21 november 1990 to 21 november 1991

I don't see another vr console with a better first year
>>
It's pretty good. The Saturn and PS2 also had very strong first year lineups.
>>
>>12261960
>Saturn
I came here to mention this, the Saturn first year library is pretty great although a lot of the games I like are ports so it doesnt get full credit.
>>
>>12261960
>PS2 also had very strong first year lineups.

Not really

I'm not talking about the whole 2001 ,the PS2 first year is 4 mars 2000 to 4 mars 2001 and it's pretty disappointing
>>
>>12261972
Panzer Dragoon, Astal, and Rayearth are all pretty good. But yeah, it's mostly ports (of great games).

>>12261978
Tekken Tag and Armored Core 2 are good enough for me, to be honest. Onimusha, Gradius II & III, SSX, Dark Cloud, and Gungriffon Blaze are nice extras.

I think SNES had a great launch year, but I got mine (and my Genesis) around 1994, which was amazing because it was s great year for both of them plus I had all the back catalog.
The console I actually got at release for the first time was N 64. And despite what may seem a small selection of games I actually played this console a lot the first year, despite also having a PS1 and a PC, N64 took all my attention between SM64, Pilotwings, Wave Race, MK Trilogy and KI Gold. SM64 alone was a lot of hours of 3D tripping balls, no other 3D game like it.
Pilotwings, as a kid I didn't have the patience for fine adjustments so I never really got all the medals especially the hang glider fucked me up, but I still spent quite some time just flying around these 3D maps, exploring the little states with the jetpack, and flying around freely on Birdman mode, good memories. As an adult I actually completed it, my kid self would have loved the moonshoes missions.
KI Gold and MKT were the logical conclusion to the western fighting game boom. I was a fan of both franchises and had the previous games on SNES/Genesis, so I was in love with the latest entries, played a lot of VS with friends.
Finally, Wave Race was a game I got without knowing what I was getting into, other than water jetski racing, and it became THE game of that summer for me. I would spend all day at the pool with my friends, then when the sun was setting we'd go and continuing the water play in video game form. Excellent controls, music and atmosphere.
I didn't buy the other games but I remember renting Cruisn USA once, it was okay, remember having fun unlocking the secret vehicles like the school bus, and also rented Shadows of the Empire a few times, was really mind blowing, and was well timed as I was getting into Star Wars with the re-release of the original trilogy in theatres. Eventually got it when the players choice edition came out.
Never tried the Hockey game but I also hear it's a good one.

What did the Saturn have, besides tech demo 3d fighting and 3d driving?
>>
It's fine but Ps1 and ps2 mog it.
>>
>>12261953
The SNES also finished pretty strong too with several classics being released post Saturn/PS1 and a few great games even coming out after the N64
>>
>>12262027
Didn’t read all of your blogpost but yes 1994 is probably the best year for the SNES and the 16 bit war in general
>>
>>12262110
Imo

1990-91=amazing start
1992-93=quite a letdown
1994-95=best years
>>
>>12262247
92 had Zelda, Contra 3, Turtles IV, Street Fighter 2 (outshadowed by it's upgrades but it was HUGE deal at the time) etc....even some good B-tier stuff like Super Adventure Island. I'll agree that 93 was kind of weak though. Star Fox was the big Nintendo game of the year and while I like Star Fox....it's not a class on par with Nintendo's best. Sega really ate Nintendo's lunch in 1993.

i played every single one of these as a kid besides sc4. never really got into pilotwings and probably only played gradius a handful of times but the rest ive played a lot
>>
>>12262287
Pilotwings is a lowkey great multiplayer game. Get a few beers with friends and pass the controller back and forth. It's good shit pal
>>
>>12262247
>>12262278
1993 was amazing: mega man X, cybernator, sunset riders, goemon 2, the first 2 Super Butoden games
>>
>>12261953
actraiser alone takes the gold medal if you ask me
>>
>>12262332
Yeah, I can't divorce these retrospectives from my personal context as a burger. MMX came out in 1994 here and I wouldn't play Goemon 2 until years later on an emulator. And the Butoden games suck ass. There is plenty of good stuff in 1993 though - Secret of Mana, Lost Vikings etc. It's just a good deal weaker than 1992 or 1994.

I was there and rented games on a weekly basis. I'd play dozens of games per year. Trust me, 1993 was not half as good as 1992 or 1994. That doesn't mean there were good games though.
>>
You must be kidding, the SFC had a VERY slow first year, most third parties were in "wait & see" mode because nobody knew if customers would buy the platform. The Famicom was still Queen and every console that came out couldn't dethrone it, including Nintendo's own attempt with the FDS.

It wasn't until mid to late 91 that things really picked up for the SFC.

The Sega Genesis had a good first year lineup too
>>
>>12263545
And that’s just first party stuff it looks like. Pre-Sonic Genesis is massively underrated.
>>
>>12263613
The list is wrong , revenge of shinobi was released in december 1989 ,the Megadrive in october 1988

NDS is fascinating. in the real world no one gives a shit about any of this garbage however.

Rayman 1 is really better than Mario world tough
>>
>>12263756
I had KF2 back in the 90s. I saw it as a funny guilty pleasure game and nothing more. You only list it because of From's rise to fame since Souls. You know that
