If your map has literal multiple thousands of monsters (and it's not for some gimmick like a big crusher) fuck you.
>>
>>12311170
the gimmick is the bfg and rocket launcher
>>
>>12311224
That gimmick is for hundreds, not thousands. If my finger gets tired from holding the mouse button down, your map sucks.

>>> CLASSIC DOOM CHALLENGE <<<

This time, instead of a max demo, just boot up Doom 2 while recording (-cl2) and see how far you can get in a single segment. You don't need to get all kills or secrets, though they may be helpful. Winner is whoever makes it furthest, or whoever beats the game fastest, I suppose.
Reply to this post with a demo & your time.

Current records and more examples can be found here:
https://dsdarchive.com/wads/doom2?level=D2All

Here's an example demo by me where I foolishly die early on to a big spider. This is my first run, I've never really routed Doom2 before, so it should be easy to beat.
https://files.catbox.moe/e4uoz8.lmp

Winner of the previous challenge last thread (didn't beat my time, but wins by default): >>12305808

I figure this is perhaps the only wad people are familiar enough with they can get reasonably far in a single segment without practice. If people like this idea maybe we can try with the other iwads.
>>
>>12311260
No no no, I've got a better challenge. You play the game of your choice on the hardest difficulty, and every time you take damage, you punch yourself in the balls. If you're not sterile by the end of the game, you win.

If there are that many monsters you are probably meant to make them kill each other. Monster infighting is less efficient than the player's attacks, but it scales extremely well, to the point of being "embarrassingly parallel".

Oh rest assured, anon. I've fought in enough arenas by now that I understand the value of making monsters infight. It's a feature I appreciate in user maps, utilized a lot more than it was in the base games. But if they use a ton of the same monster (assuming it's not zombies) the infighting breaks down a lot.

Right now I'm burning out on another wad because every goddamn room is a mega fucking ambush with unreasonable shit like 50 archies surrounded by a ring of chaingunners.

>>

Probably some more arbitrary code execution shit, older versions of GZDoom had that problem.
>>
>>12311639
If you don't upgrade it makes a bunch of hypersensitive snowflake trannies feel insecure and invalidated, gives them panic attacks, and makes them cry.
>>
>>12311643
I guess that makes sense, but I don't exactly go rushing out to grab whatever GzD mod I can find to run on a whim, certainly not stuff which others haven't already been playing, so I don't see myself at any particular risk.

>>12311649
Give it a rest, you annoying faggot.
>>
>>12311660
I don't think anyone's actually had any sort of misfortune happen to them during the period of time when these exploits are discovered, but it's one of those things where the team jumps on that shit immediately to fix it because it's a bad look.

I mean fuck if I released a mod that had a 0 tic loop in it that crashed the game or some shit like that I'd update it immediately and tell people to download it posthaste.
>>
>>12311670
>I don't think anyone's actually had any sort of misfortune happen to them
I was mid-asking about this. Hard to imagine anyone actually running out to use GZDoom as an attack vector.
That's good, at least.
>>
>>12311643
Since ZScript has been added there's been at least three of those.
>>12311683
I know at least one of them allowed just replacing any file on your hard drive with demo files, pretty comprehensive way to fuck people's shit up.
>>
>>12311660
It's suspicious. They use fearmongering tactics to scare you into upgrading in haste, thus sneaking unwanted features past you until it's too late. You can't possibly object to this update, it fixes a remote code exploitation vulnerability! Except that is only triggerable in 0.001% of circumstances, but then you run the game and find Doomguy wears a dress and has pronouns.
>>
>>12311719
Geez. Kinda makes me worry about when other ports will start wanting their own little versions of ZScript.

Occam's Razor, my demented friend, suggests they're touting the security update part as trying to make UzD look more legitimate and developed than GzD (whether it substantially is or not). Making themselves look more competent than Graf is most likely their Number 1 priority right now.

