Thoughts on Double Dragon?
The slowdown is atrocious but its still better than the NES demake
>>12308046i can respect that
>>12308036Dont really like any of the games besides the gba double dragon advance thats a good game. Idk the hit detection always felt weird. The nes version is okay and the genesis version is terrible

Great gameHaters are just being contrarians
Proof that games do in fact, age.
>>12308036Cousin first told me about this amazing co-op arcade game with great graphics and sound. We played it at a train station. Since then, I trekked all the way to that station just to play it again and again. Was excited in seeing an ad for an upcoming NES port in Nintendo Fun Club (pre-Nintendo Power). The NES game was still enjoyable but not accurate to the arcade feel that I wanted. Had to wait all the way until the GBA for the version I wanted.
>>12308182You're an attention whore
>>12308036back in the day when you saw that cabinet, you knew it was going to be worth your 25¢. Between the music and the playability you were going to have a good time. Even better if you had a friend and could make it to the finale together.
>>12308182Very nice
>>12308182>Double Dragon: TWOWhy not just call it Quadruple Dragon? That would've been 80s hair metal as fuck
>>12308036Fun game, but not as deep or fun as later beat em ups. The NES version is arguably better than the arcade, or at least more interesting. If you want to 1CC it fast, the elbow attack makes the game super easy.
>>12308170I think the original arcade game holds up well but most of the home ports are kinda bad. Who thought trying to make a version for the Atari 2600 was a good idea?
>>12308185I do like that Charlie Puth song too. The bass just hits right.>>12308216Yeah, once we figured the elbow attack was very consistent, a single quarter really lasts for a playthrough, until my cousin and I had to duel it out for the end.>>12308218Pretty fitting given the time frame and its setting inspiration which I had no clue about. Until the NES game's instruction manual, I thought the two main characters names were Spike (red) and Hammer (blue) given the artwork on the control panel, and those would have been more appropriate to the 80s too.
It can not be understated how huge Double Dragon used to be where I lived. If you had an NES, you had at least one game in the trilogy, and Double Dragon'ing was almost a guaranteed birthday party event.By comparison, nobody knew what the fuck Mega Man or Castlevania were.
>>12308036I personally prefer the NES version.
>>12308036Mogged by The Combatribes
>>12308036i only like 2 on NES
>>12308036the SMS version is actually better
>>12308453Good taste
>>12308060I love the Double Dragon games but yeah Final Fight really did revolutionize the genre by making the hit detection actually feel solid. Before that every beat em up sorta felt like you were all ghosts swinging on each other in a dream.
>>12308036I like DD but it is one of the most cursed series out there. It has a legendary reputation but very few of the games are any good plus almost all of the recent entries to the series feel like half assed cash grabs.
It's funny that the cartoon ended up lifting the designs for Jimmy and Billy straight off of Fist of the North Star considering Tetsuo Hara did promotional art for the game.
>>12310391That makes sense and maybe golden axe too cause I know golden axe basically was a little inspired by double dragon like what if we made double dragon in Conan the barbarian or something. I had never played any of the double dragon games until recently and I know I sound like. A hater but I just dont like them and cant do it besides double dragon advance that game ive played a bunch and is really good not to keep shilling it but its top tier
I like Super, the music is cool
The 1 on 1 mode on nes was a banger in a pre sf2 world
>>12310402Never saw an episode of the DD cartoon, but I had all the POGs when I was a kid.
>>12308036a game I loved as a little kid. I wasnt even tall enough to reach the arcade controls and I had to use a chair from the pizzeria. its a favorite of mine and I still love the franchise, from one on one fighting games to fan-made OpenBOR mods.
>>12308251The 2600 was hilariously outdated by this point and yet it did still have an enormous install base. The whole idea of home gaming was still kind of new and a surprising amount of people didn't really embrace the idea of next-gen consoles. They bought an Atari and that was their game console and that was that. They were mostly old people who didn't actually use the thing much to begin with. But maybe their kids did so even though they couldn't convince mom and dad to splurge on an NES they still might get a new game every once in a while. So if you were stuck with a 2600 but still wanted the hot new shit everyone was playing...well, this is what you made do with. It was a niche audience but these ports didn't cost much. There's a 2600 version of Rampage, too.
It's the progenitor of later, better beat'em ups and it shows. The fact that enemies simply don't get stunned by your punches and can just hit you back while you're hitting them makes it feel really bad to play, this makes the regular punch and kick essentially useless as the only safe way to attack enemies is using moves that knock them down, mainly the elbow smash and the jump kick. You could call this behavior realistic or challenging to try to turn it into a good thing but to me it's just a chore and makes me wish I was playing Final Fight or Streets of Rage instead. That said it was certainly an awesome game for its time and deserves respect, it has a great aesthetic style and I specially love how the stages flow into each other seamlessly.
>>12308036First side scrolling beat’em up I ever played. Saw it at Skate King in Seattle for a school field trip. The girls skated, the boys played at the arcade. We wondered why we had to fight each other at the end. Didn’t learn about the difference between the American and Japanese story until years later. It’s dated, compared to Streets of Rage, Final Fight, and The Punisher. But it’s an early game. Of course it will be. The NES was a disappointment, but the Sega version by Headgames was much closer to the arcade.
>>12308036Super Double Dragon is a GOD-TIER game. The defensive game is something we wouldn't see until Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. I've never played any other 2d beat 'em up game where blocking worked so well to the game flow.Really channeling the Bruce Lee inspirations as well. Full powerup = Billy Bruce Lee Screaming
>>12308036The cartoon intro is catchy as shit. Though I hardly remember anything about, it had dudes with swords and I loved swords as a kid.
>>12312761It plays much differently than Konami, Capcom and Sega's famous brawlers. It takes a bit of getting used to but is very satisfying. Not /vr/ but DD Neon is also a very defensive game.>>12312963The cool theme song is about all it had going for it. Also I look for any excuse to post this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0wxrqQqw5Q
>>12308046>slows down even on 1 playerwhy didn't any of the devs just think "maybe we should fix this" before releasing it
>>12308036The grappling mechanics, lack of archetypes, realistic animations, and slower-paced gameplay are interesting. But the faulty hitboxes and shitty framedata make for a painful experience. Not to mention that it lacks the charm of the Kunio-kun series. But I really like the DD fighting games.
>>12312712>Didn’t learn about the difference between the American and Japanese story until years later. What do you mean? I know in America it's common for to think the ending implicates that Jimmy was "secretly the boss the whole time derpp" but what was different in Japan? I know here the brothers fight each other, but it was always over who gets Marian.
