Which ones you most looking forward to?
>>
Resident Evil Outbreak. Finally removing the fps cap, load times and the shitty room master netcode would make playing online a gigantic upgrade in every way.
>>
>>12310116
I'm shocked the progress Sh is making. I hope other 3D games follow suit.

>>12310119
Oh yeah, decomping dead online games could allow you to create new netcode and new hosting rooms much more easily. RIght now we have to go through PCSX2 which is a pain.

I also wouldn't mind options such as first person view either since the games are fully 3D.

I bought Vagrant Story because I saw it advertised in gamer mags and played a demo disc. It's super cool aside from the lame-o combat. My dream was to turn it into Vagrant Story of Time.

Every time I try to look into decomp stuff I realize I'm too retarded for this shit
>>
>>12310212
It's reverse engineering source code. very technical and time consuming stuff.
>>
>>12310129
trannies or something
>>
>>12310290
I just mean down to playing the shit. Between tracking shit down and doing compiling stuff my brain too smol
>>
>>12310129
Most of these games are functionally abandoned by their IP owners, and thus they should fuck off and let the fans handle them. Having the source code means that we can do what we want with these games, even if it's just simple source ports.

Like god damn, the official ports of Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time are just lame ineffectual emulation laden with bugs and stuck with the original 20fps cap. Who the fuck says I can't play Mario 64 with 48 players? Or use netplay in Mario Party?

Da fuck Miyamoto gonna do?
>>
>>12310116
I get so frustrated seeing these videos now, because it's always decompilations and never ports that are playable.
>>
>>12310382

Me.
>>

Yeah, decomps are only the starting point. They're useless for the average person.
It's annoying how many clueless people think decomp means port.
>>
>>12310507
Doesn't help when people post clickbait images that lumps ports in with them.
>>

I sooner see someone put Valkyrie Profile's gameplay in Xenogears than that happen.
>>
>>12310507
Is it two different teams that decomp and then port stuff? Because there's plenty of decomps that have turned into nothing. Are they hoping someone else will do the porting?
>>
>>12310535
>Is it two different teams that decomp and then port stuff?
Yes. Decompiling and porting require different sets of skills.
>Are they hoping someone else will do the porting?
Kind of? People decompile games for their own reasons, like researching the game's mechanics or making rom hacks. Someone else can make a port if they want.
>>
>>12310129
>who is this for?
Modders.
>>
>>12310129
I can play SH2 and SH3 in first person. It's not a full decomp but nerd boy fans have examined and did some work on the code to figure out how ti works.
>>
>>12310507
Sure, but having readble code means there's a always a possibility. If not that, then at least it makes modding/hacking the game much easier. Just look at what people have been able to do with pokered etc.
>>
So it's okay to shill youtube channels on /vr/ now? I can't wait for all the e-celeb and "gaming culture" threads!
>>
Unironically, what are some good mods that have been released thanks to decomp projects?

Only resident evil games I never played, although it seems to just be one dude working on it so likely it will be awhile

When Star Wars Shadow of The Empire to make another game based on the comic of the same name, which follows the parallel adventures of Luke, Leia and Han ? ??

I love the idea of RE4 VR, but hate that it's tied to some stupid bullshit VR headset. If they decomp RE4, we could get first person support, and VR support as well.

Where are those remakes on PC that ain't Mugen skinpacks and fix the shitty AI input Steals?

The Sims 2: Castaway.
>>

Decompilation usually serves three purposes.
Ports, for preserving access to games so they're not restricted to older hardware or emulators.
Modding, for new experiences with the same engine, which can be applied to either the original ROM and formats or to ports.
Documentation, for in-depth understanding of the game program, typically for discovering in-game exploits beneficial to speedrunning, but otherwise useful for game preservation efforts.

The Paper Mario decompilation so far from what I've seen has just been the latter, I haven't seen any ports or mods emerge for it.

What's the legal stance on using archived source code?
Someone bought the project files for Frogger 2 and released it online. Can it be used for ports or anything?
>>
is it easier to decompile a console game?
>>

>Modding

and can you do any of these things?
>>
>>12312976
No, legal precedent with stuff like Bleem and Galoob Game Genie, and unlicensed SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive games, has been that if you clean room reverse engineer something, you're in the clear to use that.
Using any part of a company's actual source code without permission is a huge legal no-no.

That's why all of those decompilation based ports, or static recompilation ports, require the user to provide their own ROM.
The clean-room code is fine, but they still need the assets from a "user's legal ROM/ISO backup", since each individual asset is subject to copyright.

Kaze Emanuar is taking this a step beyond with his "Return to Yoshi's Island" mod of Super Mario 64.
Using the decompiled source code of SM64, he's been gradually rewriting and optimizing that code to fix mistakes and get performance gains, and is close to achieving 0% "Nintendo-authored" code. Meaning that if he stripped out all of the Nintendo authored assets and protected IPs, he could use the engine to make a legally clear commercial project.
I recall it should be possible to build his custom SM64 engine without needing libultra, Nintendo's official N64 SDK. You might recall that cancelled Portal 64 project because it made unauthorised use of libultra, instead of a homebrew SDK like libdragon.
>>
>>12310485
>who is this for?
Everyone except you. These decomps were made with the explicit purpose of excluding you and specifically you while being for everyone else.
>>
>>12310116

mine
NO you can't know what game it is and NO i haven't started it yet nor do i know how
>>
>>12313009
cool, and what do (You) plan on doing with it?
i'm guessing nothing
>>
>>12310116
None of the titles I’d like to be decomp’d are being done, so I wait until someone does and then ports as well. Fighting games don’t often get love in this regard.