I imagine that if they're gonna do any troonery shit, they're gonna be too lazy to make an entire Troonguy spriteset (player sprites, HUDface, weapons, and all, that shit is a lot of work), and rather just add it as one of the gender options and call it a day. Given the wide range of 'subjectivity' you can see with nupronoun bullshit, they might allow for the player to just add custom genders and pronouns, so someone can correctly identify as Imp/Impself.

If ZScript can identify a player's selected gender and then execute things based on that, this could potentially be used for all kinds of hilarious shenanigans, if you were so inclined.
>>
>>12311921

I wouldn’t mind if its spread was just slightly more narrow. You’ve REALLY got to be in someone’s grill to have all those pellets hit. I guess the tradeoff is having more consistently staggered enemies through the mod’s Copper origins, and it does work well when you’re getting rushed by a swarm of those melee zombiethings.

Shooting it really reminded me of a more spammy Flak Cannon, which isn't so bad but yeah, a tighter pattern with the pellets instead of a sprinkler system would have been nice at the sacrifice of some volume in favor of stopping power. But it's okay. I can kill the weird mouth monolith things with it if I have good conditions but could use a tweak.

Is there a "Doom 3 for Doom 2"? That might be more of a fair comparison. D64 is basically classic Doom gameplay so it makes sense that D64D2 translates so well. You might even be able to argue it's an objective improvement since it puts the missing monsters back in.
Quakulf tried a test map for KexQ2 using extracted Q4 textures. It translated surprisingly well. I also prefer Q2's gameplay much more than Q4's so it might be a similar but much more objective improvement in the gameplay department.

It's weird because they redid all the CG cutscenes from scratch, so you'd think they would've redone the box art render too.
>>
>>12312890
if they re-rendered everything, then they did an impressively shit job.
>>
>>12313040
None of those CG cutscenes have people in them. Anyone with enough technical inclination can wrangle Blender to model basic architecture or blocky spaceships and figure out how to move them around with keyframes. Most of that is pretty intuitive, and there's a gorillion tutorials out there.
But most intuitiveness goes out the window when you have to model, rig, and animate characters like those stormtroopers on the cover. That will take the average person MUCH longer than even the biggest, most greebly space ship.
Nightdive is about as cheap as non-indie developers get (only beaten by Aspyr) so they probably found a really cheap 2D artist to definitely not AI upscale the still frames, and got whoever on their team who fucks around in Blender occasionally to do the 3D stuff - which you'll notice has much less polish in animation compared to the originals despite the higher resolution.

Smart blur/oilify, cleaned up, edge detect or cartoon filter and probably cleaned a little more. Kinda lazy, but not AI.

And it's not a 3D render, which is what the cover is. The 3D parts are all re-rendered. Unless you think they were using AI for the videos (they weren't) they have no reason not to just re-render the cover. Only thing that looks weird about the cover art to me is a sharpening filter.

I took a break from fucking around with the plasma+BFG combo thing (Current plan is shoot it for a bit, the gun shoots slower and has stronger projectiles that force flinch, then builds up to firing BFG tracer blasts until you let go of fire or run out of cells)

Implementing the backup attacks for the SMG here: You run out of normal ammo and you'll fire projectile flechettes that deal less damage. The reload won't drop magazines for this later on.

I'm fucking around with a little experiment to condense Doom's arsenal of 8 guns down into 4. So pistol + chaingun, shotgun + SSG, and plasma + BFG. Rocket launcher is by itself cus it's cool like that. No altfire for the guns, altfire is dedicated to a sword button because I don't like the vanilla fist.

Guns all operate with a single button, but they do different shit if you either press the button or hold it. Like for the rocket launcher here: A single press fires off a barrage of three rockets, and holding it does a more traditional steady rocket launcher attack. Because I don't want to make people manually click each time to shoot a rocket, that sucks.

