>Try to keep things /vr/ related: Focus should be on 6th Gen Consoles and older. Slight off topic is fine so long as it's related to CRTs, such as later 16:9 models, HD models, etc. Systems with backwards compatibility are also safe territory, as are re-releases on newer hardware. PC CRTs are also welcome and appreciated.
>Produce OC! Bust out your camera and take photos of your CRTs displaying all sorts of games, featuring all sorts of tubes, using all sorts of signals. Getting good shots can be hard, but if you take enough, at least a few will turn out alright.
>Try and give as much information as possible when asking for info on a specific set, or troubleshooting an issue to expedite and help you may receive. As always, Google is your friend and we are your friends with benefits. Do people read this? Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either; Seriously, there's literally 6 years of backlog at this point.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. Always remember to show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Limited discussion of video processing and scaling devices is alright, but remember to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories.

You can emulate on a CRT.

I technically emulated games like Chrono Trigger and Snatcher on my softmodded Wii, which I was then able to output in 240p to my 27" Trinitron CRT. If it wasn't for my Wii then I would have probably ended up emulating those games on my PC like some third-world cuck.

The cool thing about using the Wii is that you can plug a Classic or Pro controller into the Wiimote to play the games more comfortably. You can even plug the NES Mini and SNES Mini controllers into them too since they used that same connector.

Recently, I went to a retro gaming convention in my city. It had been at least two decades since I'd seen a game on a CRT TV. My God... how can you guys play games looking at a screen with so much visual degradation and artifacts? My eyes couldn't stand looking at it for more than 5 minutes without tearing up. My vision even become fucked up for a while after I stopped playing.

Not true, emulating means playing windowed on a laptop keyboard-only using a poorly coded N64 emulator and xBR filter while abusing savestates.
That's what emulation means, or at least it's what I tell myself after I bought a 499$ dollar CRT, a 200$ console and 150$ for loose games.

One retard near has been trying to sell a beaten-up 36 inch wega with extremely shitty geometry and scratched up screen for 500 for two years now. He's never lowered the price but occasionally edits the description.

Probably had sharpness turned up too high on a tv with rf/composite with a shitty or non-existent comb filter with contrast cranked up way too high.

Yeah, those are lost causes, forget about it, if nothing shows up near at a real fair price or as a giveaway that hasnt been snitched by some hipster hoarder parasite, welp, might as well just switch to emulation and shaders, or go to a near town or city and look up and ask to locals who dont seem to be into being phonesuckers.

I scooped up a free 20" Polaroid TTX-2000AR off Craigslist from an old dude that said he bought it for his mom two decades ago but she never wanted it, so it had been sitting sealed in its original packaging since it rolled off the assembly line in 2004, Styrofoam and everything. Quality-wise it's just Chinesium and certainly no Trinitron, but finding a brand-new CRT in 2025 with zero hours is pretty crazy

I would have preferred a TV with component for 6th Gen/Wii gaming, but all of the resellers on Craigslist/FB Marketplace near me want $200+ for their "ebin RARE retro gaming CRTs". S-Video still looks pretty good on most early 2000s games, so I can't complain with something I spent nothing on apart from the gas to pick it up

The e-waste facility I used to frequent lost their government contract a year or two ago, and now some religious-type organisation runs the place. The prices are outrageous, even something as simple as a second-hand Xbox 360 AV Cable by itself will be marked as $10 AUD. I used to buy all sorts of retro gaming stuff there for relatively cheap, even got my mint condition 21" ViewSonic CRT PC Monitor there for only $20 about 5 years ago. The new people would probably charge $100+. But even so I have noticed there's nowhere near as much retro gaming stuff being donated as there was 5 to 10 years ago.
>>
>>12278709
In a way; I agree. I used to scoff at prices for most retro gaming type hardware and software not that long ago, but nowadays I would gladly buy some of it at those prices. It's better just to buy it now and get it over with, if you can afford it of course.

Resolution wise, it benefitted from being one of the later CRT monitors to be released (2003) before LCDs took over. It was a standard home/office monitor. I have no complaints but there's better out there.

I am finally getting around to setting up my CRT (A Goldstar CB 20A90 I pulled from the trash) since I have a Ratchet and Clank marathon comming up with a friend. But along with the PS2 (it's a slim model) I was hoping to put up a VHS player along with it, problem being the TV only has a single SCART port.

Would pic related work? I am not too familiar with analogue to know what exactly the description means. "Pro SCART to composite video and S-Video adapter IN/OUT with SCART passthrough", made by Goobay.

