Is this the best retro game?
I prefer SotN
>>12305498this or DKC2 or mega man x
>>12305498I'm not really into the SNES library
No, it's not "the best" (not a real thing) but it's one of the better ones for a some players. It was my #1 favorite game in the '90s until I started playing RPGs.It's the ominous lonely feeling for most of the game that just does something for me.
>>12305498calling something the best overall game is too subjective because games in different genres are too different and do different things. Calling it the best game within its genre of sidescrolling adventure games is reasonable.
does it really matter? I never understood the obsession with making my favorite game everyone else's favorite game too.
>>12305525>I never understood the obsession with making my favorite game everyone else's favorite game too.this thread isnt about anyones favorite game

>>12305512gross, that genre comprised of DVD menus and anime tropes?
I think Super Metroid is the epitome of the “quintessential” game in its series. Has everything the series is known, it includes all the series hallmarks in every category and more.
>>12305498No, it's stretching to even call it top 5 SNESThe artstyle and atmosphere is nice but at the end of the day, it's just a glorified square inspecting simulator. Enemies and hazards pose zero threat and bosses are underwhelming.
>>12305498It's my favorite. There is no such thing as "the" best game though.
>>12305512>until I started playing RPGs.I'm so sorry that happened to you, anon. :(
>>12305498No, Link's Awakening is. Super Metroid is a viable candidate for 2nd best game ever made. It is a masterclass in game design.
>>12305498Possibly, yeah. I'd say Link's Awakening is on par if not better as a package and taking into account the limitations of the system it was released on. Super Metroid is indisputably one of the ten best games ever made, for sure. It is a masterpiece of game design.
>>12306549>>12306557Oops, didn't realise my first post went through
>>12305498I'd answer this way>was it groundbreaking?Yes, though a lot of what it did was tried in Metroid 1 and 2. Super Metroid finally polished it and upped the ante>was it influential?Absolutely, Metroidvania is an obvious example, plenty devs cite it as influence.>is it flawless?IMO, absolutely not. It's clear that the controls need getting used to, Fusion was far more intuitive. You control like you're floating in space, and I don't mean it in a good way. It's also clear that it doesn't have much in action department, and Metroidvania spiced up the formula more interesting by adding the RPG elements. Super Metroid really all rests on excellent execution, without it you get far inferior games like Zero Mission>is it your favorite?I love it, but it's not even in my top 10.>is it for everyone? That's the problem, with all said above, it can and does filter many. You might expect a run n gun, or some progression element to collecting all missile tanks. None of that is true, Metroid is a weird case of 2D side scrolling game where action pretty much doesn't matter. I also think ADHD zoomers will find it boring and confusing. >bottom lineIs it great? Objectively, yes. Is it the greatest? That's up to preference. I think "the greatest" game should be liked by most people. Super Metroid did one thing amazingly well, but not other things.
>>1230549810/10 first time I beat it but then never played it againThe game is very immersive and a great experience but I just don't want to get lost in some caves againStill a 10/10 though
>>12305867>it's just a glorified square inspecting simulator. And Mario is just a glorified gravity-defiance simulator
ive never been able to play more than 5 minutes of a Metroid game, including those Switch versions where they start you out fully equipped
>>12305867I can't even imagine a top 5 SNES list that doesn't include Super Metroid.
>>12306549>>12306557>>12306559Link's Awakening is okay, but it's clearly a little handheld game that doesn't measure up to console contemporaries.
>>12305498I would say yes. The first time I played this game I remember thinking how this game could easily pass as a modern indie title. Very nice graphics, and was surprised how modern it felt.
>>12305507or Super Punchout! You nearly invalidated the thread, but you kept it going with one sneaky omission you conniving bastard.