The real, non-pretending-to-be-retarded reply, is simply that no-one bothers to reply to the newspost, and the only job of the threadmaker is to update the new newspost with the replies to the current one.
In the past some obsessively tryhard former threadmakers have chosen to take on actual newshounding as part of their job, but I don't think the current jobholders see it that way, nor do I think it's reasonable to expect it. Lulls are bound to happen, but truly it's everyone's responsibility to contribute to it if they know of a very recent release or significant news regarding retro shooters, and it's not in the newspost or its replies.

Ideally, reply with a post bearing the [dd-mm] bracket, a link (for forum links, you can usually cut away the rubric and just leave the thread ID), and then a very short descriptor of it.
Even if you do it without the ready formatting, it's still a good contribution.

>Sigil 2: Clears Hell yet again; NOW he has to save Earth.
>MAP01-11: Evacuates Earth and awaits death; is told where the demons came from and has to close it.
>MAP12-20: Gets to the entryway to Hell; can't close it from Earth and has to go back to Hell to close it.
>MAP30: Kills the Icon of Sin; has to clean up Earth.
>TNT: Is now the commander of Earth's militaries; demons show up in a spaceship while on a walk and has to stop them all over again.
>Plutonia: Tries to go on vacation; Hell invades various jungle facilities, steals a quantum accelerator, and now he has to kill Icon of Sin #3.
>64: Tries to retire; gets reactivated to kill the Mother Demon after Hell invades again.
>Lost Levels: At this point he "embraces the suck" and stays in Hell; gets kicked back out by the Mother Demon's sister and has to go BACK to Hell.
>Pre-2016: Gets the crucible, becomes the Doom Slayer, and slays a Titan; gets a temple dropped on his head to contain him.
>2016: Wakes up in the future, suits up, kills his first Spider Mastermind in centuries, and stops Hell again; Samuel Hayden steals his sword and teleports him to fuck-knows-where.

>Doom scene dying
If Doom scene is dying, no modding scene has ever been alive. Actually Doom scene has never as active as it has been this decade. In last week alone we have already received actual final-ish release of Extermination Day, and new russian high quality megawad No Time 2 Freeze. This year should see the releases of TNT Exolution, Delirium, Kuiper, Corruption 2, Avactor 2, JENES15, Happy Time Circus 3 and Dissension 2. It's just that most mapping/modding groups exist in Discord rather than forums or image boards.

But yea /vr/ suffered slightly after 4chan hacking, because lot of tourists came here due lack of moderation, and it drove some people out that actually contributed on our projects. When we eventually start new Doom project, more sane people will come here. Don't worry.

What, the brutal doom starter pack? Where was this reported on?

Just found out that psyren (Crimson Canyon, Rylayeh, Elegant Agony and Blood TC guy) released a 32 map megawad on 2022 called PSYKOPLEX22. Nice old schoolish maps. Somehow I completely missed this one.

I love TNT, but I also understand this because there's a lot to NOT love about TNT.

It's a very early collab megawad for Doom 2, and not every contributor was so talented, so it ends up as this rough mixed bag. There's some good chocolates and gummy candies in there, but the candy corn obviously expired many years ago, and that apple has a razor in it.
There's maps that I love in TNT, and maps which I hate, and there's also a lot of subjectivity there, because some people love O'Briens giant maps, but most people don't.

TNT Revilution is a MUCH stronger, smoother, and more even product, but it also has a pretty different feel, it lacks a lot of the original's grit (in bad and good ways, mind).
Plutonia is popularly considered the better half of the original Final Doom for its gameplay and map design, but something I always wanted to do was to actually combine the best qualities of Plutonia and Evilution.

