>>
I just replayed it, and I agree: it has a terrible design, though old fags in their 50s will get defensive if you bring it up. It took me 50 hours to beat. Back in the day, it was common to talk about games during recess, often sharing nonsense like how to get the Song of Sages to melt Zora’s Domain ice as part of a Triforce quest, just like the Biggoron Sword. Sometimes, though, someone had a Nintendo Power issue with a small guide or the Prima guidebook. As a kid, I got stuck looking for the Eye of Truth, thankfully, a neighbor’s cousin visiting knew where it was. By today’s standards, it’s awful and lame, but back then, that cryptic design was balanced out by the social aspect of being a ’90s kid.

this shows you're autistic. the first thing you'd do is show it to dad.
the game is full of clues in the dialog that you arent reading, another sign of autism
>>
You just had to be there. You would figure out what to do through word of mouth on the playground. Usually 1 kid had the strategy guide. The 1 game you got per year was supposed to last so no one cared how cryptic stuff was
>>
>>12275807
I wasn't beating whole games at 3 years old, but yeah I played Mario and Duck Hunt and Tetris with my family at that age and getting a couple levels into each. How is this surprising in any way? You've clearly never spent any amount of time around a 3 year old if you think they're incapable of playing NES games.

Also it was normal to make no progress in a game and put it down for a week. Then you'd see it from a different angle and have a lightbulb moment.

Much of the experience has been lost over time. While many can still enjoy real hardware and FPGA, the social aspect is long gone. The closest thing now is posting here or on forums, but that often leads to insults by Indians instead of meaningful discussions with cultural equals. You can revisit the past, but no one will be there. Discovering old games isn’t the same anymore: playing Pokémon alone can’t compare to playing it with friends, enjoying both RBY and Stadium together. The same goes for arcade games, where you weren’t just watching and learning from others’ gameplay, but also trash-talking and having fun. The social element was crucial back then. I’m not being nostalgic: I loved Q3A and PSO, but a huge part of the 5th gen and earlier has lost so much simply because of the missing social side. It’s unreal how even Ocarina of Time feels affected by it.

>>
>>12275954

>11 of those collectsble skull spider guys
In Kakariko, there's a house where people are suffering from a curse. If you collect Skulltulas, you might be able to break it. Visit the house, and with 10 Skulltulas, you can save one of the six cursed spideyfags. The first one you help will reward you with the Adult Wallet, which lets you carry up to 200 rupees.
>>
>>12276093
The other thing to remember is game rentals were the main way kids got to play games back then. You would get a couple games a year then get to rent games a couple times a month if you were lucky. To prevent this, devs would put alot of cryptic shit in their games to purposely make you hit a wall, buy the game and then buy a guide. I never feel bad about using a guide for 6th gen and under because this was common practice until the handholding of the 7th gen

your rational sane white man words have calmed my rabid angry young man frustration and instead helps me appreciate it as a relic of the time

Is the game a little obtuse? yes, but I am also a different audience than it was intended for, I am not in the same culture that spawned it. my frustrations come from having to be an adult with a job and limited time, and the lack of social institutions for me to meaningfully converse about the game beyond this discussion we are having here

I will remain steadfast and not be filtered. If I need the occasional hint from a guide, so be it.

>after you put something in this bottle
This is what I mean about you being functionally illiterate. You can't even draw a logical connection between the fact that the game says you can put things in bottles and the idea that you might be able to put things in the bottle. When I first played this game, it was just automatic for me to equip an empty bottle and try to put shit in it, so much so that my memory of that text is that the explanation was more explicit than it is. Your problem is that you read words and understand them at the most basic surface level but can't actually divine deeper contextual meaning from any of it. You need to fix that, because reading everything in the game won't help you if you're incapable of synthesizing new information from obvious clues in the text.
>>
>>12276164
What a nonsensical leap of logic. You must be a sad pathetic loner too because you are currently using the internet! Dumbass, if you cant understand what other people are saying dont reply to them youre wasting both of our time.

I played LTTP and LOZ first and when I got a bottle in OOT I had no idea what do with it without a net. I kept looking for a net. Also, 99% of the text in OOT is mindmeltingly tedious and useless, outside of dialogue. I didn't need a tutorial the entire game up to the point of needing bottles at which point yeah, I mashed B to get out of the text fast because I figured it was going to function the same as LTTP.

The game teaches the player to become functionally illiterate and skip text because of how fucking boring it is. I just want to play the game not read a book. This is why when video games went 3D it all fell apart and everything turned into a movie. In original LOZ you just find items and treasure and take it, that's that. In OOT the camera spins around as Link timidly opens the chest unsure of himself and you waste a fucking hour on like, 5 worthless rupees. It's bad game design. All Zeldas got worse, progressively worse, on a linear scale after the first game and OOT is no exception. It's boring and it's ASS. Enjoy your shitty post-modern movie game. There is effectively no difference between OOT and Last of Us or whatever goyslop /v/ is salivating over. N64 isn't retro and shouldn't be allowed on this board.

