What do I need to know to design a platformer as well as Tezuka designed Super Mario Bros 3? I have way more tools than him, but I feel extremely outmatched. What does he know about fun that I don't?
>>12262956>What does he know about fun that I don't?One of the biggest problems with modern game design is that modern developers are inspired by video games they've playedBoomer game devs who created and defined genres were inspired by real life (observing shit IRL, playing around outside, etc), which leads to a completely different thought process when it coming up with stuff

>>12262965there is a lot of truth to this
>>12262956Well he had other people (in person) to help and give immediate feedback for one
>>12262956You see there this ONE THING you need to do/not do *youtube thumbnail with an arrow pointing at something*
This was still when they were a shady toy company that found a tech cash cow. They were hiring and teaching designers as if they were making toys, not vidya.
>>12262965>modern developers are inspired by video games they've playedUhh they didn't actually play them they watched YouTubers play them. Same reason you see all these wannabe movie games.

SMB3's greatest strength is its pacing. At least until world 7.
make a racing game instead, they're actually fun and aren't embarrassing to admit you play
>>12262956You have to do seemingly simple, obvious, thematic things, like "It is a desert level so I will make a pyramid out of bricks", but then make it interesting enough that it becomes something more. But the main thing is to be aware of the player's mind as they go through the level and to keep giving them little surprises as they go.
>>12262956Design a level with a theme. Play it. Is it fun? Good, keep going. Is it boring or blant? Find a way to make it fun. If it ain't fun, why bother.
>>12262956Check out the book Revere Design: Super Mario World. I was trying to do a Montezumas's Revenge clone a few years ago but this book's content might be more relevant to you.>>12262965I want to say that jaywalking across a wide street can feel like a video game challenge (and not just like Frogger, but in general) whenever cars do some "goofy" stuff and leave you stranded on the middle island.
