Was it the best game of 1994?
>>
>>12304089
Probably Sonic 3
>>
>>12304089
>>12304102
1994 was fucking loaded. You can't say just one because that year overflowing with some of the all time greats of gaming.
>>
Doom II, I reckon.
>>
it was either super metroid or ffvi depending on your taste. donkey kong country is an incorrect, but acceptable answer as well.

every other option is blatantly wrong
>>
>>12304104
95 was even more loaded. Id argue 96 and 97 were too. 94-99 is the peak of gaming for sure.
>>
>>12304176
95
>>
>>12304176
1997 to 2000 is the peak
>>
>1994

The year that got the last Famicom and NES releases. In Europe we were still getting NES releases in summer of 1994. End of the year, Japan got the Saturn and PSX and games with mind boggling effects.

>Was it the best game of 1994?

Not even close. X-Com wins that year easily

>>12304174
I definitely like FF6 and Super Metroid too but I legitimately consider X-Com to be the greatest game of all time
>>
>my friend showed me this game after school once during 6th grade but even then I thought it was pretty lame
>>
>>12305146
I mean it's normal because at the time 2D was just seen as old, we all just wanted 3D, it was new. CK still has 3D graphics (and prerendered) but was still a 2D game.
It's a pretty neat platformer
>>
>>12304174
FFVI is so overrated.

SM is the most likely option as a crowd pleasing answer.
>>
>>12304102
It's either that or Super Metroid
>>
>>12304089
Final Fantasy VI was the best 1994 game for me. Lots of competition though, it was a great year.
>>
>>12304089
I just played both of these recently. Extremely soulful.
>>
>>12305146
I had a friend who showed me this game too, did yours also have divorced parents? I have a theory

I thought 2 was disappointing but 1 is great. It feels like a 8/16 bit action platformer but with 5th gen graphics, and we didn't get many of those (that were good). There is also Astal and Keio Flying Squadron 2, also on Saturn
>>
>>12305327
Yeah 2 felt easier and shorter to me despite being the second half of the overall game. I've put off playing Astal because of the ugly-ass character design, is it any good? I didn't even know KFS 2 was a platformer, I've had the first one in my backlog for awhile.
>>
>>12304089
Maybe it plays great? In screenshots, this toy story shit looks absolutely gay.
>>
>>12305596
Astal is pretty mediocre. FWIW I think Tryrush Deppy is a better 2D platformer. It's more unique, if a bit repetitive and flawed in gameplay, but the boss battles are great.
>>
>>12304104
1994 is my favorite year for gaming. So much shit came out. Not just your top tier games like DKC, S&K, Super Metroid etc...there were loads of awesome B-titles and when you were a kid that rented most of his games that means a lot.
>>
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
>>
>>12306115
I have it in my head that SM released at least a year but I thought 2 years before DKC for some reason.
>>
>>12306294
Yeah Super Metroid came out in the spring in 1994. If I recall it was the first game to use the "Only For Nintendo" branding on the package and was part of the first round of the Play It Loud advertising campaign. It definitely feels like a noticeable step up from what came before. There were so many great games for that year by the time DKC came out in November it just felt like Nintendo was showing off at that point.
>>
>>12306193
trying too hard
>>
including clockwork knight in clockwork knight 2 was highly impressive especially considering it took so long to discover
>>
>>12308959
That's because it's based on the JPN re-release which bundles 1 and 2 together, but for the western release they locked 1 behind 100%'ing 2. That's why there is this odd main menu at startup which only shows 2 at first.

Still pretty ballsy, they could have hoped 2 would help sell 1
>>
>>12304089
DKC
>>
>>12304176
94/95 were crossover years where you had games coming out for two generations of consoles, the arcades, the add on consoles and PC building it's own identity. There will never be a time like that in gaming again. Felt like there was constant big change on the horizon.
>>
>>12305313
>no
>>
>>12309197
Makes me wonder why they wouldn't sell it as a bundle or something.
