yeah crts are currently valuable af. you either luck into someone throwing it out or you have to drop at least $100 on one

Sorry anon, check facebook marketplace. Facebook has lots of boomers who dont know what they have and list it as an "old tv"

youre right. I was using crt for search and old tv brings up a lot more searches

Thrift stores tend to refuse these citing a no junk policy from back when these were literally worthless. Goodwill even refused to take some rc cars because I didn't have batteries for them.

19 inch or bigger, small sizes are fine but you'll feel underwhelmed when playing light gun games which you want to do. 6th gen loves 25 inches and up due to all the finer details and draw distances being better on a bigger physical image.

27" is the best balance between size and weight. Unless you're a pencil neck twink they can be moved alone easily. 32 and above gets tricky.

I've flipped a ton of CRTs and I'd say the most important thing when looking is geometry, inputs, and size. Size is objective but usually people like 20-27". Inputs:

RF = shit
Composite = okay
Svid and component = good

Geometry is the hardest part because you literally need to look at every TV to determine. A lot of nice TVs have shit geometry and a lot of shit TVs have nice geometry, you just have to test it yourself.

CRTs are a major tangible part of the experience. I don't generally emulate 8-bit games because the scanline flicker, blending, and static snow add so much to the image. This still image doesn't do it justice, it's something you have to see in person

>How much should I pay for them?

$15-$25 at Goodwill or most thrift stores. You can also try calling any old hospitals, TV stations, radio stations, or newspaper offices in your area. Ask to talk to the engineering or IT department. They will usually have old TVs collecting dust in a closet somewhere. Estate sales are very good source for CRTs, too.

>Which ones are the best to look out for?

Sony is by far the best picture quality and Sanyo is probably second best. Sonys are the most highly sought after and command some stupid prices on the secondary market.

>Best screen size for the common resolutions from snes to ps2 era.

19" is probably the best on average but IMO, the bigger the better. I have a 32" Sanyo for Gamecube and Wii, a 36" Sony Trinitron for PS2 and Dreamcast, and a 13" Fisher for NES and SNES.

Low hours. Good Condition. Avoid HD 1080i modern tvs that upscale and introduce lag. Get a 480p monitor for HD games.

27 is the most common. Any size bigger is going to be heavy as fuck and require 2 people to move.

You have to check the drop off areas out back. Some Goodwills take crts, but dont sell them in store. They go to an electronics recycle place usually, but what happens to them when the store is closed is none of their buisness.

I have close to, if not already, 100 crts in my possession. Harder to find now, but I still ended up with another 15 or so this year from various sources. Pic being my last find that I took off the porch of an abandoned, boarded up house. They also had a big living room console tv, but the stairs leading up to the porch have literally disintegrated since I got this one.

>I was planning on probably selling off a couple at a few small game pop-up swap-meets I sell and trade some other excess stuff at.
nta but sell some of that. hows shipping for crts?
>>
>>12262204
I'd say if it's in good shape and has no issues, $150 is fair, but you have to be pretty quick to buy in 2026 because there are way more buyers than sellers right now.
>>
>>12261847
>lung cancer from vaping
The lung cancer from smoking is from inhaling burning plant matter not the nicotine.
For example, an English gov't analysis has shown vaping is at least 95% safer than smoking. There is no evidence it's bad for your health at all but there's obviously something. Better than eating chicken nuggets.
Vaping isn't "cool" but I'm not going to pretend it causes cancer remotely near someone who inhales burning leaves.

You can still get them free or under $40 on marketplace but it varies by area. More premium brands go for more. Just look up a video on brands and connection types, tvs with s-video and up inputs will go for more. I would get one now before things get worse. Just in the past two years even, they've gotten more scarce and expensive. And don't use ebay unless desperate because they're way more expensive and never go above 13 inch due to shipping costs and risk of breaking.

If desk gaming close up, 13 inch is cool and works. Sharp image. 20 inch also good but are a bit bulkier so takes up more space. I think 27 inches are very good and best of all worlds size without being too heavy. Don't go above 32 inch typically unless gaming all the way across a large living room or some shit. They're just too heavy and annoying to move and they start to get a bit worse for close viewing due to image stretch and the mask being more visible close up.
>>
>find cool crt locally
>guy is asking $500 for it
>even on ebay the price is like half that
why even bother? it's just going to sit there for months until the price is lowered
>>
>>12261316
When you buy them in person I would check the glass screen for scratches. I remember buying a Sony Wega 27in for 30 then realized it had a deep scratch at home. I was cool with it for a while but I just kept noticing the scratch and tossed out the CRT.
>>
>>12262963
You are going to find people like this selling things all the time, they aren't serious.
>>
>>12262967
this is the biggest problem i've found with larger CRTs as of late - you think you have a steal and there there's always at least one annoying scratch in the middle
>>
>>12262967
>>12263709
Is there no liquid glass filler or some kinda shit for car windows that can be used to make it atleast less noticeable?
>>
>>12263734
I've never took a deep look into finding a good solution. I tried buffing out the scratch with cerium oxide glass polish but the scratch was way too deep.
>>
>>12261568
Some people don't like the distortion you get on the edges of the screen, but I feel it's really only noticeable during scrolling in 2D games and even then it's not a huge deal imo

You can maybe get 300 bucks for it, but you're responsible for shipping it, and you're liable if it doesn't arrive in good condition, and the guy on the other end can just decide it's not what he paid for and send it back (possibly damaged again en route) because PayPal are 100% for the buyer and nobody else.

Something like this happened to me, new item sold, returned used, had to return the money and hold onto a worse item I couldn't resell.

buying CRTs on ebay is full retard, both price wise and the fact it will not arrive in 1 piece. every single day on fb or reddit i see some retard buying a CRT online and it showing up smashed to fuck.

if you want one just be happy with whatever one you can grab for less than 50 bucks from some old lady cleaning out her garage. dont be some retard that thinks he needs a PVM or a certain model