I like continuous play. It adds an element of strategy where you're trying to finish the map with as much ammo, health and armor as possible.
>>
>>12315019
I used to do that but found I was always overpowered and drowning in stuff I couldn't pick up after two or three maps.
>>
>>12315032
>overpowered
Just play harder wads bro.
>>
>>12315036
Do you have any recommendations? Harder wads especially seem designed for demo recorders for whom pistol start is required. If I bring a load of weapons and inventory onto a map whose first room gifts me a shotgun and a pile of shells, I immediately feel I am playing it wrong. Other than Doom and Doom2 what wads were made for continuous play?
>>
>>12315019
I like the Dakka format of it where you don't get to take all of the ammo to the next map.
>>
>>12315046
Yes, while most wads are balanced for pistol start, that doesn't mean the harder ones won't still be hard as fucking balls played continuously.
What is the hardest wad you have beaten?
>>
>>12315065
I don't know how to answer that, it depends what you mean by "beaten". Plus it's been decades since I played continous with savegames so I can't remember. We should probably end this conversation, I can already sense you are just going to get annoyed with me.
>>
>>12315083
>I don't know how to answer that

>>
>>12315059

The what?
>>
>>12315091
Autistic, but I'm sure you'll say that's the same thing. Nevertheless, different people mean different things by "beaten". I need to know your definition before I can answer your question, to avoid stupid, worthless, timewasting misunderstandings that always happen when I have to discuss matters with neurotypicals.
>>12315092
Oh, that's easy, Plutonia. Maybe MM2 except for one map, I've never quite managed to get 3x100% on map19 because the computer map is so awkwardly placed in a timed crusher trap, and it's so painful to play through I just don't find it fun to retry.
>>
>>12315127
>Plutonia
OK, yeah.
It's likely that you'd feel that something like Ancient Aliens or Valiant was challenging enough to be fun even with continuous play, let alone something like Sunlust, which you would likely find ball-bustingly difficult, even with continuous play.
And Sunlust isn't even that hard compared to a lot of the shit being released these days.
https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/107015-wad-progression-for-skill-improvement/ this is a good git gud progression.
>>
>>12315127
>>12315131
And if you decide to follow that progression and try Scythe first, like, I absolutely fucking guarantee you that you will find Fire and Ice ball-bustingly hard even if you start it with 200/200, all weapons and full ammo. You will still likely use every cell available on the map.
>>
>>12315131
Ok thanks for your advice.
I already know Sunlust, I've done all the maps pistol start but on lower skill levels (for three I needed ITYTD, embarrassingly)
So I'll try doing that continuous with saves.
>>12315136
Ah yes I'm familiar with Scythe. I've pistol started the first two episodes on UV and the third on HNTR. The last map is indeed a buster even on HNTR where you drown in invulnerabilities. It's still easy to die suddenly even when you think you're safe.
>>
>>12315046
>Harder wads especially seem designed for demo recorders for whom pistol start is required
>If I bring a load of weapons and inventory onto a map whose first room gifts me a shotgun and a pile of shells, I immediately feel I am playing it wrong
>I immediately feel I am playing it wrong
I think more map makers at least give some consideration to continuous play than you think.
You're only "playing it wrong" if the map maker specifically made an exit a death exit and you're somehow bypassing that to keep all your shit for the next map.
If the map maker did not choose to make the map have a death exit, then taking all of your shit into the next map is, by rule, not "playing it wrong," as it is a possibility which was fully intended by the mapper.
An example of a wad where continuous play was clearly accounted for: Eviternity 2.
The Perforator is incredibly powerful. As a result, it is usually only found in the final map of an episode. This is a clear sign that the designers of the wad, for the most part, do not want that weapon being used outside of the levels it is found in.
>>
>>12315131
I've been using this to look for set to ween myself into playing harder things:
https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/124160-wadmap-difficulty-scaling/

