My guess is they decided it was a fools errand to try and compete with Tekken tag and Soul Calibur and the lukewarm reception didn't make them confident in producing a sequel. which is a shame since refinement and some expansion to the gameplay to make characters unique outside of different animations and attack colors would've gone along way. Guess not every series can get the street fighter treatment.
