Worse than the original Wonder Boy which is a completely different genre. Worse than the first hack and slash style entry, Wonder Boy in Monster Land. Worse than the weird shoot em up entry. And worse than the subsequent entries in the series.
I understand that the game is influential, especially for the whole metroidvania genre. But it has so many little issues which made it far less enjoyable than the other entries in the series. The game is either ridiculously easy in the early game or a massive pain towards the end. The extremely short range of the sword throughout the entire game makes it feel like your weak no matter how many hearts or armor upgrades you get. The final boss is also awful, with it dragging the player along for an annoying amount of time every time you're hit. Parts of the game were enjoyable, but I heard this entry being hyped up as one of the greatest releases for the master system and in the series.
>>
The worst thing about this thread is that you are probably talking about the butchered console port of Monster Land and not the original arcade version, which makes your opinion even worse

Man who has never heard of MAME

I'm glad to see the Master System getting some attention, but sad to see it's negative attention. The Master System was a good console and it brought untold joy to many homes. One of the annoying things about /v/ is that it has an American cultural bias and that means we have to suck off Nintendo every day.

>or a massive pain towards the end.

Holy filtered. This game is never even moderately hard.
>>
I tried the remake. It looked like a fucking flash game.
>>
>>12303828
he's talking about the direct sequel to that game, and it's console only, for SMS and PCE
>>
>>12304604
and, yeah, for late 80s being surprised that a hit arcade game is better than its direct to console sequel is like being surprised a hit feature film is better than its direct to home video sequel

>>12304025 Thanks Dave.
>>12303824 I like it okay but the criticisms of being too easy are true. A better game that takes after it (that's not retro and has a bad PC port) is Aggelos if you're looking for "Dragon's Trap but Good"
>>
>>12304973
Bro Aggelos is way easier than Dragon's Trap, what are you talking about?

Both great games though -- the remake, too
>>
>>12303824
I agree, it's just kinda bleh. Wonder Boy 2 was way more fun, and 4 took the Metroidvania-y formula from 3 and improved it hard. 3 just doesn't have that much going for it, probably the worst game in the series.

What version should I play adventure island on nes or wonder boy on master system??
>>
>>12304979
I could be mistaken since it's been a few years but I remember it giving me more trouble than Dragon's Trap.
>>
>>12305457
wonder boy arcade on mame
>>
>>12305457
Master System version is dumbed down, but has some new console-exclusive levels. The NES version is closer to the arcade and is kinda pointless to play when you can play the arcade version instead.

amazing how absolutely every great game in existence will have that one homosexual contrarian swearing that it's actually the worst thing ever.

Why is the cover art for this game so terrible? Who actually looked at this cover and thought they were going to get a decent game? I know not to judge a book by its cover, but this art couldn't have helped this game's sales.
I know western culture was quite xenophobic back in the 80s, so anime-style art wouldn't have been used, but they could've gone with something grittier than this bootleg Disney shit. I'm not saying Frank Frazetta art would fit the game's content, but it would've been more aesthetically pleasing.

Every Master System game had shitty cover art like that. This was the localized version of a Fist of the North Star game

Compared to the original Japanese release. Which game would you be more likely to notice and want to play? It no wonder the SMS failed in America it's like they weren't even really trying

Who cares what the bias is? Talk about things you like and never mind those who don't get it.
