It revolutionized video games.

But how?
>>

This was the first game that actually looked like real life. The textures were just incredible.
>>
Raising the Bar reprint when?
>>

This. When I first played half life 2 I thought it was real. I thought they had a real camera and took pictures for every possible combination of actions I could do. The tetris effect was so real. I held a stick like a crowbar and tried to run around hunting combine. I one picked up a radio like Gordon and threw it and I watched it fall and break and I thought about the game I thought the tech in the game was real. I wanted to study physics so I could do that stuff.

Kind of sad games still have not meaningfully evolved past this game. That’s why we play retro: more variety.

No but this did. For better or worse
>>

the thing that stands out about it to me is being a linear cinematic game designed entirely around pc with consoles as a distant after thought. it has a freeform elegance to it you didn't see in most of its imitators.

art style > realism

this game would have been completely forgettable if it wasnt for the extremely mod friendly community that valve had already established with goldsrc

Absolutely ridiculous. HL2 was mind blowing on release and still stands the rest of time.
>>
Far Cry came out in spring of 2004. HL2 in November was not that revolutionary.
>>
>>12271654
xbox port was unplayable when consoles were at their peak, if you didnt have an expensive computer when this game launched it was irrelevant. i myself did not get to play half life 2 until the orange box released on 360 and the episodes put the halfassed campaign of 2 to shame.
>>
>>12271663
of the big 3 FPS games that came out in 2004: HL2 was the best one. Good but not great
>>
>>12271667
I played HL2 in 2005 on a mid ass PC and it looked amazing and ran great. It's an insanely well optimized game.

>the episodes put the halfassed campaign of 2 to shame.
I hear this often but I can't agree. Episode 2 in particular focuses on the worst weaknesses of HL2's campaign. Tight spaces work great, big open areas don't.

My mind was very much not blown on release

Please tell me exactly what it "revolutionized". I'll wait
>inb4 muh physics
Physics aren't gameplay, the fixation with physics in 2000s games aged like milk
>>

it is really well optimized, but xbox is a broken port and a computer to play it in 2004 would have cost a thousand dollars easily. i bought a og xbox in 2005 for like $50 and then a 360 to play halo (HD mind you) for about $350, when my $700 laptop i bought in 2007 still couldnt play hl2. mods saved this game.

>big open areas dont
i agree and i usually skip the strider battle, but the episodes actually turn the mess of hl2 into a cohesive story that people gave a shit about. if you just slapped the cd in your drive for the first time after playing half life and didnt have a menu telling you what the game was, you'd have a hard time figuring out this was a sequel, and gabe confirmed that development was a directionless mess and they slapped the half life franchise name on it haphazardly for marketing, it really shows. releasing source sdk after supporting all the goldsrc mods saved this game from being obscure indie cult shit. there are more quality source mods released every year than triple a tittles

It uses Havok, but the retarded fanboys credit Valve instead. You know... the typical brainless fanboy behavior
Some notable games using the same physics engine: Age of Empires 3, TimeSplitters: Future Perfect, Destroy All Humans, FEAR, Painkiller, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, 50 Cent: Bulletproof (lol)

Meanwhile Black, a 2006 by Criterion
>has enviromental destruction that inspired Battlefield Bad Company
>has the kino + gunporn gameplay that inspired Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare

Fanboys retardation aside, HL2 is a 5/10 game.
