What went so fucking wrong?
>>
gameplay progresses way slower with a third dimension. ninja rope is trash. not being able to see worm locations at a glance sucks ass. that's just off the top of my head

Genuinely 4 mayhem is my favorite Worm game, 3d felt more janky

If you want a 3D Worms game that's actually good play Hogs of War

remember playing this as a kid, good times

nothing.
people just got filtered and other games were more popular at the time.
>>
what was a third dimension supposed to add to this series?

Mayhem happened - all it did was adding hats and gloves while not improving on 3D's base
Custom weapon sounds cool in theory but on pratice you couldn't make an actually fun weapon because you went over the limit, so the best thing you could do was either a copy of existing weapon or a weapon that destroys a ton of terrain but deals 0 damage.
Story mode sucked ass.
Aesthetics were worse than in 3D.
At least Forts actually tried to experiment with the genre, and while it was too rough over the edges it was a neat concept that could benefit a lot from polishing and QoL in the sequel - sadly, Team 17 didn't even try to make one.
As for Worms 3D - it was good for its time, it was fun and I still replay it from time to time when I get some free time. It just needed a proper sequel and not whatever Team 17 kept releasing beyond Forts - "hey, let's copypaste the same Worms as before but with less content, add a new meme gimmick and then sell it as a new game!".
I did not like magnets in Open Warfare
I did not like water and class roles (a thing that existed since WWP as one of possible custom conditions btw) in Revolution
I did not like artillery and "house" gimmick in W.M.D.
Those games didn't try enough to feel different from Armageddon and WWP, they just slapped a gimmick on themselves and called it a day.
Blast was a good concept, Forts was a good concept, Rumble was ehhh. Team 17 need to try other genre concepts with Worms because 2 out of 3 isn't so bad. Or go back to 3D and try one more time.

I'd like a rerelease of this.

Decomp incoming

I enjoyed the first 3d one. It was novel at the time.

90% of the time the most optimal way to play is to just knock enemy Worms into water, making the game ridiculously repetitive and predictable.
