I'd argue either pic related, or maybe Tempest
>>
Probably Tetris, since even people who weren't into video games got hooked on it.

Yeah, Tetris probably has the best balance when it comes to how old it is and how popular it still is
Hard to say what's the oldest game I can enjoy a decently long session of, but Galaga is a strong contender. Pac-Man is a classic for a reason too, but I just enjoy Galaga more

I can enjoy a good number of classic pre-Nintendo video games like DigDug, Missile Command, Asteroids, etc. But Pacman I've always found pretty boring, I never understood how it go as huge as it did.

Pac-Man isn't a bad game but yeah, in my opinion it might a bit overrated when it comes to the "golden age"

Gotta be Double Shuffle. Flippers were a game changer.

A few years ago I gave Zork a spin and honestly I was hooked. Can't think of anything earlier than that that I'd recommend to anybody.

Pac-Man was one of the first video games to have identifiable characters, and the lack of shooting in it appealed to people who thought that that was too violent.
Personally, I think it's held up exceptionally well for a game from 1980, and I'd take it over Missile Command, which it predates by a month.
I feel obligated to shout out Rally-X and Berzerk too, even though both of those games came out several months after Pac-Man or Missile Command.

Gonna give a shout out to Crazy Climber too. I'm surprised that one came out in 1980. Fucking love that game.
>>
>>12307912
Probably Space Invaders, I can't think of an older game that was better, but it was surpassed by Galaxian and the Galaga. Missile Command and Tempest were really good too. So we're Breakout and Pacman.
>>

Lunar lander, it didn't really get copied much and the concept wasn't expanded on until at least flight simulators in the late 90's.
>>
>>12307984
Pac-man was the casual scum game of its day.

I'd say breakout provides more of a dopamine hit

the old versions of missile command I've played just mindlessly scale according to some algorithm until you reach a point where it's physically impossible to win, so even if you're going for "high scores" there's just a brick wall at some point
>>
>>12310807
That’s true of most early classics. How is that any different than Tetris?

Also the record Missile Command high score played for 56 hours straight, so you just need to git good

>How is that any different than Tetris?
Most versions of Tetris hit a maximum difficulty that's still playable, that's when the actual competition starts. Compare that to Space Invaders where the enemies eventually move so fast you can't even shoot them down with a TAS. I don't know about Missile Command, I've definitely played versions where after a certain point RNG becomes the deciding factor.

Be that as it may, 99.9% of people aren't playing any of these games with global competition in mind. The fact that someone could play Missile Command for 56 hours on one coin means the game must be relatively fair.
