finally got around to this game and I'm loving it so far. I had the misconception that it had some bullshit difficulty but all the enemy patterns are pretty easy to learn and the game is generous with health, checkpoints, and infinite continues.
I'm currently stuck on 6-2 but making progress,

I had fun trying to go through a few levels without getting hit. pretty rare for me to beat something and immediately want to go back and do it again more efficiently

i've seen a lot of samey looking ninja games. anything. else to scratch the itch once i'm done with the NES trilogy?

master system ninja gaiden (its very different but also great), shinobi 3 on genesis, ninja spirit on PCE and shadow of the ninja on NES should be your highest priority I think.

Ninja Gaiden is a game that's designed to be played quickly. The enemy respawns have a pretty low threshold and if you play carefully you can get yourself into more trouble than if you'd just ran through quickly. It's easy to develop a sort of rhythm once you get going.
The main bullshit thing about NG is that you get sent allll the way back to 6-1 if you die anywhere in the boss gauntlet. Jaquio is a pain in the ass (hint, stay on the floor and wait for your moment to attack) but the other two bosses aren't bad though.

Kabuki Quantum Fighter is so similar it's a wonder Tecmo didn't sue. Really really overlooked gem.

picrel is basically a 2 player, lower quality ninja gaiden. its probably been over 20 years since i played this but might be worth a playthru

everything past 5-1 could reasonably be called bullshit.

I wouldn't necessarily describe it like this. it's a game designed around disciplined forward movement. if you flinch and reflexively jump backwards for safety you'll be punished by spawns being re triggered. it is often advantageous to pause even if you have to dodge patterns in place.

Yeah not to discredit everything that comes before Act 6 (this game is great) but the 'real' Ninja Gaiden starts at 6-1, Jaquio 2 and that infamous bug are the reason why people call this game bullshit. The game itself is just an average 80s action platformer in terms of difficulty

To add on to what others have said:
Psychic Killer Taromaru is damn good.
Shinobi Legions gets a bad rel but it's actually pretty decent, especially the earlier levels. It can have some fluid gameplay if you can finagle it.

I see what you mean. the first screen of 6-2 feels very inconsistent with the jetpack guys. the rest wasn't so bad though
>>
>>12306760
With the exception of like two jumps, one of which being in the final stage where the game's respawning bullshit hits its peak, and the final boss, Ninja Gaiden is surprisingly not a difficult game. It's really overrated in terms of challenge. The sequels are all much harder from all the annoying gimmicks that get added.

I think the reason I enjoy it so much is because every single enemy dies in one hit. you can run through every level and half the enemies appear in your path for easy kills, then you just need to figure out how to bait out or ignore the rest. there's a handful of exceptions to do this but you can either tank hits or clear them with your sub weapon.
>>
>>12307209
Yeah for sure, it flows nicely when you get going. If I ever decided to speedrun a game, I could see myself choosing NG1 just for how smooth it is.
>>
>>12306760
One of the reasons people regard it as a difficult game is due to how the games combat and platforming work. You need to constantly be on the move in most cases and commit to your actions. It actually is better most of the time when you aren't playing it super careful like most other platformers of that time. You want to run, jump and attack as if you were an expert at the game.
>>
>>12307574
Some of that, but some of the later levels contain actual unfair bullshit.
>>
>>12307654
That requires maneuvering around the bullshit, the method hasn't really changed

3-1 is around the time I start losing my patience and get filtered. same with castlevania, never even seen whatever boss comes next after the mummy bros. I absolutely can not do world 8 in mario 3, and just end my run once I make it there. I am very bad at videogames.
>>
>>12308561
If you can at least get to World 8 without warps in SMB3 then it's really weird that you get filter'd by 3-1 in NG
>>
I unlocked this in ninja gaiden for the Xbox and got filtered fairly early by it’s difficulty I wish you luck op
