The movie released in Japan on the same day as ZOE1, the anime series started a month later, and the GBA game released right when the anime ended. ZOE2 is the only true sequel in the series a few years later.

He's just a kid, the game even treats him as having gotten lucky to have fallen into what is basically a super overpowered mecha compared to what he fights. And even with that he basically just got lucky when fighting the boss of the game... and when up against an actual soldier with a mech of similar ability could not even scratch him and you are forced to just run away.

He's replaced by an actual adult veteran in the second game anyway and ends up as a child soldier that's just one of the many NPCs assisting you like >>12312589 said.
