There's no reason for a save file to take more than 300KB.
>>
The blocks of memory were the maximum single save file size so you would never run out of space while playing. Some games included slots for multiple games into the space needed for this single save, like the Jak games, which bloated their filesizes to over 2,000kb. Diablo on PS1 takes up 2/3 of your save blocks.

Gran Turismo 4 and The Sims 2 are games that I remember having large save files.
GT4 is a huge game, so many variables. Understandable.
>>
If the game could create a reverse-hash from your garage and car tuning setups then you probably could have a very small save file.
>>
>>12271441
Jak and GT should not need very large files. Jak should just be flags for game progression and items. GT is times for tracks and a table for owned cars + upgrades.

Diablo at least has an excuse for remembering floors, their exploration and what barrels and monsters have been destroyed. D2 later decided to respawn everything on each game load.
>>

>so many variables
text.
with some clever thinking you can store the biggest modern games save data in under a kilobyte
>>
it had some weird fucky save protection because they feared people sharing saves or something. I wonder if that contributed to the bloat.
>>
>>12271432
how big was this? the biggest one for me I think was Fatal Frame 1 (EU version). I think it 1.8MB, fucking christ. It sucks because I love that game so I couldn't delete it
>>
>>12271680
>they feared people sharing saves or something
There's literally a save transfer option in-game?
>>
>>12271701
Ok maybe it wasn't for sharing but to prevent piracy or something idk. I remember that if the previous save was a mismatch of the new one, it wouldn't save your game unless you wiped your entire garage
>>
I started playing Gran Turismo 4 and I absolutely see the appeal with all the cars and car autism but it also feels like I really need a wheel to enjoy it fully. The driving's too realistic for a controller to feel fun. Also these license tests are retarded
>>
>>12271713
>The driving's too realistic for a controller to feel fun
lol no
>>
>>12271701
Yes. In game. Very controlled. They were trying to enforce an ironman sort of system and prevent exploits like car duplication. Very anti-fun perhaps but then again the japanese get very autistic about making sure all fun remains according to script.
>>
There definitely were some games that had file save sizes way bigger than they needed to be. Good example is Turok 2, took 90 pages (approx 23kb) of 123 pages. The game only had a few save stations per level. There's no way they needed that many flags for every single object and interaction. My guess is it was simply quicker than having sectional flags or something more dynamic.
>>
>>12271713
>The driving's too realistic
Just wait until you play an actual sim
>>
There's no reason for a save file to take more than 60 bytes.
>>
>>12271713
I find the old Gran Turismos unnerving to play because its analog steering in controllers is always fucked. On top of massive dead zones in every game except 3, the analog curve is not linear and makes it so that the car won't really start turning well until you have the stick pressed to 75% to the side. It's either too little or too much. Coming from other racers make it feel so awkward every time. They just play better with D-Pad provided you don't have a wheel, so try that to skip the adaptation to the weird analog levels the games have.
>>
>>12271687
delete it. do it for me.
>>
>>12271713
>The driving's too realistic for a controller to feel fun
No lol. It's basically an arcade racer with a tiny bit sim sprinkled in.
Here's a tip: If you find cornering too difficult because the car won't turn at all or just handles weird as fuck, deactivate the over- and understeering aid. For some reason those completely fuck up the car's handling and make the car not behave like you would expect it at all because they push the car into a straight line waaaay to hard.
>>
>>12271771
actual sims are easier because the cars actually have traction and can turn
>>
People sure do love accusing sims of being unrealistic like it's the easiest thing in the world. Yes, GT4 is realistic. Show us actual mathematics if you think you know better. Show us your degree in physics. Be specific in anything at all.
>>
"realistic" racing sims make things harder that they are in reality.
>>
>>12272551
Not really, it's just that irl you have more feedback from the car obviously, not to mention, fear
>>
>>12271432
I mean in GT4 you could get hundreds of cars. Each with custom everything.

You think 2000KB is bad? Ruff Trigger takes 110MB! You need 14 memory cards to hold all that! Or maybe it's just a typo. But that's not as fun.

You can have hundreds of cars. Each can have mods, mileage, and hundreds of variables like custom gear ratios, spring rebound, brake bias, and differential lockup rates. Then it saves all your times and maybe even ghost replays (don't recall).
The block has to be big enough to fit a full save file.
>>
>>12271687

What the fuck
>>
>>12272531
How can GT4 be realistic if literally every other sim better than GT4 drive nothing like GT4
>>

>wheel on a console racer
gave me a good laugh
>>
>>12271687
Never played any Fatal Frame game, but I know they involve a camera. Does it let you save the photos you take? If so, that'd easily balloon up the save file size. Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX 2 lets you save photos and it has a big save size too (don't remember exactly what), though they had the decency to make the photo save file separate from the much smaller progress save file, so you don't have to waste all that space if you don't want to.

You haven't lived until you've played Starsky & Hutch with a wheel and a lightgun, preferably with a buddy.

You should
>>
>>12272676
They do. 2 and 3 have the album data separate from the save data but I assume 1 has them together.
>>
>>12272668
Be more specific.
>>
>>12272895
It's common sense. If you claim that GT4's driving feels real, then how can literally any other driving simulator drive nothing like GT4? Let alone in the same series GT7 feels nothing like GT4.

>modern sims are more accurate than old sims
>gt physics got better over time
Yes and? Still doesn't change that gt4 physics were decently realistic for the time, especially compares to arcade shit

The best driving wheels for decades were made for new GT releases. First force feedback and 720 degree wheels were designed specifically for GT and it's featureset kid.
>>
>>12273247
Considering the nature of the game this is forgivable.
