>initially was developed to be a 2.5D game with gameplay similar to Crash Bandicoot>was originally going to be a fast-paced, proper platforming experience with kong-switching and projectile gun mechanics >18 months into development it got rehauled into being yet another cookie-cutter 3d collectathon with a coat of DK intellectual-property paint>game turns out to be no different than a hypothetical Banjo-Threeie >dev team says its because a DKC styled game "wasn't feasible"Just.. why? And do you honestly buy their reasoning? From a programming standpoint, I just don't see in what world a 2.5D game would be harder to develop than a 3D one.
>>12271634im glad they decided to make it into a good game instead of going with the original shitty idea. too many developers make the mistake of thinking their initial ideas are production ready
>>12271634I appreciate they made a 3D platformer too, it's rare there's a clear and decisive point of decline in a genre one can point to but DK64 is exactly it. The game is horrendous but having such a monumental title be the point in which a genre officially wore out its welcome makes it easy to track why the genre fizzled out within a generation.
>>12271634So Crash Bandicoot but with Donkey Dong?
>>12271634who the fuck wanted a 2.5d DK64 lmao
>>12271634>mascotslop >toddlerslop >best game of all timeHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
>>12271634So, it was going to be DKC returnsDKC returns wasn't the best game of all time, so I'm not sure this would've been too different.Consider DKC3 also. There's already a common sentiment that it's not as good as 2, so imagine the mindset that went into that game, but with n64 graphics. It wouldn't have been all that great. I can imagine a game like that being called the worst game in the series, even. Though if it was still 2D, like Yoshi's Story or Troublemakers, that would've been a different story. But the truth is that the DK64 we got, at the time felt huge and impressive and the sort of thing we could only see on the n64
