>a perfect decade of quality
>instantly lose their touch the moment Microsoft acquires them

I don't get it. They were literally untouchable. It's like Microsoft put a curse on them or something.

>tendies love something
>it doesn’t actually hold up to real competition
many such cases

its been almost 25 years. just let it fucking go already...

their games were falling off long before microsoft bought 'em, nintendo sold microsoft what was essentially a wringed out dried out old lemon

>>12260685
all the core talent had left already before the buyout. nintendo smartly saw the writing on the wall before it happened.

Nah they were waning before that happened, but it wasn't drastic or for certain they'd lose it.
They were definitely worse off after becoming M$'s bitch though.
Nintendo could likely be a shit boss but at least they cared about games

An incredibly apt description kek.

You're missing the big picture. It's the 00's fault. The 00's were soulless and the video game industry became very corporate, many dev and publishing companies were bought during that time and others died as smaller ones couldn't keep up with the production cost anymore.

So yes M$ is at fault, but it's not just them, it's also Sony, Nintendo, everyone. It's the 00's.

Rare peaked during their Ashby Computers/Ultimate Play the Game days. You can tell the Pickford brothers thought they'd sold out by moving to Nintendo and I agree with them on that.

Blast Corps is a good lark though

Rare brought it upon themselves. They put themselves up for sale thinking Nintendo would pay them even more money to keep them, but Nintendo ultimately didn't care and Microsoft snatched them up before they could change course.

It really did die a horrible death. I think it was funding and project management. Those N64 games had good project management, and the guys worked crazy hours but got paid decently well and made great games they were passionate about and they were given just enough time to do it. There was this fiercly competitive aspect where the teams were all worked different barns at Rare HQ and competed on who could make the best game. But they went over budget and passed deadlines frequently. The consumers didnt mind because the games were good but the books weren’t adding up. Absolutely every game needed to be a big hit, if every game was over budget and past deadline.

In later years it was becoming a bigger problem and stuff like Star Fox Adventures and Conker were getting mangled, torn apart, and frankensteined back together making games that weren’t as cohesive and weren’t selling quite as well. Some of this rebuilding games thing is normal but not quite to this extent. Kameo was even in the same boat at the same time as Starfox and Conker, it was just finally pieced together years later. Donkey Kong Racing? Never released. Sabreman Gamecube/Xbox game? Never released.

The FPS team left after Perfect Dark. The “make an even bigger 3D collectathon” thing was getting old after DK64 and Banjo Tooie and all the other ones crowding the market. It wasn’t even seriously tried again by Rare, probably because it was too expensive to make something as big as possible on Xbox.

After the buyout, they got less funding, the culture changed from the passionate, competitive teams in separate barns to being just another studio. Devs likely got pay cuts if they stayed, and tighter deadlines that were now enforced. Microsoft didn’t give a shit about them. Just shit out a game fast. So, that’s what they did. More talent left, quickly. They got assigned to kinect duty. Until finally it was basically just Gregg Mayles and a few retards. He just left in 2025.
