I'm not usually one of those people who think games age, but I think these games definitely had a time and a place and that's long gone. maybe because they relied more on the multimedia spectacle, feeling like you're in a virtual world, the atmosphere. the gameplay was bland even back then and the walking simulation has been done better since.

You can't get a feel for how good the AI is in Halo because everything is either a fucking straight corridor or a giant field. Halo Reach's AI was pretty damn good though.

I have never understood the hype for Half Life. Almost any other game that's often claimed to be one of the all time greats I can at the very least see why what it did was revolutionary or why everyone would like it but Half Life is a complete mystery to me. Now I'm not the biggest fan of FPS games(I like a number of them but it's never been my go to genre) so maybe I really am just missing some important context but what did it do that makes it so above and beyond everything else that had come before? Is it just that it has a story? If so it's not a particularly good or engaging one it's kind of just basic set dressing and almost comes off as an excuse to have you going through very samey looking rooms and areas the entire game. Actually on that note Xen, which from what I can tell a lot of people seem to not like, was my favorite part of the game because it was finally something different lmao. I just don't get the hype, to me it's pretty dull game that seriously lacks variety and isn't particularly fun to play. I'll take Quake over it any day of the week.

Nothing about HL 1 stands the test of time, it was innovative but its not nearly as fun as Quake or Doom, which is difficult though since it doesnt get as fun as Quake and Doom with shooters. Those two are timelese shooters, put someone in front of them that can get into FPS gameplay and who doesnt get filtered by old graphics and they will have a blast.

(hl2 best shooter ever made though)

I have never gotten a chance to play any HL game despite constantly seeing it in passing and thinking it looked cool. I like how the gun moves around in first person like it has weight and heft to it.
