What happened to the Warcraft franchise?
>>
Why ask a question that you already know the answer to?
>>
>>12304937
>entire world repurposed for an MMO
>outsourced Warcraft III remake sucked ass
>RTS's in general died after copying Starcraft for 15 years and then getting oneshotted by MOBAs
>made me reply
>>
>>12304937
After this, it :NOT RETRO:
>>
WoW was what you call TOO successful, Blizzard ended up getting too big and only cared about money first and foremost after that. Chris and Mike being less and less involved in things helped with the decline.
There will never be a WarCraft 4.
>>
>>12304937
WoW happened and because of it we will never have a new Warcraft RTS game. Maybe its for the best considering current Blizzard.
>>
>>12304972
Jesus Christ!
>>
They made way more money off World of Warcraft than they would releasing an RTS, so they focused on that, and eventually they got bought out by Activision and what tiny remnant of old Blizzard was left died with that acquisition.
>>
>>12304941
Bc there hasn’t been a blizzard thread on here since the general died and went to /vst/.
>>
>>12305234
Wasn’t wow grossing around $150M per month at one point for them?
>>
>>12304937
They made an MMO sequel that ruined the entire medium of gaming for the next 20 years.
>>
How long before RTSes have a throwback boom like oldschool FPSes have had over the past several years? I thought the oldschool FPS genre was deaden berry, but now it seems like every time you turn around there's a new one being pumped out.
I'm guessing an RTS revival would never reach that point for a variety of reasons (new FPSes even if they were a totally different style have been made almost non-stop since the inception of the genre, there's more reference material, they're easier to produce than RTS in terms of gameplay), but I'd think there would be a market for them.

Never gonna happen it's a shit genre
>>
>>12304937
it got sold out to activision around wotlk and went to shit thereafter.
>>
here's what I would do if I were blizzard
>timeline split at the end of wc2
>one line continues to brutal rts theme that classic blizzard enthusiasts enjoyed
>the other one goes down the wc3/wow timeline where orcs are just green humans and they were the real victims and also everyone is now friends and there are furry races and dragon people and blacks and gays and they have parades to protest the real threat to azeroth (fascists) and most people just spend all day decorating their houses
>>
>>12304937
wow happened
and then the actual end of the 20th century
thank you hiroshima for the new captchas
>>
>>12304937
lol all you have to do is play the series to see what happened. You can even skip the first one, and you'll see it all laid out in front of you.
>>
>>12306729
And what, pray tell, is your brilliant contrarian take on that?
>>
>>12304937
When they find a money printer they are going to run it until the building burns down. Blizzard with WoW, Valve with Steam, Epic with Fortnite
>>
>>12306742
I mean, why wouldn't you? Studios spend hundreds of millions of dollars to produce games that sell for $60 dollars. Blizzard just has to design one mount and they can sell it on the cash shop for $100 a pop. The game doesn't even have to be good because 99% of the playerbase is just using it as a 3d chatroom for erp.
>>
>>12306748
I agree it makes perfect sense for a business
>>
>>12306237
zoomers cant even figure out which bathroom to use. they arent capable of playing rts.

Have WoW writers ever acknowledged that their fanfic completely vindicated Proudmoore?

And I'm not even talking about blasting of Theramore; the whole premise of the Horde vs Alliance conflict makes him right all along.
>>
>>12306791
yes.... ? which is why jaina pretty much got redeemed in BfA and stopped her childish daddy issues revolt?

let me guess, 90% of this thread is not about retro?
>>
>>12306792
So, there can't be a peaceful coexistence between different races, and the whole premise of Warcraft 3 dindu nuffing misunderstood orcs falls flat on its stupid face.
>>
>>12306801
its world of warcraft bro not world of peacecraft

>>12304937
It was WOW and its fucking dogshit lore:

>Cairne Bloodhoof, poisoned during a duel after being challenged by Grommash for the position of Warchief of the Horde.
>Kael'thas turning evil for what exactly? His kingdom of Quel'thalas, liberated, the sunwell restored. What reason could he want to become a pawn of Kil'jaeden?
>Sylvanas Windrunner destroying that night elven village and burning down that offshoot of Nordrassil because she was seething that she was still undead Then becoming a HoTS Kerrigan in the later shart-spansions.

