I only managed to hack the intro and a few menus so far.The game menus and gameplay-related text (items, spells, ranks...) are located in an executable file that will be tricky to alter. It's pretty cramped in there.As for the story dialogs, the game has a file for each zone. A zone has a lot of information, like what map file to use, what tileset, what character sprites and, more importantly for us, the scripts to play. So far, I've listed all commands used by the script engine and still trying to figure out how the zone files work.

Writing tools is the hardest part for me, and I still have to figure out the zone/script files. The script extraction will take me a bit of time because of this. Anyway, it's nice of Falcom to release a game that runs on low-end PCs even in 1996. And the tile art is really good.

>>12270191Translation Anon from the other month here. I've completed a first English draft of the script I was working on. Some things to point out about that.- I used "英雄伝説IV初期版ゲームシナリオ原本" as the source for the text. This is a book that came with the Red Package edition for the Windows version/remake and contains the unedited script from the *early development stages* of the original PC-98 version of the game. This means that there are some plot points, scenarios and system designs that were not implemented or were later modified in the retail PC-98 version. While the collection claims to be an "unmodified complete version", turns out not all the scripts are present. Specifically, the open scenarios only cover the Guilds in Phildin and Guia, omitting commission events for all other locations (likely because including everything would have far exceeded the book's 400-page limit). Fortunately, the main story remains largely intact; despite minor additions and deletions compared to the retail version, it is largely consistent, so a decent amount of it can still be used for translating the game.- The last third of the book's contents lists some revised scripts, with content that is relatively closer to the retail version. Pic related is the revised ending text; the earlier text was the same except for the underlined words.- Most of the scenario manuscript is organized by town and location rather than chronology. The dialogue of town NPCs at different stages of the story is grouped into a single chapter; for example, the starting village chapter (ED4-4.TXT and ED4-5.TXT) includes not only NPC dialogue from before departure but also the dialogue from the second part of the game.>>12271787The game looks very pretty and the combat is also an improvement over PC-98 White Witch, but man, it's a shame the game got rushed.
