probably an objective statement
>>
I'm a PSX supremacist and even I agree.
>>
And much better than the Retard version on GameCube
>>
>fighting game
>>
>>12276862
Smash 64 is funnily enough better balanced than Melee with low tiers having better matchups than the low tiers from Melee if you're playing the NTSC-US version of 64.

I love the sound effects.
>>
>>12276849
Yes it's more original than any other regular fighter but I think Evil Zone is as unique as Smash
>>
>>12276940
>more original than any other "regular" fighter
Dumb statement. If you're only comparing it to standardized fighting games, then it takes very little effort to be "more original".
>>
>>12276959
Pretty easy to say it takes very little effort to be original when you already know what smash is like.
>>
>>12276849
If this game were more popular, it'd probably be on more radars for that title.
>Two games in one
>adult one modeled after the likes of VF/DoA
>Chibi mode that more resembles a fighting game RPG, complete with equipment, consumables, a shop, conditional drops, boss weakness items, unlockable moves, even the ability to manipulate how juggling works entirely.
>And both let you customize multiple elements unique between 2D and 3D fighting games.
There were some others like Fighters' Destiny that used point systems more akin to actual competitions, shit you really don't see much in the genre. It was a pretty cool time despite the amount of games that shit the bed.

It's absolutely amazing to me that this board gets so many newfags that this retards threads keep getting replies.
>>
>>12277693
It's not a bad thread even if it's made by someone shitty, he didn't say anything controversial really

I mean, even in casual play it's just better when a couple or so characters just don't dumpster everything else. People get to pick a character or play style they enjoy without being that handicapped.
>>
>>12277763
Items even it out in casual play, not everyone is a wave dashing autist either, that helps a lot.
>>
>>12277775
Yeah. Sometimes it is item defaults. Other times no item spawns. Other times pokeballs only, max spawns.

I was pretty sheltered as a kid and I went over to some Japanese kid's house once when I was like 11 years old or something and he had a Nintendo 64 in this game and I was so blown away that you had to use up on the joystick to jump. Up till then, I had only passingly played Super Mario Land on a friend's old Game Boy that they had when they let me and various games on the PlayStation 1 And all those games used X or A to jump and stuff like that. It was a total paradigm shift.
>>
>>12277817
>you had to use up on the joystick to jump
You could also press any of the C buttons.

>oh okay *presses up c and only up c*
>>
>>12276849
Honestly, it is. 5th gen didn't have a lot of "original" fighting games in the first place though.
>>12276862
I think Melee is a great game on its own merits. People hate it because of the comp scene, but you don't have to participate in that crap to enjoy it.
>>12277693
It's not every day he starts a thread off with a statement that's actually true.
>>
>>12276862
Agreed the more arcade style gameplay makes it about a million times more fun than any other smash bros game
>>
>>12276935
thank heavens that the punch sfx was improved in the us release
>>
>>12276870
>it's not a fighting game it's a uhhh *makes up a 5 word genre that no other game will ever fit in*
>hah hah see!!!
Your seethe is showing.
>>
>>12280950
To be fair, Melee was kinda what made it be seen as a real fighting game, and I prefer 64 and fighting games both. When 64 came out, it broke most of the conventions that tied the genre together, but laid the groundwork for its sequels and so many derivative games that it kinda became an adaptation of the genre like 2D vs 3D was. Its a fighting game series, but it kinda took a while to get there. The fanbase smelling like rotting meat never helped the argument either.

It certainly wasn’t this turd in the punchbowl
>>
>>12276862
don't kid yourself, at least Melee was made as a total upgrade to 64 beyond only gameplay.
and there wasn't anyone installing cringe character mods to be stuck with the game

>>12279116
What's so non-arcady about it's single player modes though?
>>
>>12281295
It's not an arena fighter It's a weird 3d fighting game and I have never played anything like it before or after.
>>
>>12281290
No idea what you're talking about schizo and not retro.
>>
>>12281324
Melee has worse balancing though.
>inb4: b-b-but my characters!!! my clones!! reeee troon trooooon!!!!
>>
>melee
>literally a perfect sequel
>SOME people prefer 64
Nostalgia? Smash Remix syndrome? I started with 64 and Melee is superior in every way

>>
>>12281596
We always called Mario Kart 64 a fighting game though
>>
>>12281459
Better sound effects in 64. Broken combos are funny, and most of the roster is viable. Also Melee doesn't have Board the Platforms.
>>
>>12284012
>most of the roster is viable
>>the first game infested by a meta destroying yellow rat
