>need to make incredible music to be paired with these next-gen graphics>have to do it legit and without having any advantages over other snes programmers>mfw it actually works and nobody questions itHonestly quite incredible.
>>12283039DKC is a masterful art piece. Too bad the gameplay sucks tho
>>12283039Well under the hood the game is not different from any other platformer. Dame layers, same use of sprites, same logic etc. So not really that more difficult. It's just that the sprites were actually made on a compyutooor as renders. Fancy shmancy and hi tech.
>>12283090is this just the appeal of the time? cause i always found it weird when a game just bakes in 3D models into a 2D game
>>12283101It was cool.As a kid seeing those wire graphs of the models in ads felt hi tech. Computers are cool and those computer-shaded models looked futuristic. It also gave the game a distinct look compared to other SNES platformers.

>>12283039I thought this game looked like straight fucking garbage until this board taught me about shaders and now its gorgeous
>>12283101this was a late SNES game so it was able to have a much larger ROM size, coupled with the 3d models allowed them to make very smooth animations with a lot of frames.the 3d models at the time were state of the art, beyond what any system could do in real time, so it wasn't like a watered-down version of something you could find elsewhere, it was really the best graphics you could get.
>>12283075Yeah if only it had been a squad-based turn-based, resource-management, timed sim
>>12283039I wonder how they came up with the idea to add Diddy Kong. Were they worried that kids wouldn't relate to Donkey Kong?
>>12283570He was originally inspired by DK Jr. But really they just wanted to make new characters and stuff because they were given creative license to make an entirely new setting.
>>12283579Sorta. He was originally DK Jr but his design was so different Nintendo said they either had to make it look more like the actual DK Jr or just make it a new character. Rare went for the latter.
>>12283278And the layers. The snow levels blew my mind as a kid with how many levels of background and foreground there were.