And we don't cling to that unlike you fucks with your dogshit image quality. Anyway, what anon tried to say is that there was no need for S-Video in Europe, since S-Video in America is composite without dot crawl, a thing that wasn't an issue on PAL. Composite on Euro TVs is what your S-Video looked like.
>>
>>12291402
Dunno about the MX1500 but on the later sets you need to hit 'confirm' or 'save' or something to that effect on the remote to save the settings.
>>
>>12292010
Why fuck around with S-Video when every single euro tv has access to RGB?
>>

Why would composite on PAL not have had dot crawl? Wikipedia says it has it but it calls it "chroma dots" instead. What's the difference?

>>

>>
>>12292103

>>
>>12292040
Yeah, with Beolink 1000, the picture and sound settings are confirmed by pressing the 'picture' or 'sound' button again, but even then it does not save them, even though the TV detects the commands by flashing a light
>>
Finally decided to bite the bullet and buy a mux mod to get RGB out of 32" trinitron that's been in my family since I was a kid. Should probably recap the boards too since I'll be messing around back there anyway.

One annoyance I realized after the fact is that the auto-switching aspect of the mux mod won't work because it relies on a 5V signal coming from the consoles. But when I made all my own SCART cables back in the day, I never bothered wiring up that line because everything was going to BNC breakout cables and routing through an extron to my PVM anyway. So I guess I'll need to source 5V from somewhere on the CRT board and also install a manual push switch. Oh well.
>>
>>12292013
>Anyway, what anon tried to say is that there was no need for S-Video in Europe, since S-Video in America is composite without dot crawl [...]

This is complete moonspeak to me, but i probably should have mentioned I am from Europe. Anyway, if I am reading this right, SCART and AV *should* be the same video quality on my CRT?

No, composite is still blurrier, it just won't look as shitty as NTSC composite which adds a ton of artifacts and problems specific of that video standard. S-Video is blurrier than RGB also.

SCART is simply a connector
through scart you can get
Composite
AUDIO LEFT/RIGHT
S-Video
RGB

If you have a tv with 1 Scart port, that port is 99% wired for Composite and RGB. Do yourself a favor and just a RGB cable.
If you do so, it doesn't matter if you have a low end television that doesn't have a NTSC color crystal. You will get color with the RGB cable.

Less artifacting, fringing, color bleed, etc. PAL is just more color faithful. As I said, there was no need for S-Video here because S-Video was born to solve problems the PAL video standard didn't have.

On my ME6000 it only saves it if I hit a different button, I think it's either store or play but I use a generic remote because my beolink 1000 is dead. If I exit the menu by pressing the same button I used to get into it the settings stay but aren't saved. Try exiting the menu by using either of those buttons.

50hz tho kek
>>
>>12292560
That has nothing to do with the CRTs. PAL CRTs are able to display 60hz unless it's some weird Telefunken from the 80s. You will never restore your foreskin.
>>
>>12292558
You are correct. I remembered wrong. According to the instructions, to save, you have to press the 'store' button, which is between the 'picture' and 'sound' buttons. Nevertheless, it doesn't work.
>>
>>12292552
That doesn't really make sense. PAL composite is still chroma and luma information combined. It's not magically as good as s-video. The reason euros don't have s-video is because they already had RGB

I got this Sony Profeel KX-27PS1 recently and I have a problem with the RGB SCART input. For some reason it accepts only CSYNC, other sync types (CVBS/luma) don't seem to work (I can see the picture but it's out of sync and rolls all over the screen in both axes, fiddling with the VHOLD knob doesn't help much).
I've read about this a bit on the net and people mention that this model specifically doesn't like CSYNC and you should use sync-on-luma or sync-on-composite, but mine behaves exactly the other way around. Moreover, when I connect a CSYNC cable through a fully passive SCART switch (even with nothing else connected), it doesn't sync either. At first I thought the sync/CVBS pin on the SCART connector was loose and have already reflowed it and the soldering point that it goes directly to on the other side of the input board, but that wasn't it.
Could this be some impedance issue? Composite over BNC works, so I guess it extracts sync properly, the problem has to be somewhere before the input switch (that also works, it switches automatically to the SCART input if the signal is there). When looking at the service manual I've noticed that the only things between the input board and the switch are separate buffers for all VIDEO IN signals. My guess is that something in that circuit has gone bad, but I thought I'd ask here before diving in again to check all the components in there.
Also haven't tried the RGB FDD connector input as I don't have a cable for it yet.

What type of SCART does it use?
Euro SCART or that weird Japanese 21pin scart? If I recall right the JP21Pin stuff is wired differently.
Anyway assuming its EURO SCART, I don't know much about JP21pin. On the SCART cable from the passive switch to the end that goes into the television. Try disabling PIN8 and then switch to A/V mode manually and start the console see what happens.