And that was just a few of the many things I fucking hate about WOW.
Chief among them was that I did not have proper internet connection in the mid 2000s and after seeing the gameplay trailer of WOW, I understood the trajectory of where the series was heading.
Fuck MMORPGs.
Final Fantasy XI most especially.
>>
>>12305012
>There will never be a WarCraft 4.
And that is an objectively good thing.
>>
>>12306801
>the whole premise of Warcraft 3 dindu nuffing misunderstood orcs falls flat on its stupid face.
Akama, Elder Sage of the Draenei says otherwise.
>>
>>12306823
What's your point exactly? Draenei were another people oppressed by the race of peace.
>>
I mean, they could pretty easily make multiple full rts games just using the events from existing wow expansions

they'd be shit but they could do it
>>
They made an MMO and got too big so Craptivision conducted a hostile takeover and has been puppeting blizzard around for like 17 years now.
>>
>>12306179
Damn!
>>
>>12306546
>>the other one goes down the wc3/wow timeline where orcs are just green humans and they were the real victims and also everyone is now friends and there are furry races and dragon people and blacks and gays

WTF, dude?!
>>
>>12306818
I used to hold out hope like 10-15 years ago they’d get around to making Warcraft 4, but it’s so clear now that would be an awful mistake. NuBlizz is just not the same company that created all those classic games. It’s a husk living off fanboy fumes and shitty remaster bait.
>>
>>12307046
Warcraft 4 is Warcraft rumble.
Id like Warcraft 4 to be a gsg
>>
>>12307068
>id like Warcraft 4 to be…
Monkey’s paw, be careful.
>>
>>12306237
Check out that Tempest Rising on Steam. Closest we're ever going to get to new C&C game
>>
>>12305240
>Bc there hasn’t been a blizzard thread on here since the general died and went to /vst/.
Funny, I see Diablo threads pop up here almost every week.

one thing I dont here mentioned enough is the lack of side games to keep the series engage-able with different kinds of players instead of solely sunk cost paypigs. mainline went from RTS to MMO and began rotting away while side games were limited to a scrapped P&C, a digital card game, and a crossover moba that no longer receives content updates.
fuck man, even with this turbo cucked company we could've gotten at least some other games that could've be fun gameplay wise. some alliance/horde focused strategy game that expands upon eastern kingdoms/kalimdor and the respective faction, an FPS where you play as a light forged draenei mowing down the burning legion with light spells and draenei crystal tech weapons, roguelike dungeon crawler through the popular dungeons/raids where you slowly unlock new items to find and races to play, an RPG about a group of characters trying to stop a big bad and traveling throughout various continents to gather mcguffins and collect party members of all sorts of races, or maybe a Sid Meier's pirates rip off where you create a pirate group and fight off the bloodsail buccaneers, goblin cartels, and naga.
it's a big world and all the lore bloat actually helps in creating isolated stories, warcraft desperately needs some smaller scale stories and focus on characters and locations that aren't quite enough for a dedicated expansion.
>>
>>12306237
It's just so much harder to make an RTS that can compete with the genre's best than another Doom clone.
>>
>>12306237
Last year a bunch of "Command & Conquer" and "Blitzkrieg" source code was made public.
So, there ought to be some RTS games from mid-tier studios coming, I think, but, yeah, FPS are just more reasonable to make.
>>
You should ask blizzard
>>
>>12308204
And they die just as quickly as they pop up, in most cases. This board is clogged with spam posts, foreigners, and dumbass kids and redditfags doing baby’s first troll post ad nauseam.
>>
>>12309457
It’s too bad bc this board was actually decent during Covid and for a few years after. Started going to shit in 2024.
>>
>>12306750
Video games are art, not just a business!
>>
>>12306237
>How long before RTSes have a throwback boom like oldschool FPSes have had over the past several years? I thought the oldschool FPS genre was deaden berry, but now it seems like every time you turn around there's a new one being pumped out.

the difference is that old school FPSes like CRPGs are heavily romanticized by grognards into being something bigger than they really are. RTSes don't really have that romanticism.
>>
>>12306237
Well there's Dorf if that ever actually comes out.
>>
>>12304937
Blizzard struck gold with the WC3 map editor, they could have capitalized on indie games 10 years earlier if they weren't retarded.
>>
>>12312104
They sadly struck a bigger goldmine with their MMO: Instead of getting a cut of $15-$20 dollar indie games, they got millions to keep paying $15/mo to play the same game as well as pay for expansions.
