I've never played the 3D0, but I really like what they did with it in the sense of them licensing the hardware to various manufacturers. That's a very clever way to save money. What are your favorite titles on this system? I'd love to try it out sometime since I've heard a lot of good things about it and a lot of bad things as well.

It's not too amazing in terms of US releases but I do like the headphone jack on the controller. The JP homebrew scene is massive but isn't worth checking out unless you can into moonrune. Anyone have any successful emulation setups?

Despite being the most powerful of the consoles prior to the PS1 and Saturn, I find the 3DO to be the least interesting of the 5th gen false start. The Jaguar, CD-i, and Amiga CD32 aren't great systems, but they all have games on them I find interesting and enjoyable. The 3DO has Road Rash and Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, and that's about it, unless you want to delve into the FMV stuff.
Honestly, the most compelling games on it for me are the compressed CD quality video porn.

Road Rash was awesome but PC got a much better 60 fps with netplay port
However Need For Speed and Novastorm still had the best versions on 3DO

Need for Speed is pretty cool on 3D0

My autism out of the way, yeah, it's pretty cool that it has the very first NFS release

This and the Jaguar were released really close in approximation to each other. But the 3DO was a much bigger success than the ill fated Jaguar overall. I would call it interesting in the sense that it did lay the groundwork for the later Saturn and PS1. Both those systems used the 3DO as a template in many ways. The 3DO really focused on that early 90's 'multimedia' aesthetic with FMV and b-tier actors. The Sega CD was doing the same thing, around the time period too. It also gave EA a head start on 5th gen consoles, as they did make an attempt to support the machine. But by the time the Saturn and PS1 were out, they really shifted focus to those systems. Trip Hawkins made claims that he was there at E3 1995 during the Playstation '$299' reveal, and he said it was basically over for the 3DO when Sony announced the price. 3DO gave it a shot, and used an interesting manufacturing method of licencing the hardware out to other hardware vendors like Panasonic, Goldstar, Sanyo and even Creative Labs. The system did have an interesting life in Japan. I think after E3 1995, it was clear that Sony was going to be the winner of 5th gen consoles.

Were game devs too greedy? They should have made the games cheaper considering what they were saving in licensing fees. There’s a shitty puzzle game called flopon-kun/trip’d with less content than Game Boy Tetris and it cost twice as much. Though that might have just been Kenji Eno being a schizo retard as usual.

4DO is supposed to be a good 3DO emulator that can get you past the crippling slowdown some of the 3d games had, so you can try some neat oddities like the proto survival horror Dr. Hauser (pretty rough on real hardware I'll tell you).

Other games that are kind of fun and interesting are Psychic Detective (fmv schlock), Immercenary (ultra janky but very cool and unique), and Burning Soldier (one of the best of the "fmv rail shooters" popular at the time).
>>
Immercenary is an 8/10 game unironically

Damn, I just now realized Cruelty Squad is inspired by Immercenary!

>JP homebrew scene is massive
Really? Has anyone tried releasing a full fledged finished project, or is it just proof of concept/"look at what i made it do" type stuff?
>>
>>12315903
You really like what they did to make it destined to fail? Cool.
>>
>>12317009
There's a lot of demos as is the case with the homebrew scene, but there are a surprising number of unique games.

Consoles were sold at a profit before the PS1, the licensing was a good idea before sony fucked it up.

>Consoles were sold at a profit before the PS1
lol. no. Why do downs babies insist on bullshitting about how things were long before they were born?
>>
>>12318461
both the gigaleak and sega leaks proved it. the genesis and the snes were both sold at a profit
>>
>>12315903
I did play Need For Speed on pc and I felt like it was a step above stuff like Doom and better than 16 bit races but still fake in a way. As soon as I saw Ridge Racer those pseudo 3d games like NFS and Road Rash seemed almost as outdated as 16 bit racers but actually I considered 16 bit 2D to be much better than early 3D stuff like on 3do.
>>
>>12318530
Both were also sold at a loss, as were many others. Cope harder little zoomie.
