i always wondered how actually canon everything they do and face in the saga is. they defeat robots, bizarre machinery, aliens and deities... with just pistols? how does all that actually go down story-wise?

it could make sense in metal slug 1, where the story was a simple parody of sorts of world war. then came the sequels with science fiction shit

I didn't play 2/X till after 3, so first time playing 3 I assumed the mutants and zombies were the series exploring bioweapons instead of mechanical, right up until i got to the stage 2 boss. I also just always assumed the stuff in 5 was more advanced alien tech that almost seems like occultic magic, especially since the PS2 game did something similar with its plot involving an anchient civilization/alien origins thing.
