Let's have a thread for non-game music that sounds like it came straight from some retro game (if that's allowed).

The only non game music i listen to is music that I can picture being used in a game. Everything else bores/disgusts me.

Are we talking about stuff that inspired vgm composers? Many of them did and have composed based of genres and artists that they like; Koji Kondo, Koichi Namiki and many others really like J-fusion, Yuzo Koshiro loved electronic music from his contemporary clubbing scene, some of the Namco Sound Team were so into YMO that they formed a parody band... even Tim Follin said 'fuck it' and put Starsky and Hutch's main theme note for note in a contest game no one gave a fuck about:

Those are pretty top tier picks OP. The Brian Eno thing definitely sounds like Earthbound. It also sounds like a Weather Report-lite composition but there isn’t anything I can think of off the top of my head that Weather report has that is straight up earth bound. One of the EB themes sounds straight up like something from steely Dan. One of the battle themes little chord pattern things.

I love return to forever but never got much into chick’s electric band era that’s pretty dope. Sick logo too.

I think a lot of stuff from Weather Report’s Mr Gone (1978) inspired a lot game composers. Here below River People that opening synth poly-portamento sound is line exactly the battle start sound from Earthbound. And then the bass ostinato clearly influenced the Mario underground theme
https://youtu.be/2DuePlxXfAM?si=KBAaofPtBme0wohd

Also this one from the same album called “the elders” always felt to me like could be a good cave music thing. Or some other kind of mysterious settings music. https://youtu.be/iKTvkCaFVZ4?si=ygSRkCkq2JdO6sZu

Koji Kondo especially his stuff with organ seems inspired by Emerson Lake and Palmer and Deep purple. The boss theme for ff7 has some direct riffs from “Child in Time” particularly the Hammond organ solo section.

Sonic 3 stuff definitely influenced by Chuck brown and Washington DC gogo stuff, even the supposedly non-MJ tracks hint at those early 90s RnB styles he was incorporating, but more DC gogo and less New Jack Swing

Haha shit that’s spot on. I think deep purple was pretty popular in Japan. They did their big live album there in the early 70s.

There’s this obscure pc engine/turbo graphix game called Zero Yon Champ (quarter mile drag racing) that when you are working at the arcade the music sounds like a direct combo of the song Burn combined with Smoke on the water.

This. All japanese retro game music comes from YMO, who got it from Kraftwerk
>>
>>12310643
most chiptune composers and people trying to make "retro" sounding music completely neglect to research the actual inspirations of the famous VGM compositions. it's a mixture of things, after the war jazz/bigband caught on in japan pretty heavily and my theory is that people who were musically educated there were trained on jazz standards. (count basie is a favorite of japanese from what I can gather) light music was also a thing. eventually you had jazz fusion bands like casiopea and t-square who took inspiration from all these sources (and western groups too like shakatak and mezzoforte, shakatak was popular in japan especially)

Autechre were approached by Retro to do the soundtrack but Nintendo said no. I'd say there's still some of their dna in the soundtrack like the more beat-heavy Prime tracks that definitely took some cues from Anvil Vapre

YMO are no doubt highly influential and were blatantly ripped off at times but stop acting like they invented video game music and that EVERY SINGLE FUCKING VIDEO GAME COMPOSER listened to nothing but them.
It's really tiresome and disingenuous.
