I'm really loving this game, it's a shame the Turtles got relegated to the beat 'em up gang because this is a fun adventure. It's really captured my imagination. It is crazy hard, though. I'm using the save slot provided in the Cowabunga Collection and I can't even imagine playing through this game normally. If anyone beat this game the regular way back in '89 I'd like to shake that person's hand.

It's massively underrated. It has some 8-bit bullshit but no less than a lot of beloved games for the platform. I think it's poor reputation lies with the fact that it isn't as "crowd pleasing" as the beat-em-ups and the fact it was one of the first AVGN episodes. OK the swimming level is sort of bullshit but I could beat it when I was 6...it's not THAT hard.

Anyone who got filtered on the dam is pants on head retarded, the real filter was getting across the rooftops.

I was 6 and I was only able to beat the dam once. But when I did that one time, it felt incredible.

if you stack the scrolls in the first level youll have a great advantage for the rest of the game. I did that incidentally and it helped me beat the bosses with ease.

I got to the final battle back then, once. I had to come back as an adult to finally finish the game. It's not as hard as Battletoads or anything but yeah it's a somewhat tough game. And yeah it's good. Keep trying, it doesn't stop being cool. Shredder has some really bizarre minions in this game.

It's amusing how this (whether real human or not) assumes the release year is all that mattered because that's how things are for video games today. My family bought the NES+TMNT bundle I must have been around 5 years old so around 1993.
Anyway, I'd post usenets posts of people beating the game way back in '89 but you can't sage with a picture.

The dam is hard when you're a little kid and haven't been playing vidya for 10 years. You either get freaked out by the timer and take too much damage on the electric barriers, or go too slow and run out of time. Once you figure it out it's not hard at all.
>>
How to beat TMNT:
Level 1: Just rush to the boss and finish it, if this is hard you have no hope of beating the game.
Level 2: Get gud at the dam itself, specifically the exit to the pizza. Use this area to refill everyone to full health before you dive in. Then git gud at clearing the bombs quickly. Remember to change turtles partway through the pain-zone(or when at low health), and avoid the seaweed pits since they will reach out to pull you down to insta-death.
Level 3: Use the building near the start to refill back to full health, and stockpile missiles. Use missiles to fight your way to lower left corner of map. Sewers connecting buildings down here have both a pizza spawn and a scrolls spawn. Stockpile scrolls on everyone, prioritize Ralph, Mike, Leo, then Don. Go grab some rope and then head for the upper right corner of the map. Make sure everyone is at full health, no easy pizza beyond this point. There's a jump down in the sewers where you will fall in the water if you hit your head on the ceiling, it's the only jump in the game you need to worry about that mechanic. Use scrolls to smash boss fast.
Level 4: Giant maze full of enemies and laser guns, scrolls will help you keep the screen clear of threats. Rush to boss, stand under as Don and attack upwards.
Level 5: Get underground and find the Technodrome fast. Don't bother with above ground and buildings, it's all a nightmare. Just get underground and find a room to see if the Technodrome is there. If not, rush to the next room. Scroll smash boss.
Level 6: Use your scrolls to minimize damage and make your way to Shredder. The hallway prior to the miniboss fight before Shredder is a filter. Once you see a jetpack guy, immediately crouch and freeze until they fly backwards and de-spawn themselves. Otherwise you won't make it to the other side. As for Shredder, watch out for his instant-kill de-mutator gun.

Yeah. You either have to come in with enough health to tank them or know that you can trick them into flying away by crouching. At least the final boss is easy.

I don't mind most of this game, the end just isn't that fun to play.

Radical Rescue is the better non-beat 'em up TMNT game.

>>12275356
Grinding to stack items in hard games is a thing a lot of people have forgotten about. A lot of people me beat hard games like Ninja Gaigen by tediously grinding 1-ups.

I made myself a romhack that changes the scrolling point so the scrolling occurs when the turtle is at around 60-65% into the screen (35-40% when going left) instead of 70-80% like in the original, and that gives JUST enough time to throw two shurikens at the jetpack dudes before they bump into you.
>>
>>12277782
you didn't beat the game

No.
He improved it.
>>
>>12277782
You just have to crouch and they'll scroll offscreen. No need to reinvent the wheel here!
>>
>>12277957
That's subjective. Objectively, he cheated and didn't beat the game.
>>
In retrospect I really just got through most Nintendo games by brute force memorization. I could reliably get past the infamous water level but after that it became a maze and I could never figure it out before losing a my turtles.
But yes. There I wish most IPs didn’t get stuck in a singular genre. Would love a turtles rpg, but I guess it at least got a fighter.
>>
>>12279650
It got a turtlevania on the gameboy that puts the wimpy Metroid II to shame
>>

Irrelevant either way.

You didn't beat the game. Just come clean.

Radical Rescue? That's one my G.O.A.T. games. It's honestly really good but I hate the term "metroidvania", I'm sure there's a better way to describe these games
>>
>>12280732
I'm not that anon.
I'm merely pointing out the objective fact that your post is redundant and unnecessary, just like your life.
>>
>>12280864
>I hate the term "metroidvania", I'm sure there's a better way to describe these games

It doesn't even make sense to describe any game but a Castlevania game that way. It's a term made specifically to refer to a Castlevania game that's more like a Metroid game than the classic series. It's not like they share credit for creating that type of game, Castlevania just lifted it completely. Just call them metroidlikes or something.
>>
>>12280864
I didn't say "metroidvania" you illiterate inbred I said "turtlevania"

>It doesn't even make sense to describe any game but a Castlevania game that way.
-vania is a distinctive and good-sounding suffix (much better than "x-like").
And in my experience refers primarily to a melee-centric and fantasy focus rather than shooting and science fiction (or mariolike or puzzle-platforming).

Over half the garbage in your pic is not retro. No Wario Land 3? What about Blaster Master, Ufouria, Below the Root? Don't post shit from your /v/ folder here ever again.

I could pretty consistently get through the dam and I wasn't particularly good at games as I often died on the level after that.

were the enemies from the comics? the guy on fire? the guy with a chainsaw? the guy with the detachable fly head? the guy that turns into smaller guys when hit?
>>
>>12281245
That's the consequence for bitching about practical, convenient and commonly used terminology.
>>
>>12281276
I don't REALLY care but I think it's more worthwhile to keep the original idea behind the term alive than your weak attempt at justifying something that's obviously just an example of enough people using a term incorrectly that it became correct.