It's Euro SCART. By the way, technically it's a monitor, not a TV because it has no built-in tuner, it's a separate box (that I don't have on me right now).
There are no controls for choosing an input on the monitor itself, it defaults to composite/BNC, when you turn on a console that's connected via SCART (applying voltage on pin 8) it switches to that and you can't go back to BNC until you turn the console off. The remote (that's both for the monitor and tuner) has a VIDEO button, but it doesn't seem to do anything for the monitor. The tuner has some additional composite inputs, so I guess it's meant for switching to them, together with the numeric buttons for TV.
The problem seems to be with sync specifically, or the whole path from pin 20 to input switch. Weird because sync-on-composite is standard for RGB SCART, so it should surely support that. Also I've tested both PAL and NTSC signals, the vertical frequency doesn't matter, also both work fine over composite.

It's a 32XBR70, around 230 lbs. Keep in mind the wood cabinet is part of it. Thought about claiming it but nah, not worth it.
>>
>>12292591
Possibly because PAL uses a higher frequency color carrier. Whatever the reason, NTSC is significantly worse. I remember back in the day when I tried 60hz mode on my PS2, it looked so bad I switched back immediately.
>>
>>12293846
Sounds like an issue with how your TV handled 60hz or NTSC. There's no reason PAL composite would look better outside of higher resolution which games didn't take advantage of often.
>>
>>12293980
PAL composite often looks better then NTSC due to bleeding issues

Just plugged in an Amiga 1080 monitor I got from a garage sale.
There was a loud pop, followed by a few seconds of normal CRT hum, but no picture before it went silent.
Power cycling it resulted in a few more seconds of hum before it went silent again.

I'm thinking an input or safety cap in the PSU probably died, but I probably won't be able to give it a good look until this weekend.
Hopefully it's salvageable. What do you anons think?

I’ve looked up some guides on how to do that manually. These are the options I have for display. Any advice as how to place them or is it too tv specific?
>>
>>12295767
Very, it just has some tape on the edges as the place I bought it from had some signs taped onto it for display. Went to an ax throwing place on New Year’s Eve with family and they had it hooked up front with Mario kart 64 running. On the way out I offered the guy 50 bucks for it, I was willing to go up to 100, and he agreed so I took it on the spot. I have a few other tube TVs, but always wanted one much smaller like this that’s portable and easy to move around.
>>
>>12297435
something like 240p test suite will help you get the sharpness, brightness, and contrast to perfect levels. But just going by eye you want to turn brightness (black level) up until solid blacks are just a tick away from no longer being solid black. Contrast (white level) you want to start high then turn it down until there is no noticeable distortion and it's not blinding you. Sharpness is different by some sets. Try 0 and if that looks blurry turn it up but not so high that you get sharpness artifacts. Kinda hard to judge sharpness on n64 since it's known for being a little blurry.

If those numbers go 0-100 I would probably start them at 50 and adjust from there except sharpness which should be much lower. Color temp was usually expected to be warm for US media but cool for Japanese. I prefer how cool temp looks in general.

>Produce OC!
here's my setup:
>some old Kendo brand CRT TV we owned since forever
>HP Z240 SFF box (dirt cheap while supporting Xeons with ECC and Intel ME, doubles as a stand too)
>low-profile 750Ti to fit in SFF box
>soldered VGA to SCART passive adapter
>Gentoo loaded with Retroarch
Nvidia Maxwell (which includes 750Ti) is the last Nvidia generation that has native analogue signaling (Pascal and later might still have VGA ports, but those are wired internally to DP->VGA converters).
It can drive any 15KHz TV resolution directly (even 240p, no minimum dotclock requirement like with Intel iGPUs or some DP->VGA adapters, so no superresolution needed), switches resolutions instantly (important for menus in PSX games etc.), no conversion or buffering in-between, perfect for CRT TV.
I can certainly recommend going for Maxwell GPU. I had too many issues with Intel iGPUs or DP to VGA adapters (minimum dotclocks, no 5V on pin 9, couldn't switch modelines unless display was connected, dogshit slow resolution switching etc.).
If 750Ti is too weak for your usecase (somehow?), 980Ti is still Maxwell so it should work as well (passive DVI -> VGA -> SCART).
VGA -> SCART adapter is easy to solder as RGB color signals are compatible (what matters is if your GPU can drive those RGB lines with 15KHz TV timings), it's all passive components, add two 3V coin batteries on top of 5V from VGA to switch the TV to 4:3 mode automatically, add an audio jack as well to drive your TV speakers.
