Have you played a VR game recently that was just a glorified advertisement for another media recently?
I decided to give this action Van Helsing game on PS2 a try.
It's very hanky. For the life of me can't understand why the dodge isn't tied to the right stick. Maybe it was before God of War? Seems like this takes more after DMC.
If the aiming wasn't shit (Like good luck getting your combos on an specific target), the dodge unreliable (Sometimes he jumps instead or it's hard to dodge to the right direction) and game wasn't jack as shit, I would consider it a good game.
Also just me or these games feel soulful lately? Like sure they were cash grabs but for some reason It feels like Devs wanted to actually make something good but they just sucked. I dunno current games feel much more soulless and corporate than these games meant to advertise other media.

Genuinely good game, fun movement and challenging enemies, pretty standard action gameplay but climbing on walls and the ceiling can take getting used to

It seems licensed video games have quite a bad reputation, and I get why... but man, I love them, It's what I played the most as a kid and over the years I've grown to be more tolerant of kusoge, appreciating the good aspects that make the bad aspects worth enduring. In terms of quality, I'd say Disney, Spider-Man and Batman are the most successful ones.

I want to get into this version, didn't enjoy the NES or Genesis ones much, the Game Boy oddly enough was my favorite by far. Alien Syndrome and Xenophobe also look pretty cool.

I played recently because I finished GOW the one on PS2 and PSP and I wanted to try it since I remember I was interested as a kid because a friend of mine had it and had a good memory but now as an adult and playing it longer, made me notice the same things as you anon. Janky controlls, okay graphic, nice weapons and combos you'll never finish, boss battle are between easy and kinda hard but beacuse of the controls going against you.
A Movie tie in I loved was Bourne trilogy(I know not retro) on Xbox 360 but I never replayed now so i don't know if it was spoiled like milk and in the past I even tought it was a nice beat em up game but kinda meh and the shooting scenes scuked a lot I prefered the fist fights.

I loved the movie and because of that I have always wanted to play it to the end.
Its an interesting game because like most tie in media, they have to come up with ideas to stretch it into the new format.
Its also kinda cool to see for the most part, these games tend to have shit like concept art of the movie.
Another thing is surprisingly the PS2 lacks that many hack and slash games. Like outside DMC and GOW, I can only think of this and Ghost Rider as options for this genre

my entire knowledge of the alien franchise pretty much begins & ends with the AvP games and fireteam elite.