Wait, I'm retarded. I was confusing Eviternity 2's Perforator with Hardfest 2's infinite rocket launcher, which is usually only found in the last map of an episode.
The Perforator is typically only found in secret maps, making it a significant reward for continuous players who choose to play the secret maps.
Also, D2ALL is a thing that I'm sure many mapmakers at least give some consideration to.
>>
>>12315118
Dakka. It's a gameplay mod and the default setting resets all of your ammo to a certain amount. It's pretty big brained.
>>
>>12315204
I never liked pistol starting but absolutely fell in love with Dakka starting, and wish it had a standalone mod that could be put on anything. Its the perfect middleground to stop hoarding without resetting progression entirely between maps.
>>
>>12315224
>and wish it had a standalone mod that could be put on anything.
Best you could do is a general one that you could change to fit to mods since not everything classifies ammo as ammo.
>>
>>12315224
I like hoarding during continuous, though.
It makes the whole episode (or wad if the wad doesn't have episodes) feel like one big survival test.
>>
>>12315229
Yeah thats the issue I ran into trying to make one. After seeing how mods like gunbonsai run into problems regarding ammo classification and how it gets incorporated into stuff like reload and inventory systems, I don't know if even zscript could make a really universal system. I'm certainly too fucking stupid to do it myself.
>>
>>12315239
I like hording too, until I realize I'm not using good shit as much as I should, which is why I stated messing with pistol starting in the first place. Going into levels with max plasma ammo is like going into final bosses in an RPG with max healing items, while games like Heretic would only let you carry over 1 of each item to encourage you to use them more. That type of middleground is great for breaking those habits.
>>
>>12315251
Yeah but on the plus side I've been getting better at berserk fisting revenants and hell nobles lately due to hoarding.
>>
>>12315253
The best way to get better at tysoning is to be forced to, especially when a map is designed around it. Why do you need the ammo if you never have to use it? It's just a number on your hud at that point.

It's like one step removed from being a standalone game, makes a lot of changes and not much of the original is left over, if the dev maybe had a whole studio or financing it probably could have been a matter of just licensing the quake engine source code itself and making a full unique game, but instead it's just built on top of quake itself as just a heavy duty mod

Interestingly, most all commercial products that used quake 1's engine were just mods/conversions that required quake itself, only Hexen 2 was a unique game with its own unique edits to the quake engine code, Quake 2 was the one that got proper unique games build on its code, like Doom before it

How come no-one ever made one of these for Half-Life, or even just a themed map? Closest thing I've ever seen was an old CS 1.6 map based on Hoth, complete with laser turrets and an AT-ST. As for Quake, there was that Overdose mod that replaced enforcers with Boba Fett.

Exactly. Not only did Valve forget to remove t0a0b, they left a trigger_changelevel that connects it to the rest of Hazard Course, so if you try to backtrack into the swimming section you'll end up in t0a0b instead of t0a0b2.
If you're wondering, t0a0b = t0a0b1 (crate pushing, crowbar, flashlight) + t0ab02 (target range, swimming section).

Unfortunately no, they have no behaviors other than staring at the player, and don't even have a proper hitbox. Also they only exist in Hazard Course as decorations.

i just completed doom on the zdoom source-port, it was fucking awesome.
it's a damn shame that i've already knew how to beat the spider-demon, i probably would've enjoyed the boss more if i did a blind play-through. oh well, i don't really care about spoilers anymore.

You mean shoot at it till it dies?

yeah. i did it with the bfg.

The Spidermind is a pushover of a boss, he's not hard even if you pistolstart and just use the rockets and plasma in the level.
Cyberdemon isn't exactly tough in his first appearance either, but he ends up being a versatile enemy when used right, which he is in a few Doom 2 and Final Doom maps, he's like a good heavy support or miniboss.

