Powerslave is a completely different game on PC and consoles and I've heard that the console versions are much better. I wanted to try the Sega Saturn Powerslave, but I was wondering if the remaster is a much better option?

The secret to using YouTube thumbnails is to replace the hq720.jpg with maxresdefault.jpg

This is a google search image for Powerslave that I thought would be appropriate for the thread jfc

Remaster is fine but there's something to appreciate in playing the Saturn original version. The game is a technical beast for the console throwing around all kinds of effects and the Saturn doesn't skip a beat, PS1 version is sloppy in comparison. The recent ports are a fine way to play but there's no technical gravitas to it, although Nightdive did a good job of recreating how some things like Saturn lighting/shading is handled, making it look like a solid approximation but it's a mishmash of details from the PS1 and Saturn version. It would be nice if there were a way to have a purist mode that doesn't throw all these flavors at you and instead sticks closely to either version.

If you want to appreciate the game in all ways, the Saturn version is the way to go. If you want some convenience, play the new version but make sure you use the subtractive lighting mode to get close to those rich Saturn colors and contrasts.

The game barely runs on the consoles of its time, sub 200p resolution, constant drops below 10 fps, awful aiming controls. The remaster is literally the same game with no meaningful changes, but the performance boost and resolution bump elevate it so much it's pretty crazy.

Anyway, it's a pretty fun Metroid Prime like game, you acquire new movement abilities and then go back to previous levels to unlock different paths. I recommend it.

Not counting the black bars at the top/bottom of the screen, the Saturn version is 320*224 and the PSX version is 320*232, which is standard for the time.

>constant drops below 10 fps

This is also a lie, but I didn't expect more of nightdive apologists. The worst thing about their remasters isn't the liberties they take with the games, but the pletorah of fanboys who now play games they don't enjoy just because it's hip.

Yes just play the remaster. It's a great game. Weird ammo system, focus on platforming. It's great fun.
