this current timeline, Saturn is almost a punchline, barely remembered, and these masterpieces are mostly forgotten or mocked. It’s like we’re in a weird timeline shift where history rewrote the console’s legacy, and now they’re just relics of a “what could have been.” Honestly, I wish more people knew how awesome these games are, and how much they still hold up today.

Why are there so many Burning Rangers threads lately? Did a YouTube make a video about it?
>>
Pretty mediocre game

The main theme is cool tough
>>
>>12259434
The ending theme is even better, but you never got there

idk but it's been trending on retro gaming tt

>action-packed stages
BR is slow paced as fuck except the boss fights and that one vehicle section.

Burning Rangers an Nights are arcade games at heart, and by that point video games had already shifted away from this kind of design. Nowadays we're at the point where we have "retro gamers" who don't even comprehend arcade design, let alone like it.

Not 100% arcade though, both games have elements of console games in the form of collecting and unlocking new content.
Both games have a lot of replay value, it's just modern humans are incapable of understanding

Even by the mid 80s, the vast majority were not playing actual arcade titles for score challenges.

Arcade design isn't just scoring

It's a cool game but pretty much nobody in the west bought it because by that time everyone had moved on to the PSX/N64 and the Dreamcast was right after corner with the ps2 soon to follow

It’s obviously unfinished. The graphics are ambitious for the system but janky in practice. It’s very, very short. They cut co-op mode. They probably cut a lot more. We get plenty of emails someone took a few hours and typed up for filler. The cutscenes are basically storyboard outlines (the one with the dolphin stands out in my mind). It’s all very basic, even for the time it was released. I mean this is well after Mario 64 and Tomb Raider. I think the Peruvian Caves part of Tomb Raider or the first floor of Peach’s Castle both have more content than this entire game.

The “person giving you directions” gimmick isn’t a great one and has big problems with accuracy. The “surprise fire explosion” gimmick every few steps is also kinda silly.

They made a good enough engine for a solid exclusive 3d platformer which the Saturn desperately needed, but only the last level has any real platforming.

This type of third person shooting was done better on other consoles. Especially Jet Force Gemini a year later. Similar game but it blows Burning Rangers out of the water as a third person shooter and its many times longer with bigger environments. Even the third person Duke Nukems are better.

I’m not saying it’s a terrible game but it’s not some masterpiece. It had fun music and good bosses. It could have been really great with some more time in the oven. It needed to be multiple times as long as it was. What we got is… unfinished.

It's more crazier once you notice how much every 3D Sonic calls back to this game.
From Maria's illness to world ending legless kaijus.

>Especially Jet Force Gemini a year later.

I don't get the Jet Force Gemini meme. The aiming controls and camera are so atrocious in that game it makes it unplayable, and look, I'm not one of those modern retards who go like "it's not like modern gaming so it's bad design", I've played HUNDREDS of 5th gen games, and Jet Force Gemini has some of the worsts controls and cameras I've ever seen. I was memed into thinking I still had this long amazing game to play instead I dropped this piece of shit after 1-2 hours because I couldn't take it anymore.

It’s kind of like tank controls, it worked fine back in the day but definitely seems outdated now. It’s like playing Tomb Raider or Croc, it feels normal to my old brain. You have to get used to strafing and using the R-button in most combat situations. I don’t think JFG is any more unplayable than Burning Rangers. There’s way less graphics issues, slowdown and collision problems.

IDK what to tell you if you think Jet Foce Gemini has the worst camera or controls you’ve ever seen, I’d even say they’re both better than Burning Rangers. I’d say Bubsy 3d is the worst 3d camera I’ve ever seen, Sonic Adventure maybe the glitchiest. If you drop Burning Rangers after 2 hours its because you beat the game already.

I really prefer 3rd person shooters like One and Apocalypse for that era anyways. The Syphon Filters and Winback are great too.

But I think Jet Force Gemini and Burning Rangers are good too compare to each other because they’re simlar games but Burning Rangers is a bit more arcadey and JFG is a bit more of a Rare collectathon. Typically I’d go with the Sega arcade style game but in this case the Rare game feels like a next gen game, it’s just way more polished and has way more content.

I think JFG's execution as a TPS is very interesting and I like how it allows for independent movement of your character directions and the aim, but you must change the default controls on the option menu and set it to Expert, this way you can move in all 8 directions while in aiming mode, instead of just left and right. Game changer.
>>12262023
I agree with a lot of what you say but I still think BR is one of the most impressive 3D action games of 5th gen. I don't mind the game being short as it has replay value
>>
>>12259440
How do you know that? Actually, just go back and stay there.

Not him but tiktok reels come up on insta all the time.
Can confirm my zoomer retro mutuals are posting a lot of Burning Rangers stuff

I'm glad new generations can have their sega phase, too.

And unlike mine ten years ago, the emulators are actually good this time? Remember how shitty ssf was?

Cool tech demo. Nowhere near long enough. Needed more levels. Could be cool decompiled and with a level editor to really bring it to life. A Dreamcast sequel would have been great.