Spidermind does not have that, because his hitbox is gigantic so he doesn't fucking fit unless you provide a LOT of space for him in the level, and also his Super Chaingun makes him start infighting with other monsters really easily (who can then hit him really easily because his massive hitbox).
In my opinion, Spidermind should probably have had more health, moved faster, a slightly smaller hitbox, and only be able to infight with Cyberdemons and maybe Archies.
>>
The difficulty of making practical use out of the Spidermind means that when you find a level someone made where the Spidermind is actually used in a good way that's challenging (but also not annoying), that's a sign that the author probably really knows what the fuck he's doing.
>>
Genuine question and it may sound weird when I ask it but I definitely don't mean it in a condescending or negative way whatsoever but in terms of game design, how do people actually die to the Cyberdemon? He's just this giant lug and has literally 1 attack, shoot 3 rockets rhythmically. Rinse and repeat while ambling around. And yet people die to him. Happens to me happens to everyone and if you try to claim it doesn't happen to you, surely you're lying. Such a simple design with 1 attack and nothing else and yet so dangerous. Is it a psychological thing? The design of this enemy fascinates me so.

A Cyberdemon by himself is usually easy pickings.
When he has an entourage of other demons fucking with you, that's when it becomes a problem.
>>
>>12317496
when he's used as a rocket turret from a relative distance while you only have a regular shotgun and limited ammo while there's demons blocking your way on some thin platforms

I think i'm thinking of that one ultimate doom level
>>
>>12317496
Death is fairly avoidable, but it's gonna depend on how he's used.
In confined spaces, he's oppressive as hell, and Doom 64's secret bonus level uses him in a REALLY mean way, having him constantly teleport around a kind of small map.

A common one is to put him in the distance, to make him operate as a form of artillery support for the other demons. He's not constantly oppressive there, but you need to be mindful of him regularly sending rockets towards you, so keep throwing glances his way. Combine with other monsters around and this can get very hectic, but since he hits so fucking hard, he can also be WAY helpful in eliminating other monsters for you (this is why he's a staple in slaughter maps, he's guaranteed to kill lots of other enemies if given the chance).

Broadly, I'd say that iD didn't have all of the most creative ideas for how to use all their monsters, but a lot of them have shitloads of potential which wasn't really realized in the base game.

For me it's Battlefront II (2005).

If the Battlefronts played like Outcast/Academy they would be perfect. Instead they're clunky jankfests that get a free pass from the spectacle of big battles.

Doom trick you probably already know.

Don't waste any time when you're about to grab that new weapon you see-- switch to another weapon, putting your hands down in the process, and then grab that new weapon before your hands come up and you'll be equipped with it nearly immediately. Me so smart, me found that out on my own, Now then, let's see when people figured this out annnnnd... back in October 1994.

How did Strife compare to other RPGs at the time strictly from the perspective of an RPG? I only want to hear your opinion if you fully played and beat the games you're about to bring up.

But mayhaps a normie sees my post and is playing the KEX port, the most friendly port there is, it's a good tip.

>strictly from the perspective of an RPG?
Extremely poorly, since it's an FPS with a bit of RPG dressing rather than an actual RPG.

So how did strife compare to other FPS games(and first person slashers) of the time?
>>
>>12317946
It was still very much a "Doom feeling" game while Duke3D was big and Quake would come out a few months later, and that's in spite of Descent already getting some traction (though some here would argue it's not an FPS). The level progression and NPC conversations were cool, though, and it was still timeless Doom-inspired combat.
>>
>>12317808
Not very much of an RPG, but I still like it. It has a lot of character.

Can confirm. Haven't done any mapping since 512 lines, but that was because I contributed to Ad Mortem, 400 min and 512 lines and kind of lost my mojo. I am not creative enough to just pump out maps like a 40oz.

Oh yes this is the weapon quickswitch trick. I was only ever dimly aware of it and never used it deliberately in single player. I don't recall it being discussed much by speedrunners. It's much more of an important thing in deathmatch, I heard it mentioned much more during the brief time I got into multiplayer.
Well done for figuring it out for yourself. I was never any good at that sort of thing. I only know the tricks that others have told me. I think the only thing I worked out by myself before reading about it elsewhere was chaingun tapping, you know the thing where you turn it into a sniper rifle by tapping the fire button instead of holding it down because the first two shots are accurate.