This thread is interesting because the devs noted that players would naturally experience the game like this while it was in development. Certain people would breeze past certain things because they immediately though to do whatever thing was intended, while others would remain stuck for ages on the same thing, and they had trouble predicting what a given player would actually have problems with. Ultimately, the game is the way is the way it is because they decided to keep in enough stuff that would force the player to engage with the world and explore and interact with it, as opposed to immediately making sure everything would be clearly hinted at. Thankfully there are often multiple solutions to a given problem, where if you've been curious enough you'll stumble upon one of them.

>>12275763
Despite what opposition you're getting, this is a very typical experience of the game, and it was intended as something to slowly take in and explore over time. Don't be concerned about how long it takes, just enjoy the game at whatever pace seems natural to.

You are right about the bottles, someone again might immediately experiment and pick up on what you can do with them, but this really isn't obvious and there are enough things making this not obvious that plenty of people have ended up up stuck in the same situation.

The game peaks when you end up being able to freely time travel, just so you know.

The more interesting thing is that it apparently never once occurred to them that gating everything in a sequence was the real problem. In the original LoZ, there's rarely any one thing you HAVE to do next. There are usually multiple paths of advancement available at any given time.

In LoZ, the first dungeon that requires you to use bombs to open a required path is level 5. This is despite bombable walls being present in every single prior dungeon. And bombs are useful weapons (required to beat the boss of level 2... though again if you can't figure out Dodongo you can just move on and clear every other level except 9, and iirc 7 because I think there are required Dodongos in there).

In OOT the game """requires you to interact with the world """" because the entire game is full of unique mechanics that are just used once for a single obstacle. The primary skill in OOT is being able to guess how the devs implemented some quasi-realistic IN 3D. Which all these silly defensive ocarina babies are calling "observation" and "critical thinking"

It was mind-blowing to n64 kids in 1998, to see spider webs burn away when you lit them on fire with a torch. To zoomers who grew up with minecraft or older people accustomed to games focused on combat and action or serious dungeon crawling and puzzles, Ocarina of Time just feels like doing a bunch of chores in 3DA.

Nobody with good taste thinks jumping off a waterfall into a pool to catch fish swimming around is good gameplay. It's bad gameplay and only defended because it was so many kids' first experience with a 3D world.

nonsense? Medigoron has nothing to do with Biggoron Sword. Medigoron's "sword" is the Giant's Knife and brakes with ease, Biggoron Sword is the unbreakable one.

It's a good thinh they didn't do this and instead gave you a considerable amount of freedom.

No, there's not much freedom at all. Not on anything meaningful to advancement.

Yes sure you have plenty of freedom to roam around the walking simulator discovering minigames and NPCs and other random low quality gameplay. But you can't get into any (child link) dungeon without completing the requisite busywork and its either impossible or highly impractical to do any of them out of order.

>YOU GOTTA TALK TO HER TWICE
Understanding your frustration, but in defense of the past - it very much was an understood part of gaming culture that you talked to NPCs until they start to repeat themselves.
it would be like getting upset that you are "just supposed to know" that left stick is to move, right stick is to look in current gaming. It's the understood culture, so it's barely talked about.
Except today every game has tutorials baked into them.
>>
>>12278208
>But you can't get into any (child link) dungeon
Yes, that's true for child Link (though would be trivial to alter given how bombs are never needed for Jabu), but not at all true for adult Link.

Your problem is that you try to impose this "no game should need a guide" mindset on games from the past that were literally made in such a way that you'd get stuck and need a guide, or a hotline. You are trying to shape the world to this idea that the internet gave you about guides. Just read the guide. Sometimes the idea can't beat reality.
>>
Why do you fags always fall for the easiest bait, god DAMN you're gullible

>>
>>12280486
OoT was not designed to need a guide. That whole idea died out sometime in 4th gen.
>>
>>12280820
It's why every minute or so Navi will go "hey" and remind you what your current mission objective is.
>>
>>12280820
Guides were very prevalent in 5th gen, they just stopped being lucrative because the internet and GameFaqs killed their business model. Not before they tried, though. Some of the most blatantly guide-oriented designs ever are 5th gen (Final Fantasy IX).

Games in 3rd and 4th gen were mostly not designed to need guides either, the idea that they were is 99% zoomer revisionism based on the fact that Nintendo Power existed and there was an aftermarket for tips and guides.
>>
>>12281289
Prevalent? Yes.
Necessary by design? No.
Big difference.

In-game map has a blinking dot for places where the next main story event takes place and if you are on a trading quest (chicken, biggoron sword) there's a red marker over that location.
Navi usually will tell you specifics as someone has pointed out. Or there are NPCs you can talk to.
Not everything obtuse in an old game was to sell guides like everyone says these days, I think that was a rare thing.
>>
>>12275796
Dude that's barely above average. You need to be atleast 200iq to understand Zelda.
>>
>>12275763
I kinda like how its a bit unintuitive, gives it a gritty, obscure feeling. You talk to everyone and you get slight hints but nobody tells you exactly how to do it. You have to break your mind a little bit, experimenting, exploring. I think its good for an adventure game to stump you every once and a while
