Has there ever been another game that become super-popular so late into its console's lifespan? The GB was nearly 10 years old when it got released for it and it had been underpowered and weak since 1990/1991.
>>12308083There are caveats, but maybe San Andreas on the PS2?
GTA V (PS3/Xbox 360): Released just 2 months before the PS4 and Xbox One arrived. It sold ~32.5 million copies on those "obsolete" consoles alone within its first year.

"late into its console's lifespan" is when the install base is the largest (not to mention when developers are the most experienced at exploiting the platform). It makes sense that some of the best selling games come out at that point in the lifecycle.

>>12308083That Harry Poter game on PSX which became a system best seller's after the PS2 came outWith that said, no, there is nothing quite comparable to Pokémon. The Game Boy had been dead for almost 3 years when it released and it singlehandeldy revived it, lead to other games being released/re-released, and was probably the entire reason behind the Pocket and GBC
>>12308393GB Pocket came out in '96, just after the Japanese release of Pokemon. They started working on the GB Color in the early '90s in response to the Lynx and the Game Gear.
Guitar Hero.
>>12308426Good answer
>>12308083Most people I know got it for their GB Pocket or Color.
>>12308823Yeah I first got Red for my GB Pocket. At that point seeing the bulky original Game Boy felt like a novelty. I only knew one kid with one.
>>12308083Maybe some Switch games. Pokemon RBY and GS were basically GBC games.
>>12309448Red/Blue/Yellow weren't color-enhanced, but instead were enhanced for the Super Game Boy.Gold/Silver were color-enhanced for play on GBC. Kind of weird that they weren't GBC games from the get-go, yet Crystal was.
>>12308083Pokémon single-handedly revived the system. It was wild.
>>12308083The fact of the matter is, the Game Boy was just THAT good. Simplicity and elegance. The GBA was a mistake. If the industry were healthier, we would still be getting new official Game Boy (not romhack/GBstudio slop) games for it to this day.
>>12308426>>12308769I wouldn't call 2005 late into the PS2's lifespan
Persona 4 was released after the PS3 had launched iirc
Kill yourself
>>12309635And yet, it was. The PS2 has a lot of examples of these hugely popular late-cycle games though, for this reason >>12308107
>>12308083> it had been underpowered and weak since 1990/1991.Compared to hardware that didn't have a fraction of the market share? That doesn't mean its underpowered, it means the other hardware was overpowered. And I love my Game Gear.
>>12309668Yeah it didn't come out until 2008. Even Persona 3 came out in America after the PS3 launched.

>>12308083Not like Pokémon but there's a lot of games that come out at the end of a consoles life and do well because the user base is at it's biggest.
Persona 4 is the closest I can think of, came out in 2008 on the PS2.
>>12308083I'm in the middle of replaying it and having a great time but holy fuck those casino coin trading prices for the unique pokemonI can't believe I ever got any of them as a kid on regular game boy, nevermind with regular game boy hardware and no save scumming or turbo.I must have used the missingno item dupe on a nugget and then just buy them outright rather than waste any more time on slot machines.
Pokemon was an entirely unique phenomenon. Yeah there are plenty of games that were massively successful near the end of their console's life, but never a game that was SO successful that it revived a console that was basically dead and convinced the console maker to start supporting it again for like another 5 years. Like what pokemon did would be the equivalent of a PS4 exclusive game coming out right now, selling like 80m copies over night, and then Sony decides to go back all in on PS4 production and development until like 2030.
>>12308083Not entirely related but this reminded me that Thracia 776's standalone cartridge release shipped 3 months before the PS2 came out.
>>12311249Damn, red/blue really do look nice with the sgb pallette. Really pleasing to the eye. I was a bit too young to have a snes so I only ever played them on a gbc. Thx for posting this.

Pokemon released in 1996, the Game Boy was supported through 2002. It launched at the middle of the devices life, not near the end of it.>>12313269>Thracia 776's standalone cartridge releaseDoesn't exist. It's just a Nintendo Power cartridge with an optional sticker. Thracia is digital-only.
>>12313695Pokemon Blue Version, pictured in the OP, was released in 1998.
>>12313695>Doesn't exist.note the 2000 copyright, next to the 1999 (when it was released for nintendo power) copyright.
>>12313216I just dumped money into the coin trade
>>12313696>Global releases for games were always synchronized, especially in the 90's.
>>123149131998 was very much at the end of the Gameboy's life and future support in the West was entirely because of Pokemon Red/Blue.
>>12314919I was addressing the fact that Pocket Monsters did indeed come out in 1996, so the "but ackshyully" was incorrect.
>>12308290I definitely agree on Kirby, probably helped that it wasn't developed like a budget release and instead was among the most powerful and overall best NES games. The NES's lifespan was weird, since you had high quality releases like Kirby coming out after the console was official outdated, but instead of simply being low quality shovelware for poor kids, some of them would easily rank among the best games for the console (like Kirby, Zoda's Revenge, Mega Man 6).
>>12313696Which was just a re-release of Pokemon Red and Green with redrawn sprites, and those games released in February 1996.
>>12313698That is literally a Nintendo Power cartridge with a sticker on it, same as Metal Slader Glory.
>>12314919No it wasn't. Game Boy Color released in 1998 and that had support all the way through 2002. All of the hardware numbers and sales data for Game Boy include the Game Boy Color because they're the same generation. Claiming that the Game Boy generation ended in 1998 is like claiming that the 3DS gen ended in 2014 when an updated version released.
>>12308094>4 years into console's lifespan>7th gen home consoles weren't even out yetI hate when people compare SA's 2004 release to some late ass (as in already when the PS5 was out) 360 release or some shit.
Mother 3, maybe not super popular in a mainstream sense, but pretty damn well known to Nintendo enthusiasts. Came out in 2006 on the GBA, which is basically half a decade after the console launched and essentially 2 years after the DS launched.>But pokemon!Feels like cheating as the color wasn't necessarily out yet and the gameboy had a long as fuck lifespan for whatever fucking reason.
>>12308083paper mario
>>12308083>Has there ever been another game that become super-popular so late into its console's lifespan?God of War is another great example of this. First game came out a bit under 2 years before the PS3's release. God of War 2 came out after the PS3's launch but still released as a PS2 game.
>>12315163lmao ok man
I wish I had saved that magazine article I saw that was talking about how dead the Game Boy was in 1995 and how it was on its last breaths.

>>12316008Do you know which magazine? I just sifted through some '95 EGM issues and couldn't find anything
>>12316082didn't we have a backport of a game released for atari? last year
>>12315052Is Zoda's Revenge even any good? I never hear anyone talk about it. I played StarTropics for the first time ever last year and the game gets increasingly more bullshit the longer it goes on
>>12309493No. After pokemon it was replaced. In a sense pokemon killed the DMG.
>>12313269The original Fire Emblem is a great example too. One of the most influential RPGs of all time, and it came out on the Famicom seven months before the launch of the Super Famicom.
>>12313671This shit probably spawned the Lavender Town creepypastasHoly shit my eyes
>>12308107FFIX is a poor example of this and saw a huge drop in sales compared to FFVII/VIII.If you wanted a real example of a late PS1 title selling incredibly well, you'd go with Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone which came out more than a year after FFIX and sold 45% more copies. There's something a little bizarre about FFIX that causes people to start inventing their own reality when it comes to the game's performance. It is a little peculiar.
